キアンブとニャンダルア、どちらが活気のある首都でしょうか?キアンブとオル・カルーの両方の町を訪れました
Hello everyone and welcome back to another exciting episode. I’m back to the beautiful county of Nandara, county 08. And today we are visiting its capital, Old Calao, one of the least developed county capitals in the country. And there’s one thing that almost everyone who visit the town for the first time seems to agree that something is very wrong with all Kalao. I would point fingers, you be the judge. Just watch and observe and I want you to tell me at the end of the video what is missing here. We’ll be hitting the town in less than a minute. But first, the oldtimer needs to stretch a leg as I show you something. Some beautiful lands here and there quite flat and aribu. I’m told it is the planting season here in Yandaro County. On the other side, the beautiful blue mountains. That is the Abadas, the longest mountain in the country, not the tallest. And the gray area over there. I’m sure you can see it. That’s the ring. And it will be here in less than 30 minutes. I don’t know whether you can see something down there. There is a modern civilization. I just zoomed for you to have a better view. That is the beautiful town of Old Calao. We’ll be hitting there in a few. Well, let’s get into the town center. We will explore it deep and wider. I will take you around both the town and the residential area. I will also show you the old town where everything started. Remember this is not a new town. It’s quite old probably more than 100 years. In fact, history goes that one field marshall dead and Kimi used to work around this place before he decided to go to the forest and start the war. There is an old photo of Kimadi and his brother taken around this place. I hope I’ll find it and probably share it. But initially this is the starting point of all color town. There are four major ways that you can use to approach Allow Town and the first one is coming from Woohi area which is the one I’m using. The second one is coming from Gilgill and the third one is coming from Nuru town. There is also a road that goes all the way to Nakuru town. I also be showing you that one. But first I want to turn right so that I can see what this side of the town has to offer. For information the road that I’m about to join is the Gilguru road. And so if I continue driving this way, I’ll be hitting Yahuru town in about 40 minutes. The town is only 35 km from here. While Gilgill, which is on the opposite side, is only 32 km from All Calao. Remember we are in the outskirt of the town. This is part of Allao, the capital of Nandaro County. In fact, the governor’s office is around the corner. Also, the legislative arm of the county government, the county assembly is run from this area. Remember, we said we watch, but we don’t judge. I will be giving you some numbers as far as the town’s population is concerned. Quite interesting. You need to hear that. I will also tell you the history of this town and where the rain started beating it. And as promised earlier, I’ll take you both to the town center and the old Kalao Oldtown. But in the meantime, let me take this opportunity to welcome you to our YouTube channel, Village to Town TV. A channel that is dedicated to continue showcasing beautiful villages, towns, and cities across the continent of Africa. Thank you for the love and support you have continued showing, Mr. Lone Traveler. I don’t feel alone anymore. The numbers are growing crazy ways. And for those who are requesting for private videos through my WhatsApp number which is on the screen, thanks to the Almighty, I have already cleared the backlog for this week. And this how it works. Maybe there’s a place you have some really good memories about. Probably you grew up there or maybe your first love used to live there. Or maybe it’s your home area and you are far away from this country. So you just give us the details of the area and you leave the rest to us. Now back to the video and I just turned around a few seconds ago. I want to go to the other side of the town since the Yahuru side was not given. There’s a lot of open empty spaces. So let’s try the Gilgill side and see what’s up. Well, history goes that long time ago when there were no counties and there were just districts that is before the 2010 constitution. The capital or the headquarters of the then Yandaro district was Nahuru town. If you have been to Nyuru town, I’m sure you will concur with me that the town is more developed than all Kalao. And so for years most investors in Yandaro County invested in Yahuru forgetting other towns like Alcalao, Jabini and Engineer. But something happened in 2013 when devolution was implemented as per the new constitution. Well, a dispute emerged between Yandara and Likipia counties, both claiming that Yahuru was part of their land. And this dispute was triggered, of course, by the love for money. Remember, Nehuru was a big town. So, revenues in terms of taxes for the county government was guaranteed. Yahuru is also a tourist attraction. Remember the homes on falls the tallest waterfall in the country is in the town