In episode 49 of “Atlas in Vietnam,” I’m leaving central Vietnam and taking a 12-hour overnight bus across over 500 kilometers to a place in Vietnam almost completely deserted by tourists: Buon Me in the central highlands of Vietnam , the coffee capital of Vietnam. Look, this is my balcony . I leave early and come back late every day, never sitting here properly. Today is our last day in Hoi An. We’ll go for a walk in the fields later, and then leave Hoi An for southern Vietnam today. Hey, the car is here. I see a lot of the Grab guys wearing slippers and socks. We can see these: many residents have lots of trees planted in their yards, it looks pretty green: papaya trees, jackfruit trees , banana trees, coconut trees. But when I got here, I found I wasn’t that hungry. Let’s have a cup of coffee first, and then come back for lunch later. Vietnam has a total of nine World Heritage Sites. Hoi An Ancient Town is the only historical town in Vietnam to be inscribed as a World Heritage Site. So, I’ve filmed several episodes in Hoi An, covering food, history, and scenery. Hello, how much is 50,000 Vietnamese Dong (about 2 US dollars) to experience riding a water buffalo? I’ve never ridden one since I was a child. Okay, oh, so funny. ah , okay , I saw this rice paddy. Champa Girl, a Vietnamese folk game, was introduced in this episode . This is a rice field restaurant. You can see the scene of the rice fields . The rice planting here is quite late. I have been planting rice in my hometown for a while, one or two months. There is only Vietnamese menu here. This is mainly frequented by locals. Bamboo tube rice is 29,000 Vietnamese Dong. The last meal of the last day in Hoi An was roast duck noodles. This cup seems to be lemon tea . These lemon teas 30,000 Vietnamese dong costs about 9 yuan (about 1.3 US dollars) in these shops . I stayed for 3 nights and 4 days. Now I am packed and ready to leave for the next stop. In fact, when we arrived in Vietnam, we saw many places selling coffee, and there were coffee shops everywhere in the streets and alleys. Later, I looked up information and learned that Vietnam is the second largest coffee producer in the world. Brazil is the largest, accounting for 35% , and Vietnam’s coffee production accounts for 17% of the world’s total. So now we are going to Vietnam’s coffee capital, Buon Me in southern Vietnam, to explore its coffee industry. The motorcycle guy just dropped me off at the bus stop, and then I waited for this bus. Luckily, I’ll pass by the Marble Mountains that we visited a few days ago when I’m returning to Da Nang from Hoi An. I ‘ll take this overnight bus from Da Nang to Buon Me Thuot, the coffee capital of Vietnam. But I find that I can’t move at all because yesterday many motorcycle taxi drivers took six or seven minutes to get to me. I wanted to choose a motorcycle taxi driver who was closer to me, so I canceled five or six times. He said that I can’t take a motorcycle taxi today and I have to wait 24 hours before I can take one again. So now I want to go to the bus station in Da Nang, but I find that I can’t take a taxi at all . I stopped some motorcycle taxi drivers on the roadside. They just chatted for a few minutes, then they received an order and then went about their own business. So, there are still two hours left. I’ll have a cup of coffee here and edit a video. I’ll think of a solution later. I should also stop the Grab driver on the roadside. This cup of coffee is 15 yuan (about 2.1 US dollars). Gong Cha, wow, this coffee has a strong flavor. After about 15 minutes, I finally stopped a motorcycle on the roadside. The pick-up point is about 7 kilometers from Da Nang Bus Terminal. The motorcycle drove about 1/5 of the distance on the fast-paced road. I was very embarrassed and shouted to stop the motorcycle . No more going to Buon Ma Thuot! Maybe after the upcoming 13-hour overnight bus ride, I will be going to a very unknown place. Buon Ma Thuot can be said to be a place that tourists don’t go, and even bloggers don’t go. There are almost no Chinese bloggers who have been there on the Internet. Maybe it was because I was nervous and felt like I was going to faint at the back of the motorcycle . But the main reason, I think, was that I didn’t eat too little that day. During my trip to Vietnam, I felt like I was on the verge of fainting several times . If I fainted in a foreign country with no one to turn to, I would be in trouble. Even though I had spent 300,000 Vietnamese dong (about 13 US dollars) to book a ticket to Buon Ma Thuot, and it was all wasted , I still decided to rest for a night in Da Nang. That night in Da Nang, I felt like I was in a state of shock. After getting off the motorcycle, I could say that I was so hungry that I ate anything I saw on the roadside . I was not picky at all. It was as if eating it would save my life. It was so exaggerated. Don’t worry, I will definitely eat on time in the future. As for this, I think