MSC Orchestra Cruise in Mahon, Spain [Old Town and Port Tour in 4K]

Welcome to a new episode! We are on the MSC ORCHESTRA cruise ship, and we will be transferring ashore using smaller boats as the ship cannot enter the port. Mahon, or Port Mahon in English, is the capital and second largest city of Menorca. The city is located on the east coast of the island, which is part of the archipelago and autonomous community of the Balearic Islands. Mahón has one of the longest natural harbors in the world: 5 kilometers (3 miles) long and up to 900 meters (3,000 feet) wide. The water is deep, but remains mostly clear due to the enclosed nature of the harbor. It is easy and fun to walk around Mahon, the friendly capital of the sophisticated holiday island of Menorca. This is an ideal spot for excursions, tourism and for getting to know the history of Minorca. Also, yachts and cruise ships from all over the world moor at its docks. Going around the Port of Mahon (Minorca) in one of the two Yellow Catamarans is the only way to see all its corners and to get to know all its secrets. Combining a visit to the centre of Mahon with a trip around the Port of Mahon on board our Yellow Catamarans is a not to be missed excursion for any visitor to the island of Minorca. Capital of the island since 1722, Mahon is home to some 30,000 inhabitants and it rises above a cliff of 30 metres. Its old quarter houses interesting buildings, markets, museums and fantastic viewpoints over the port that is the greatest attraction of the city. The city of Mahon was founded three thousand years ago. Jews, Moors, Turks and English – they all left their mark on the place, although now you can still clearly recognize the Spanish spirit. Mahon has the most specifically English buildings – because the English ruled for about a century. But the sloping streets, the palm trees swaying in the wind and, above all, the sun make you have no doubt in which country you are actually in. As well as the zest for life of the locals who greet each other cordially even if they don’t know each other. There is another important detail that will make you never forget this city. It was here that mayonnaise was invented – hence its name – by a chef, in 1756. For many years, Mahon has been competing for prestige with another large city, Ciutadella. The lively port of Mahon is lined with cafes and shops, and the city centre is a unique blend of English Gregorian houses and Catalan Gothic architecture. It is also home to an airport. Its population in 2021 was estimated at 29,125. I visited this museum where entry is free. The Feast of Our Lady is actually the Festes de la Mare de Déu de Gràcia in Mahón, Menorca, and takes place in early September, culminating on September 8 with processions, horse races, and fireworks. The festival is also known as the Fiestas de Gracia and honors the Virgin Mary, with important events on the 7th and 8th. As you can see, there are many art objects, paintings, chandeliers, traditional costumes During a walk through the streets of the historic center, you can discover the rich Spanish, French and English heritage that permeates the entire city with different architectural styles. A whole sea of culture awaits you. You can admire the majestic Cathedral of Santa Maria; it contains a monumental organ inside Also worth visiting is the Teatro Principal, built in 1829, which continues to offer wonderful shows, the Church of Carmen, the largest temple in the city, and next to it, the monastery, which houses a market for local products. On Isabel II Street are most of the mansions of Mahón. And the Can ‘Oliver Palace, which is now an art center. You will discover unique places bathed in the light of the Mediterranean, as well as shops where you can enjoy the best dishes of local cuisine. The Church of Santa María is famous for its impressive organ, which dates back to the early 19th century and is one of the largest in Europe This church, located in the heart of Mahon, Menorca, is a fine example of neoclassical architecture. Built between 1748 and 1772, its interior features an amazing collection of religious art and intricate woodwork. The church is a focal point for cultural and religious events in the area, and its organ concerts are a highlight for visitors and locals alike. The Iglesia de Santa María is a landmark with deep historical and cultural importance in Mahon. Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel The construction of the church began in 1726, in the context of fierce conflicts between the Carmelite and Franciscan monks. The latter did not want a new religious order to be established in the city and therefore allowed only a small portion of the building to be built Halting construction until 1750 Over the next four years, construction continued up to the transept, and in 1802, the transept was completed, along with the dome, presbytery, chapel of the Blessed Sacrament, and sacristy. The floor plan is in Latin cross, with side chapels covered with a barrel vault The ring vault of the nave allows for a large window above the chapels and provides abundant light inside. The transept is crowned with a dome with four rosettes and a skylight. This is the first church in Mahón where the neoclassical style is reflected in the restrained ornamentation. Proportions and clarity are evident in all the spaces. The feeling of space when walking under the arches that separate the chapels cannot be perceived in any other church. The main facade was left unfinished, and the side facade presents the buttresses on the right side of the transept in a very simple sequence of volumes, of great compositional efficiency. With the confiscation of Mendizabal in 1835, the monks were expelled. Over time, the monastery housed a prison, courts and a school. The carved consoles on the ground floor are particularly remarkable. It was restored in 1941 The city is famous for its impressive natural harbour, Georgian buildings and its role as a historic port town. It is the birthplace of mayonnaise (yes, the condiment!) and is also known for its local gin, Xoriguer, which you can taste directly at the distillery. Around Mahon, clothing stores are a bit more spread out in the old town, along the main pedestrian shopping streets (Calle Nueva, Calle Del Angel). Shopaholics love Mahon, which is as much a shopping paradise as any self-respecting capital. Although things here are a bit more low-key than in a big city, you’ll still find all sorts of reasons to head to the Euros. Mahon’s main square is Plaça d’Espanya. Tourist attractions in Mahon