and so both new county government wanted part of the cake. After some years the dispute was solved and guess who lost. Your guess is as good as mine. Of course, the beautiful Nandara County lost and they were left with no option but to go and start a fresh. A new capital was needed and that’s how they settled on allow. So, one thing you’ll notice is that most facilities here are brand new. For instance, you can see allow stadium on my left. It is under construction. You can see the blue gate on my left. In short, these guys were forced to build everything from scratch. Just name it, stadiums, offices, and other infrastructures. A good case scenario. Imagine you marry this beautiful lady for 30 years and you have six kids. You take them all to beautiful schools all the way to the university and immediately you finish nurturing them and you’re about to open a bottle of champagne to celebrate. A guy comes out of nowhere, take you to court and claim the wife and the kids are his and boom, you lose. And remember by then you are an oldtimer just like Mr. alone traveler and so you’re forced to go back to the drawing board, get a new wife and start all over again. I don’t know whether that makes some sense, but that’s exactly what happened to Nandaro County as far as allow the capital is concerned. Well, I’m sure you can see the whole town from this side. It’s quite beautiful. You can see it entirely, but I want to step outside and get a nice clear shot of this view. There’s a lot of empty land for expansion. And so for my investors, there’s a lot of potential here. You can see the beautiful Badas Mountain up there. Rain is still on the way. And remember, I have not visited the town center, so I have to keep moving. It’s a beautiful day here in the town of Alcalao, the capital of Nandaro County. I’m definitely having a good time although the rain is threatening Mr. Lon Traveler. It’s April 2025 18th. Happy birthday to my big brother Steve Mutumbu all the way from the United Kingdom. Now you are becoming a real oldtimer. I’m also reminded it is a good Friday. Special shout out to all my Christian brothers and sisters. Enjoy to the maximum and be careful during these Easter holidays. Well, I’m looking for a way to get to the interior part of the town and I can see one here on my left. We want to see what this side of all Kalao looks like. Well, it is clear that the human traffic in the town is not that big, which raises some red flags as far as businesses are concerned. I can see the town’s bus terminas right across. Not as busy as we had expected. I can see the town is almost empty and it’s around 12:30 p.m. I wonder where is everyone. Remember the high human traffic speaks volume about a place in terms of business opportunities as higher number of people provides a readily available market for the existing businesses. But it seems like this is not the case in allow. Well, the green building right ahead on my right, it seems like it is the tallest building in the town. It also seems like it’s new. I don’t know when it was erected, but by looking at it, you can tell Alao’s future is super bright. Well, we are about to hit the main road here. And on my left, the road goes all the way to Nakuru through Dondori village. Quite a popular one. And on my right, it connects to the main road that comes from Yahuru and goes all the way to Gilgill. Well, in case you noted, I just turned around. The green building I was talking about is on my left and I’m going to add Dondori or Nakur town. I want to have a glimpse of the old town which I’m told it is on this side of the town. And as you can see the rain is here. Well, let’s quickly check at the numbers in terms of the population. And the small town of Allo, the capital of Nandara, has a total population of 13,234 people. And that is according to the Kenyan Bureau of Statistics. This was a great increase from 7,10 years ago. And in terms of gender distribution, 6,566 are males representing 49.6% of the aggregate population while 6,667 are females which is about 50.4% of the total population. So the difference between the two genders is 101 in favor of women. which is not bad. And I remember only one person identified as interex. I want you to look at the buildings on my right. I’m sure you are noting that they are a bit old. The same also applies on my left. And although they are painted, you can easily tell that most of them are more than 50 years old. And for many years, this was the face of Old Cloud Town. Well, I know some of you are wondering like why the town has such a small population and yet it is one of the biggest towns in the county. In fact, it is the headquarters something somewhere is not making sense. But I think the best explanation is that well Nandaro County is one of the least urbanized counties in central Kenya. Most people in the county are villagers meaning that for lack of a better term they live in up country. Well, according to the Kenyan Bureau of Statistics, abanization in Yandaro County is only 8.9%. Meaning that out of 100 people you meet, only eight of them live in urban centers. This is quite low. You can compare it with other counties in the region. Urbanization in Kimbu County is at 60.8%. 