駅前に降り立つと、まばらな足音とともに、住宅街の静けさがすっと入り込んできた。神奈川県大和市。南林間から大和方面へ向けて歩くこの道には、派手な景色も観光名所もない。それでも、街道の先に佇む寺や、1日1本だけ運行されるバス停の標識に触れると、この土地に流れてきた時間の重みが、ふと足元に現れてくる。聞称寺に立つ親鸞像、西鶴寺の門前に広がる矢倉沢往還──かつて旅人が行き交い、祈りが置かれていった道。今ではすっかり細くなった旧道をなぞるように、住宅と舗装に包まれながら、その名残だけが息をひそめていた。名所ではないが、確かに誰かの暮らしと信仰が重なった場所。夏の陽に照らされた日蓮像の影を見上げながら、ただ静かに、通り過ぎる風の音に耳をすました。
