[4K] Girona, Spain Walk 🇪🇸 Medieval City – Game of Thrones Location

Welcome, explorers! Today we’re in Girona, a historic city in Catalonia, Spain. Its old town, with medieval walls and winding streets, is among the best preserved in Spain. Several of these landmarks even became filming locations for the TV series Game of Thrones. These elegant stone arches frame a small square at the end of Cort Reial street. The Ascent of Saint Domènec is one of Girona’s most photogenic stairways. Its roots go back to the 13th century, when the Dominicans built a convent here. Flanked by Renaissance palaces and crowned by the baroque Church of Saint Martí, it feels like a stage set. Locals say it’s impossible to pass without stopping—whether for a photo or a terrace seat at Le Bistrot. The stairs have appeared on screen in Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (2006). But it was Game of Thrones that made them famous, turning the steps into a Braavosi marketplace. Fans will remember Arya Stark’s dramatic chase and her fall that sent baskets of oranges tumbling down the stairs. Throughout Girona you’ll find references to the “flies of Sant Narcís,” from old sculptures to modern graffiti. The legend dates back to 1285, when French troops invaded the city. As the story goes, swarms of flies burst from the tomb of Saint Narcís, attacking the soldiers and their horses. Terrified, the invaders fled, and the miraculous flies became a lasting symbol of Girona’s spirit. This is one of the most emblematic streets in Girona. In the 15th century, it was at the heart of the city’s Jewish quarter, known as El Call. The steep street later found a second life on screen, becoming a Game of Thrones filming location. Fans will remember Arya’s frantic chase by the Waif that unfolded along these very steps. The Cathedral of Saint Mary, looms above Girona, blending Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque styles. It holds the record for the widest Gothic nave in the world, almost 23 metres across. The grand Baroque staircase leading up to it is impossible to miss. In Game of Thrones, the cathedral steps became the Great Sept of Baelor. Where Jaime Lannister rides up and Margaery walks her walk of atonement. Pujada del Rei Martí climbs steeply between the Convent of the Capuchins and the Church of Sant Feliu. Once known as Carrer del Llop — or Street of the Wolf — for a carved lintel that shows a wolf devouring a choirboy. The street is named after King Martí l’Humà, whom locals believe was born in house number 1 of this very lane. Long ago, this was part of the Via Augusta and served as one of the main entrances into Girona from the north. We’ve arrived at Plaça dels Jurats, one of Girona’s medieval squares, edged by stone arcades and old walls. In Game of Thrones, this was the Braavos Theater — the spot where Arya witnesses a play that mocks the Lannisters. We arrive at Sant Pere de Galligants, a majestic Romanesque church and cloister. Built in the 12th century over earlier foundations, this site has witnessed nearly a thousand years of history. Notice the asymmetrical apses and that octagonal bell tower, which are unusual in Romanesque architecture. Just steps from Sant Pere de Galligants you can access Girona’s medieval walls, often overlooked by casual visitors. These fortifications date back to the Carolingian period, later expanded in the 14th and 15th centuries. Perched above the city, the Mirador de Santa Llúcia offers some of Girona’s most breathtaking and tranquil views. From here, you can see the Cathedral’s distinctive bell tower, the Monastery of Sant Pere de Galligants, and the winding streets of the Jewish Quarter This spot is especially magical at sunrise or sunset, when the city is bathed in golden light. It’s a peaceful place to pause, reflect, and take in Girona from a unique perspective. We’re now on Carrer de la Barca, a lively street connecting Girona’s historic center to the modern city. This bustling avenue is lined with shops, cafés, and local businesses, offering a taste of everyday life in Girona. As you walk, notice the mix of medieval buildings and modern shops, reflecting Girona’s rich history. Dating back to the 9th century, this basilica was the city’s main church before the construction of the Cathedral. The bell tower stands as one of Girona’s iconic structures, offering panoramic views of the city. Legend says that kissing the lion’s backside brings good luck — a favorite among locals and visitors alike. The Font de Sant Feliu is a charming medieval fountain tucked beside the basilica. We’re at Gómez Bridge, one of the city’s charming historic crossings over the Onyar River. The bridge connects the old town with the eastern riverside and offers lovely views of the colorful houses lining the water. This neoclassical square was built in the mid-19th century on the site of the former Convent of Saint Agustí. At its center stands the Monument to the Defenders of Girona, commemorating those who resisted the French sieges. Lined with elegant arcades, the square is home to cafés and restaurants, popular with locals and visitors alike. The Casas del Onyar line the river, creating one of Girona’s most iconic views. Though their origins go back centuries, most of the current buildings date from the 19th and 20th centuries. In the distance is the Eiffel Bridge, where our Girona walk began, spanning the Onyar River. The bridge was designed by Gustave Eiffel before he built the Eiffel Tower in Paris. We’ll wander Girona’s streets like a local, avoiding the busy old town spots, to feel the city’s everyday vibe and hidden corners. From here, I’ll let you soak in Girona’s ambience, and later we’ll visit a local market in the city’s largest park.