8% meaning that out of 10 people you meet in Kiamu six of them lives in towns. Muranga comes second with 36.3%. Followed by Ner at 34.7%. This means that Nandaro average is below the country’s average which is 32.3%. Well, I want to turn right so that I can go deeper to the residential part of the town. We want to see how people here live. It is also good to know that abandonization does not directly mean economic empowerment. For instance, I’m sure most of you can agree with me that at 8% is the most or it is one of the least urbanized counties in the country. But hear this. According to the World Bank, Nandaro County is the fastest growing in Kenya with a GDP growth of 10.6% as of 2022. That tells you that the country’s economy is growing with a double digit. I stand to be corrected, but I don’t think there’s any country in Africa that is growing with a double digit rate. Another thing you should note is that Nandaro is the fifth richest county in Kenya by GDP per capita with a GDP per capita of $2,482. Well, for my people who are not well acquainted with economic jagons, this simply means that if you take the entire county’s wealth, which is estimated at 4.6 6 billion US and divide it with the number of people living in the county, each person will get $2,482 which is the GDP per capita. I want to take you to the real estate segment so that we can know the cost of land or the cost of renting apartment in town. But before then, I have a surprise for you. I’m just curious. Have you ever seen the flag for Yandaro County? There we go. Tell me what do you think about it on the comment section down below? Is it a hit? Is it a miss? just tell us on the comment section and we’ll appreciate. In terms of the real estate, I saw a plot of land measuring 50 by 100 which is an eighth of an acre going for 1.7 million Kenya shillings. I saw another one also in town going for 1.8 million shillings that is in Kenyan currency. And the main catch was this plot touches the tarmac and they in the city center. I also saw another plot in the residential areas around all kalao and it was going for 700,000 Kenya shillings. Of course you know the difference result from the fact that one is a commercial plot and the other is a residential plot. Hello everyone. I’m making my way to Kimu town which is the capital of Kimbu County and it is only few kilometers from the national capital Nairobi. Actually it is only 16 km and of course this is not your ordinary town. Foremost it has one of the most educated population in the country. I’ll be telling you more about that. It also boast of having four golf courses despite being a small town. Apart from the town CBD, I’ll also be showing you the old town which is still intact. In fact, the lorry ahead is going that direction. I’ll be going there later in the video. And apart from the residential area, I will also be visiting a nearby slam in the town and see how high population and cost of living are affecting this town. But before I get there, let me take this opportunity to welcome you to our YouTube channel, Village to Town. A channel that is dedicated to continue showcasing beautiful villages, towns, and cities across the continent of Africa. We are dedicated to visit every village and town in our continent starting with the 290 constituencies in Kenya and now we are in Kimu County. And what was a better way of concluding Kimbu constituency than doing Kimu town which was also requested by many. But next week we’ll be moving to our next sub county. So if you have not yet subscribed make sure you do so which is absolutely free. We want to visit and document every village and town whether small or big including where you come from. So make sure you subscribe so that we can visit this beautiful country together. Now back to the video and we are approaching the town center and Kiamu hospital is on my right. I wanted to show you but they don’t allow personal cars to get inside unless you are having a very sick patient and this is because the facility is quite congested which results from the fact that it is in the town center. In fact there are plans sometimes back to vacate the hospital to some other rural area. I don’t know what happened to the plan but probably the government bureaucracy or too much politics on the issue. You know how Kenya is. We tend to analyze everything from a political point of view. It is also good to note that this is a level four hospital unlike what most of you expect from the county headquarters since there is a trend in the country where the biggest hospitals are in the county headquarters. But this is not the case for Kimbu County as the biggest hospital is in Vika town which is Vika level 5 hospital which is only one step behind the national referral hospitals such as Kenyata National Hospital. A lot of politics were also involved in making Kimbu town the county capital as some people felt that Vika town deserved it as it is the biggest remember the used to be