[ Tasmania Farmstay | Rathmore Central Highlands] We’ve discovered the best farm stay in Tasmania In this Tasmania travel vlog We’re staying at Rathmore A heritage listed sheep farm dating back nearly 200 years We’ll be treated to incredible gourmet meals Plus a bucket list moment Spotting a platypus in the wild We’ll also explore nearby gems Like Mount Field National Park With its waterfalls and towering trees Food spots you must try out And the riverside town of New Norfolk Famous for its antiques and foodie scene After exploring the charming towns and stunning landscapes of the central highlands We finally arrived at Rathmore Cally and Richard welcomed us in true Tasmanian style With canapes, fresh oysters and sparkling wine These are fresh oysters from Bruny Island Dinner that evening was nothing short of spectacular A rack of lamb was prepared by our hosts And was served with roasted carrots, asparagus and a creamy cauliflower gratin So this lamb looks so succulent Really nice and pink and tender The flavours were incredible Enhanced by the unique native spice of pepperberry That is just so juicy, so tender, so flavourful Even the gratin was a standout Rich and smooth and topped with Coal River cheese And that cheese just gives it a nice bit of saltiness Paired with local Tasmanian wine and enjoyed beneath a chandelier The whole experience felt wonderfully decadent To have a candle lit dinner in this beautiful dining hall I just feel so fancy And just when we thought it couldn’t get better, dessert arrived A flaming Bombe Alaska complete with a lavender ice cream centre I just love the spectacle of Bombe Alaska It is my favourite dessert Oh my goodness, that is fantastic It was the perfect finale to an unforgettable evening at Rathmore A true Tasmanian paddock to plate experience [Music] Rathmore House is a heritage listed homestead that was built in 1828 by convict labour And this home was built by hand using sandstone that was extracted on site It’s one of possibly the only homesteads of its kind in Tasmania Where you can actually stay in the original homestead [Music] At Rathmore, you’ve got the option of three different buildings to stay at You can stay either at Rathmore House Which is an elegant heritage experience Or for a more rustic chic experience Try Rathmore Cottage or Rathmore Shearers’ Quarters [Music] One thing I’m really excited about, about Rathmore Is that there are platypus that live on the grounds here I think there’s about five of them in the pond behind me So, let’s go and try and find some I’ve never rowed a boat before I’m um… I’m not sure how good I am at this This is a bit… bit unco at the moment, but… Oh, I think… I think Together, together I think I’m getting it Okay, well this is a bit… bit of an experience Argh! I feel like I’m flailing Okay, we’re going in hunt of the elusive platypus Now, I have never seen a platypus in the wild before in my life I’m really excited about this It’s only like last year or the year before that I saw my first echinda in the wild So, you know, some Australian animals, even like locals, just never see them So, I really hope we find one Not that easy, is it? [Music] There it is! Just see the back of it Can you see him? Behind you Oh my goodness It’s right in front of me I can see its bill It’s a platypus! Bubbles coming up Wow Wow Oh my goodness It’s a platypus! [Music] Oh, it’s looking right at me [Music] Very exciting! Oh there, it’s just behind you Hello [Music] Well, that was definitely one thing to tick off the bucket list Never seen a platypus in the wild before And that was so cool It felt like he came up to us and he was quite curious And he’d pop up every minute or so That was so awesome It’s such a unique animal [Music] Our next Rathmore experience was a personal farm tour with Cally Starting with one of the real stars of the property Mister the Sheep Now, Mister may be a sheep, but he acted more like a friendly dog Everywhere that Cally went, Mister was sure to go We also got to meet the resident chickens And it was time to give them a feed And let them out of their pen for the day Next stop was the historic woolshed Built in 1828 Today, it doubles as a function centre Hosting everything from school excursions to weddings Even Cally’s own daughter tied the knot here Inside, she showed us some fascinating historical instruments Including an old wool press, shears And even a butter churn Giving us a glimpse into the farm’s working past We also had a tour of Rathmore Cottage A rustic-chic, self-contained accommodation option that’s perfect for families To round off the tour We ventured up the paddock to meet Hercules The farm’s friendly bull He was a gentle giant Who clearly enjoyed the attention and the bread we fed him Oh, it’s got like sandpaper… Tongue, yes, yes [Music] Is it not the longest tongue? Yeah He’s really big Yeah, people can never quite believe when they get up to the fence to him Yeah [Music] Behind us is our accommodation at Rathmore So it’s known as the Rathmore Shearers’ Quarters And we’re going to take you inside to have a look Let’s do it So firstly, just outside you’ve got ample parking Just look at this amazing view Oh, it’s so great to wake up to in the morning Yeah, it’s wonderful And at night there are just so many stars I’ve never seen that many stars in