the room cost 140 yuan (about 20 US dollars). Yes, it’s okay. Originally, I was supposed to take an overnight bus to Buon Ma Thuot tonight. Because of health reasons, I’ll take it easy. There ‘s no rush. Stay one more night in Da Nang. This is iced water , this is iced tea , and this is salt coffee. It’s only 12 yuan to drink together . This salt coffee has a salty and sweet taste, which is quite special and not too sweet. Friends, I’m now at Da Nang Bus Station. This is in central Vietnam , which is also Hue, Da Nang, and Hoi An . I ‘ve been there for about 10 days . Now I’m finally leaving for the southern part of Vietnam. The first stop in South Vietnam is Buon Ma Thuot, the coffee capital of Vietnam. This is the overnight bus I’m going to take tonight. It will take about 12 hours and I’ll arrive at 6:30 tomorrow morning. The last time I took an overnight bus, it was quite painful because I basically couldn’t sleep the whole night and my head hurt because it took too long. This time, there’s no way because if I’m going to Buon Ma Thuot, it seems I can only take a bus. Ah, I changed another bus. It turns out it’s cheap for a reason (250,000 Vietnamese dong is about 10 US dollars). This is the overnight bus I took in China more than ten years ago. It was a simple double-decker with three rows , a blanket , a bottle of water , and a place to stretch your legs. Ha, if I knew it was like this, I would rather spend a few dozen more yuan to take the overnight bus just now. I didn’t know it was like this, so I still slept on the upper bunk. 18:12 Ouch, it was shaking left and right. I looked at it. The straight-line distance from Da Nang to Buon Me Thuot is about 300 kilometers. Let me correct it. From Da Nang to Buon Me downtown, it is 549 kilometers. Look at the cloud over there. Today’s morning market is about to start. The sunset was beautiful. Many people got off the bus. Some had gotten off gradually since last night . I was the last one to get off. An inexplicable emotion arose, both desolate and heroic. I’m not a courageous person, but in a foreign country, I ‘m wandering everywhere, from north to south , covering thousands of kilometers. Maybe it was (because of the headphones), listening to very sad and heroic music. It was dawn again, watching the sun rise . I arrived at the Buon Ma Thuot bus station at 5:44 , which seemed to be an hour earlier than expected. There were many motorcycle taxi drivers. This guy kept giving me all kinds of seasonings: two beef ribs, two pieces of pig blood, a plate of vegetables, and some chili . My first breakfast in Buon Ma Thuot. I’ve almost never had such an early breakfast. 5:30 in the morning. Breakfast at 5:30 in the morning. China, China, yeah, yeah , uh, China. Uh, look at the spareribs. They’re the same as in the north, with bean sprouts, lettuce, mint, lemongrass , and banana flowers . These spareribs are a bit tough and hard to chew. Eating them feels like eating a bowl of vegetable noodles. After finishing them, the two pieces I just ate were beef ribs. Hello , Vietnamese. The first thing you have to drink in the morning is a cup of coffee. On the way from the bus station to my hotel, you can see two things. One is the elephant patterns everywhere, and the other is the coffee culture. There are many coffee shops of all sizes on the roadside. Look, there is an elephant across the street . This is an elephant park. Because there are no tourists in this city, the streets don’t feel particularly noisy or crowded, compared to the busy traffic in Hanoi and Hong Kong. It’s a noisy scene here, with a sense of a secluded small town. I’m waiting for the hotel to clean because I want to check in at 7:30, so I need to pay an extra 30% of the room rate. The original price was around 120 yuan (17 US dollars), but I ended up paying about 150 yuan (about 21 US dollars). Unpacking the hotel in Buon Ma Thuot: A refrigerator, a wardrobe, one or two small windows, a bed , a table, a cabinet, and there’s a wardrobe for drying clothes. It’s a pretty small room . I chose to spend an extra 30 yuan (about 4 US dollars) to check in early because I really wanted to take a shower and rest. I didn’t sleep well last night . There are two instant noodles and two bags of coffee and potato chips, but what is this? This looks like two bottles of white wine. This is the first time I’ve seen such glass bottles in a hotel. Is it water or wine , but there’s no price tag . There are drinks in the refrigerator, toiletries , Coke, Red Bull, mineral water, and milk. Hotels in Vietnam are different from those in China. They always have both air conditioning and fans. I feel like this one was recently renovated. Many hotels I’ve stayed in Vietnam recently have hot water, but it ‘s not very hot. Uh, after taking a shower , I’ll rest here for a while. Later, we’ll go to Vietnam’s coffee capital and experience the unique charm of this coffee street stall in the streets and alleys of Buon Me.