the most industrialized in the country and I don’t know whether the status quo continue and those who are supporting Kimu to be the capital argued that it is at the central point as far as the 12 constituencies are concerned while vika is on the Remember the town is on the border where Kimu meets Muranga and Machako’s counties. The town’s main fresh produce market is on my right. And I want to go around so that I can show you. I hope it’s not chaotic since this is not a small town. I’ll be giving you its numbers as far as population is concerned in a few. The market is on the left and the road is quite congested and it seems like a oneway traffic which is because some vendors are selling their goods along the road which I don’t know your opinion about that but to me I have no issue since everyone have a duty to place food on their table and there is this gentleman with a kid and it seems like he want to speak to me I don’t know what is the issue but it is good to listen to all since everyone got a story. The gentleman just told me that I was driving on the wrong side of the market. In fact, it is illegal to drive on this street, especially on this direction that I’m heading and I have no option but to turn around. In fact, if the town’s ascaris got me here, I’ll be in hot soup, which means more trouble for Mr. Lone Traveler. And I could not thank the gentleman enough for saving my shallow pockets. May God bless him and his son. And that’s why I told you learn to listen to all even the dump story. That is an English adage. It’s not my own wisdom. And now we are back on the main road which goes all the way to Limuru town. And everyone is going about their business despite the scorching sun. But it is what it is. This is a third world country or rather a developing country and sometimes making a living is not a walk in the park. You can also see the town is quite big with pretty modern buildings. They are built back to back next to each other. It seems like every space counts and that tells you what to expect about land’s value in the area. I can see the governor’s portrait on the billboard who is one governor Kimmanu Matangi and for those who don’t understand the local dialect the second name mean that the guy who distribute tanks while sometimes kiku have a peculiar way of naming themselves and I want to divert a little bit from the main road to see whether or not the town is growing only along the main road. I once heard such rumors about Kimu town but I never wanted to believe since I had this illusion that Kimu is one of these big towns especially being the capital of the second most populated county in the country and also the richest and I hope you can see the tall buildings across the valley in front of me that’s the old town which you’ll be visiting later but before then I would want you to tell me whether they’re saying that the town has only developed along the road is true based on what you can see and remember I just made a few turns from the town center and it seems like we are right in the middle of the residential area. Well, the buildings are quite modern, and I can see there are new upcoming ones. And I’m told to live in this side of the town, you need to have some deep pockets since for a good two-bedroom apartment, you’ll need between 20,000 Kenya shillings and 30,000, which is not a small fit, especially for the workingclass majority. And to get a one-bedroom apartment, you will need between 15,000 and 20,000, which is between 120 and $180. And we are back to the main road. And I’ll be looking for another way to get into the residential area. I want to get a clear picture. It’s crazy how the town is driving along the road, especially business- wise, but nothing much is going on on the background. I’m told that a good studio apartment cost as much as 10,000 Kenya shillings which is about $70 US. And for those of you who are watching us from the west, especially from North America and Europe. And by the way, I’m super grateful for your continued support. May God bless you. I know most of you might be thinking that this is a small amount of money, but it is not. in a country with an average wage of 30,000 Kenya shillings which is about $220 US per month. But remember Kimu town is one of the most expensive towns in the Nairobi metropolitan area both in buying and renting properties. And one of the factors that has really contributed to this high cost is the town’s close proximity to Nairobi which is the nation capital. In fact, it is only 16 km from here. Another thing is that Kimu has remained decent despite the rapid urbanization around Nairobi where some decent neighborhoods have been turned into concrete slams. But of course, this town’s fate is not yet sealed. As you can see, there’s a lot of buildings coming up. And of course, Nairobi’s population is expected to grow up to 14.5 million in 2050. from the current 4.5 million and of course most of the excess population will be distributed to other surrounding counties including Kiamu which has been the norm in fact some people’s considers Kimu as the officials Nairobi’s