🇮🇹 Stia 『鉄のアートフェスタ』小さな美しい村でのヨーロッパ鍛冶職人芸術祭 2025 The European Biennial of Blacksmithing Art in Stia
We arrived in Stia, an hour and a half’s drive from Florence toward Arezzo. This time, we decided to visit the biannual European Blacksmiths’ Arts Festival. Romena Castle, an ancient castle dating back over 1,000 years, can be visited for 5 euros. As we walked down the road, past the castle, we came across the pleasant, lush Casentino grasslands. The bells rang out, signaling midnight. Let’s head toward the church. San Pietro a Romena, built in the mid-12th century, is one of Casentino’s most interesting Romanesque buildings. Let’s go inside. The church is simple, but the light streaming in through the windows creates a sacred, mystical atmosphere. It seems we can access the basement from here. Let’s go down. Music began playing. The space was beautiful and mystical, combining art and music. We also made a wish on a candle. While many churches in Italy are dark and solemn, this one is bright, comfortable, and lovely. It’s lunchtime, and there’s a restaurant attached to the church. Let’s take a look at today’s menu. I wonder what to order… Let’s eat. I ordered the ricotta tortello. It’s filled with ricotta cheese and the Italian vegetable bieta. It was delicious! Thank you for the meal. I’d be happy if you subscribed and liked my channel. 🙏 We arrived in the town of Stia. Let’s check out today’s main event: the European Blacksmiths’ Art Festival! This is a major iron arts festival held every two years in Europe. It began in 1976 and this year marks its 26th anniversary. Exhibition spaces are scattered throughout the city. It’s a market filled with fascinating old tools and antiques. Each tool is like a work of art. An old iron iron. It uses charcoal inside. A brass bell for livestock. I wonder if it makes a nice sound. It has a high, beautiful tone. There are many interesting things. There are also various door handles. Further along the street are antique and artisan markets. Wow, what a nostalgic find! The gramophone even works. Edoardo found something. What’s this? An Acciarino (arma da fuoco) gunpowder-adding device, handmade by an artisan. It’s 250 euros! The Arno River, which flows through Florence, begins here in Stia. This area has long been a thriving wool mill, and this is the site of a former mill. Panno Casentino is famous for its high-quality, slightly pilled wool. Let’s enter the exhibition hall. Works by artists from around the world are on display. An antique Baule. A large wooden storage box. Crafted with intricate handiwork by artisans. Knock, knock! How big was the door? It feels heavy. And the various locks, each with a subtle difference in shape, are all crafted by ancient artisans. There are also works by Japanese artists. The intricacy is hard to believe they’re made of iron. We arrived at the main exhibition hall, the largest in size. Many unique pieces are on display. This is the townscape of Stia. It’s a small town, but you can see that everyone is putting on an event to revitalize it. Cascata di Stia, Stia Waterfall, Piazza Mazzini , where blacksmiths are giving demonstrations. It’s impressive to watch them hammer red-hot iron. The Italian style is to work while chatting harmoniously with the customers. To finish off the day, we have to have gelato! What should I order? All of the original homemade gelatos look delicious. The two flavors, fig and lemon ginger, give it a refreshing taste. Let’s eat!