my life That’s right You can see the whole Milky Way It’s really amazing So come on, let’s go inside So the first room here is called the mess room The mess hall So it’s a communal living area So there’s a fireplace here And then you’ve got a fully equipped kitchen with everything you need So you’ve got an induction stove top There’s even an electric stove top as well if you don’t like induction Microwave, toaster, kettle, pots and pans And you’ve got a fully stocked fridge as well With everything you need for breakfast And what I really like about it is that they provide a lot of really local ingredients So, we’ve got Tamar Valley yogurt Ashgrove Milk Got Bream Creek dairy black ash brie I’m looking forward to getting into that Yeah And Richard has made his own jams So I had some cherry jam this morning As well as some fig jam That was amazing There’s also plum jam, marmalade And some stewed fruits there Yeah, really, really tasty And they’ve also provided us with some extra little goodies from the Rathmore kitchen So some little shortbread bikkies Oh hazelnuts And oh, some more… more biscuits Yum Let’s take you through to the bedroom now Or this is our bedroom I believe this is the platypus queen room So, come on in It’s a very comfortable bed What I really like about the bed is that there’s an electric blanket So, it’s just perfect for winter You’re toasty straight away the moment you get in And you’ve got different electric blankets for each side So you can temperature control as well Jay asked me to turn on the electric blankets last night I did I didn’t realise there were two sides So, one side was a bit colder than the other Needless to say, Jay got the warm side And they’ve also got some really nice fluffy bathrobes for us Which is handy after you have a shower Let’s take you through to the washroom So, here it is It’s really spacious You got a big shower and a bath And what also comes with the bath are Epsom salts So, this is really nice at the end of a long day Get in the bath, relax and relax those muscles with some Epsom salts And what’s also great about this bathroom area is the laundry You’ve got a washing machine as well as dryer I always give bonus marks for any accommodation that has these features It’s just so handy when you’re on the road Especially for quite a long time So, if you’re part of a large group or family You might want to book out the whole Shearers’ Quarters So we’ll take you through and have a look at the some of the other rooms Come through here So this is the original Shearers’ Quarters That the shearers used to stay at in the month-long process of shearing the sheep When the owner Cally arrived here 10 years ago She found the shears’ quarters in somewhat of a disarray So these quarters were all put together quite higgledy-piggledy Nothing matched And so Cally went about the painstaking process to revive these quarters And now they look amazing And they’ve also got ensuite each Which is really handy I like this one down here They all have names and little pictures as well So I’ll just take you through Another queen size bed So each of these rooms have an ensuite, which is really lovely And great vista out onto the… Rainfall shower head and additional shower head And outside the Shearers’ Quarters is a campfire So you can enjoy marshmallows over the beautiful dark skies of Tassie If you’d like to experience Rathmore Shearers’ Quarters or Rathmore House for yourself Click the links in our video description to book your stay After an amazing morning exploring the farm We decided to head out and discover more of the nearby central highlands With a trip to Mount Field National Park On the way, we stopped in at The Possum Shed for lunch [Music] The Possum Shed is a really cosy cafe on the way to Russell Falls in Mount Field National Park So they have homemade food, really nice comfort food like the nachos and lasagna They’ve also got a range of sandwiches, burgers and sweets I’m going to get tucked into this I’m going to try this lasagna first Oh, I just love a good lasagna And it comes with a salad as well So, this was $22 I like that it’s a really big hearty serving size And that mince is really rich with the tomato paste And there’s plenty of cheese there as well These nachos look really appetising as well So, there’s a tomato salsa, guacamole, sour cream And you can get it either vegetarian or with meat And we’ve got… gone with meat There you go It’s all in there And there’s plenty of cheese on it as well This is a really nice serving size This was $18 Plenty of sour cream The mince also has refried beans in it as well So, it’s another hearty meal Great on a cold winter’s day The cafe’s got a really cosy atmosphere I love these really comfy seats And the cafe is also situated along a river And there’s outdoor seating as well If you want to enjoy the outside ambience [Music] When visiting national parks in Tasmania You will need to purchase a park pass You can purchase a day pass for $47.70 Or longer-term passes that range from 2 months to 2 years [Music] If you want to get back to nature Tasmania has a wide variety of national parks to choose from We’re at Mount Field National Park Which is in the central highlands of Tasmania This national park has a lot of beautiful walks to choose from To suit all abilities and all