bedroom as most people’s works in Nairobi city but resides in Kimu county and of course the status quo is set to continue I want to turn around and I’m looking for a road that can get me deep into the residential area. I want to see how people is. I have just realized that if I had continued driving that way, I would have ended up in Dumbberry, which is only 3 km from Kamu Town. And of course, there was no need to do so since we have already done the Dumbberry video. In fact, it is up on this channel. Quite an interesting village. You can go and check it later. Well, this is one of the residential area and you can see the town is not very far from here. I hope you can see the tall building with blue and yellow. It is along the main road. The interior roads are not that bad. They are passible, but of course they not you can see which is not a bad thing as long as they are well maintained. In fact, they are better than in other town in the county such as Banana Hill. Well, there is this upcoming ghetto on my left where all the buildings are made of iron sheets. This seems to be quite old and the perimeter fence is also made of the same iron sheet. Some years back, especially in areas around Kiamu and Nairobi, this building technique was the best as it was quite affordable. But it is not the case anymore. As you can see, permanent houses are now common. There is another upcoming ghetto on my left. I want to show you. Wow, it feels awkward, especially when you see the tall modern buildings in the background. It feels like the town is on the verge of becoming a concrete jungle or a slump. I don’t know which side will win, but there is a very deep meaning to this, especially if you view it with an open mind. Because what do you expect when the rich buys almost all the available pieces of land in the town and build expensive houses targeting the middle class? Where do you expect the poor to go? Of course, they will find a way to survive and the fact that they can’t afford the expensive apartments. Of course, there’ll be a mushrooming of such ghettos. That’s why any affordable housing project should accommodate the need of everyone including the poor. But let me not dwell on that issue of housing. I know it’s quite controversial and some people might get emotional as it is a bit political in Kenya since there is no consensus on who exactly should be targeted by the government affordable housing project between the poor and the middle class. Well everyone, I’m cruising along Kirigitti Kimu town road. Of course, I’m within Kimu town and I’m from Kirkiti side if you know the town. And I have just diverted from the main road to this area which has a high concentration of government offices and I want to show you a few. Remember I told you that this is the county headquarter of Kimbu County and remember the county government is run from here and also it is good to know that the national government has a series of regional offices in this town since the town served as a district headquarters before the formation of Kimu County. And now in front of me is the county commissioner’s office who is responsible for the national government affairs at the county level such as security issues and pressing for the president’s agenda and on this side is Kiamu County Assembly. The writing is on the wall. This is where the county’s legislative work take place. And remember the county has a total of 60 words which is quite many especially when compared to other counties in Kenya. For example, Meu County has 30 plus other nominated members especially for the affirmative action and therefore Kamu County Assembly is a busy place and this other place I’m approaching on my left is the county birth certificate office. In fact, there’s always a lot of people especially on weekdays in this area. And so if you ever need a birth certificate or a death certificate on that matter, this is the place to be. It is right opposite Kimu station. Of course, I’m not only your tour guide, but I’m also your plug. And as you can see, I’m going to the main road, the famous Kimu road, which goes all the way to Limuru town. And my destination is Kamu Old Town, which is on the other side of the road. Most locals here refers to the old town as the Indian bazaar or Kahindi which means that Kimu town is highly associated with the Indian community which were among the pioneers in this small town. But before we get to the old town, let me give you a few demographic facts about Kimu town. And the town has a population of 8,15 people. 3,773 are men while 4,240 are women. Well, there is a quite a big gap there in favor of women, which is quite normal. The town also has 2562 households. And in terms of population density, Kamu town has a total of 5,769 people per square kilometer, which is quite densely populated. In fact, it is the highest in the neighborhood and it is even more higher than that of Kimu constituency which the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics estimate at 1,483 people per square kilometer. I also think that it is good to give you the numbers of Kimbu sub county which is home to Kimu town and the sub county which is also a constituency has a total population of 1445,000 people. 