【4K】神奈川・大和 戦時を生きた台湾少年工たちの足跡|Japan Walking Tour
Visiting the memorial monument for Taiwanese wartime young workers Current location: Yamato City, Kanagawa Prefecture We have just left Izuminomori in Yamato City. This time, we will visit the memorial monument for Taiwanese young laborers. Your subscription is the beginning of a journey. Let’s go to a new view. This is Zentokuji Temple. I think they’ve paved the road with too much asphalt. It’s probably easier to maintain though. Although the flowers have withered, this is a memorial for Taiwanese boys who died in the war. It was built in 1963 by the boys’ boss using his own money. Approximately 8,000 boys mobilized from Taiwan worked at the Takasa Naval Arsenal in nearby Sagaminono. They would be around middle or high school age today. They had a very hard time with hard labor. Apparently there was a dormitory for Taiwanese young factory workers right around this temple. After the war, some of them turned violent and behaved as Sankokujin, but most of the stories written about them are just heroic tales. Or taking revenge on a Japanese boss who bullied you at the factory. Well, that’s OK. Go ahead and do it. They say they gathered the best students through selection, but the selection process must have been a pretty lax test. It seems that initially only 200 Japanese children showed up, so they decided to turn their attention to Taiwanese people. It’s difficult to turn this into an uplifting story. I can understand the feelings of those who sought revenge after the war. If you think about it today, it’s probably something similar to foreign technical trainees. I wonder if there was a boarding school around here at that time. We arrived at Kumano Shrine (Kamikusayanagi). I wonder if Taiwanese boys also came here to pray at that time. There is a black cat The black cat is following me Run away Is it 2600 AD? In the Gregorian calendar, that would be 1940. Apparently there were significant celebrations held throughout Japan to mark the anniversary of 2600 AD, and this was perhaps part of those. A sign prohibiting barbecues. Typical of Yamato City. Hikiji River. We just passed the source. We arrived at Taiwan Pavilion. It was built in 1993 with funding from Taiwan’s junior workers at the time. At that time, it was his first visit to Japan, which he calls his second home, in 50 years. I feel bad for him for spending the best years of his life doing hard labor in Japan during wartime. There is a Chinese poem written on it. I will introduce the translation. If you climb up to a hill and look at the eastern sky, there is nothing blocking your view. You can greet the sunrise early Sing loudly and without hesitation, your heart will be lifted Sitting in the pavilion, watching the white clouds flow by Looking at the sturdy pine trees that have survived I still have the courage and determination to not give up. I wonder if this poem expresses the scenery and thoughts of the Taiwanese young workers at that time. He was 18 years old in 1945, and is now close to 100 years old. There are probably very few people alive today. I guess the forest around here was a nostalgic playground for them. They built it in a place that holds memories for them. That’s all for today. Thank you for watching. Your subscription will help me to take on the next journey. Likes will also help support me.