durations The shortest walk is to Russell Falls That’s one of Tasmania’s 60 great short walks It’s only 25 minutes return on a flat paved surface And we’re currently at Horseshoe Falls If you feel a bit more adventurous There are moderate hikes There’s hard hikes There’s also multi-day hikes [Music] We’re at the Big Trees Walk now And the tree behind me is over 70 m tall [Music] You can get more than your mail at the Bothwell Post Office They have a range of tantalising cakes and biscuits to choose from As well as drinks and toasties We’ve got a blondie here And this is called a Glamington So, it’s a gluten-free Lamington So, this is made with almond milk and coconut milk I guess it’s gluten-free, dairyfree We couldn’t go without hot chocolate It’s winter is certainly season for hot chocolates in Tasmania So, I’m going to try this blondie first So there’s cream there and a bit of raspberry too So there’s white chocolate in it Oh, so that’s quite dense And then a a dark sugar As you’d expect, there’s a really nice sweet caramel taste to it And I like the chunks of white chocolate in there as well And now the Glamington So I’ll just open up Yeah, so it’s… so it’s a little bit dense So it’s… it’s got almond meal in it That is really good So, I guess in a typical lamington that’s quite spongy and airy This is a little bit more dense Oh, but it tastes great I really like it You’ve got dark chocolate in there as well on the outside and the coconut I think this is my favourite And to finish it off, I’ve got my hot chocolate Bonus marks for the marshmallows I love having marshmallows in my hot chocolate And this is just great for a winter day in Tassie In addition to sweets The Bothwell Post Office also has an assortment of homewares, local produce and gifts [Music] A 30-minute drive from Rathmore towards Hobart will bring you to the historic town of New Norfolk New Norfolk is a charming riverside town on the edge of the Derwent River So, it’s just outside of Hobart and it’s Tasmania’s fourth oldest town It’s known for its colonial architecture as well as really cool antique shops Right now, I’m at the Pulpit Rock lookout It gives a really great view overlooking the town [Music] New Norfolk is a must-visit destination in Tasmania for lovers of food In particular The Agrarian Kitchen Garden was named Gourmet Traveller best restaurant in Australia in 2024 [Music] Willow Court Antique Centre in New Norfolk has a treasure trove of items from a bygone era You can find literally everything here from large antique vehicles to intricate antique china After a full day exploring the central highlands We were excited to return for another Rathmore dining experience Tonight’s venue was the Old Stables A space that’s pure rustic chic With antique furniture complete with candelabra The atmosphere felt both romantic and timeless At Rathmore, you have a number of dining experiences to choose from So, there’s candle lit dinner in the homestead Which is what we did last night And tonight, we’re trying out Eweba Eats Which is in the stables So the food that Cally and Richard put on is just amazing So we highly recommend it This evening we’ve already started with canapes and sparkling The canapes were delicate bites of beetroo puree and prawns Paired perfectly with a glass of sparkling wine For the mains, we were treated to a rich and comforting lamb ragu The slowcooked lamb was melt in your mouth tender Coated in a luscious tomato-based sauce Infused with herbs And tossed through fresh pasta Every bite was hearty yet refined And it paired beautifully with a glass of Bream Creek pino My favourite Tasmanian pino so far And then came dessert A light coconut cake served with juicy blueberries And the unexpected twist of licorice ice cream Sweet, fragrant and just a little daring It was the perfect finale for another unforgettable meal at Rathmore [Music] We travelled through the Tasmania central highlands with Alice Car Rental We found the whole experience really seamless From the friendly service to the easy pickup just minutes from Hobart Airport So Jon, what did you think of our farm stay in Tasmania? Well, there’s nothing like getting back to nature And I really enjoyed our time here at Rathmore There’s hardly any places you’ll find in Australia where you can see platypuses up close and personal So, that was really a highlight for me as well as the food What did you think of the food? Oh my goodness, we have been so well fed here We’ve been wined and dined by Cally and Richard Their country home cooking is just amazing And they’re so inventive with their dishes as well I really loved the lavender ice cream The food for me has been some of the best we’ve had so far in Tasmania in total So, yeah, just amazing And so unrivaled hospitality here at Rathmore So, we hope you enjoyed our Tasmania travel vlog If you did, be sure to hit that like button and leave us a comment In our next Tasmania travel vlog, we’re headed to apple country So the Huon Valley Think cider, apple pie and a lot of really tasty food So, if you’re interested in that content Make sure you subscribe and hit that notification button And we’d like to give a big thanks to Rathmore and Alice Car Rental For partnering with us in this video and making it possible We are Bucket List Travellers See you next time [Music]