69,000 are men while 76,000 are women and there are a total of 48,816 households making it one of the most densely populated subcounties in the country. There’s something I want to show you on my right which is Kiamu prison which is the main prison in the area and the fact that the prison is right in the middle of the town is something that has been highly debated in the country since it is the case for most towns in the country and some people feels like such institutions are wasting prime land and they should be relocated to interior parts of the county to give more room for the building of modern infrastructures in towns such as stadiums and hospitals. I would really want to know your thoughts about the issue. Should we consider moving prisons to interior parts to allow for better use of the urban land they sit on? Well, write to us on the comment section down below. Well, we are just entering the old town and the road that we have just passed a few seconds ago on my left goes all the way to Kari town in case you never knew. You can also use the road to go to Limuru and that tells you that there are two routes that can take you to Limuru from Kimbu town and this is the old town. It is where everything started and the town was started during the colonial era by the hoits. The Indians who had been brought here in big numbers by the British government from India to assist in the building of Mombasa Uganda railway took a lot of interest in this area after the completion of the rail line. They established themselves as serious business people in this old town and that’s how the town ended up being called the Indian bazar. Some new buildings have been built to replace the old one but most plots remain with the old buildings. You can see the town looks quite old especially when compared to the main town that we have just visited. By looking some buildings it feels like I’m moving back to the 1960s and ‘7s. But of course it is evident that the old town has managed to keep up with the new town as business is driving here. The town is quite busy which is quite fascinating for a town that has already been replaced by a newer version. You can see that these buildings on my left have seen better days. Another thing that I found quite fascinating before coming here about this area is how Kambutton got it name. And as I was doing my research, I found that there are two version of the source of the name. And one version went that Kimu in Kiku language which is the primary language spoken by most people here means a place of shouts. The kind of shouts that people makes when they are in distress meaning that the area was quite chaotic and remember the town and the county shares the same name. The other version stated that the term kamu comes from the term bu which is the white substance you see when you blow wood ash or any kind of ash including from an active volcano. And I’m told if you go to Moranga, which is the neighboring county in the north and face the Kimbu direction while standing on a higher altitude area, you will notice the white substance in the sky which most ancient people from Muranga considered as the whitish ash from a burning wood. Thus referring to the place as Kamu. Well, I don’t know much about the two versions. Which one is right and which one is wrong? Maybe both are right. I don’t know. But I know a good number of my viewers comes from this county while others are a good students of history. So please tell us which version do you believe or if you have an alternative one, kindly share on the comment section below. And as I make my way out of the old town, let me give you another interesting numbers about Kimu that I found quite interesting. and that is on labor. Out of 127,000 people who are aged 5 years and above, 16,954 are actively working while 10,000 residents are jobless. Another interesting statistics about Kimu constituency that I found quite fascinating is the dominant floor material of the main dwelling units. This will tell you more about the living conditions of the people whether most are rich or poor. And of course this data is provided by the Kenyan Bureau of Statistics and was collected during the last general census. And it is state that out of 46,816 housing units only 5.3 had other floors. 28.5 had ceramic tiles while a majority of 61.9 had concrete or cement floor. And the data found that only 2% of the population had wallto-wall carpets. Well, let’s quickly check another set of data and that is the source of drinking water in Kimbu sub county and it is stated that 26.6% 6% of the population have water piped in their houses while 23% have water piped in their yards or plots while 5.8% relied on bottled water for drinking and consumption. Well, that is the creme de la creme of the community and only 3.7% relied on rivers for clean water. Well, that is quite fascinating for this subcount. It seems like it standards of living are way much better than most areas in this country.
