別府半日地獄めぐり|冷麺&とり天も楽しむ、ゆるり旅。
Yuu: Why’s it so blue? Yasu: Yeah, what’s up with that? Yuu: Didn’t you look it up, Mr. Kyushu? Yuu and Yasu’s Beppu Adventure: Umi Jigoku (Sea Hell), Toriten (Chicken Tempura), and Beppu Reimen (Beppu Cold Noodles) Yuu: Just got off the Beppu interchange! Yuu: So, Umi Jigoku is close by, but… Yuu: This totally looks like a traffic jam for Umi Jigoku. Yasu: Yup, it’s packed. Yuu: Anyway, we’re thinking of doing the Beppu hell tour. Yasu: Let’s do some sightseeing! Yuu: No idea what’s ahead, but it’s summer break, so crazy traffic, huh? Yasu: Yeah, tons of people. Yuu: Not moving at all lol. Umi Jigoku (Sea Hell) Yuu: It’s so hot, they gave us fans! Yasu: Staff at the entrance were handing them out. Yuu: That’s thoughtful of them! Yuu: Wait, what’s that? Can you ride on lotus leaves? Yasu: Yeah, I think you can!
Yuu: That’s a giant lotus! Yasu: Kids can ride it, I think.
Yuu: There’s a weight limit, right? Yasu: Weight limit? lol (You wanna try?) Yuu: Oh! …It’s 20kg max. Yasu: 20kg, huh? Yuu: Maybe double that for me? Yasu: Haha lol …Double? Yuu: Maybe triple, who knows! Yuu: Why’s it so blue? Yasu: Yeah, what’s the deal? Yuu: Didn’t you research it, Kyushu boy? It appears blue because of iron sulfate, silica, and how light reflects on the water. Yuu: By the way, how hot is it? Yasu: 98°C. Yuu: 98°C?! Yuu: You could boil eggs! Yasu: They’re probably selling boiled eggs here. Yuu: Whoa! Steam’s coming!
Yasu: Whoa! Steam alert! lol Yasu: Hot!! Yuu: You can’t tell through the screen, but there’s this sulfur… Yasu: Hot spring smell, right? Yuu: Now it’s super red! Yuu: Chinoike Jigoku (Blood Pond Hell) is right next to Umi Jigoku. Yasu: Great contrast, huh? Yuu: Add green, and we’ve got the primary colors! Yuu: Wasn’t the lotus pond kinda green? Yasu: Yup, green… primary colors! Yuu: We’ve got all three! Yuu: Painters wouldn’t run out of paint, but this isn’t exactly paint material, right? Yasu: It’s not like they’re giving it away, and it’s crazy hot! Yuu: There was a footbath, but it was super crowded. Yasu: So many people. Yuu: Mad respect for soaking in a footbath in this heat (35°C). Yasu: Heat makes you want it more. We just looked and passed lol. Yuu: Next up, Bozu Jigoku (Monk’s Hell)? Yasu: Bozu Jigoku’s right next door. Yuu: Next door? Walking distance? Yuu: Sweet! Yasu: Otherwise, you wouldn’t go, right? lol Yuu: Nope, not in this heat lol. Yuu: Shall we check it out? Bozu Jigoku (Monk’s Hell) Yuu: Here’s Bozu Jigoku! Yuu: About 500 years ago, in 1498, there was a temple here called Ennai-ji. Yuu: It got blown away when this hot spring erupted. Yasu: Big earthquake, right? Yuu: Apparently, the monks got blown away too. Yuu: Not sure how true that is lol. Yasu: If the temple got blasted, the monks probably did too lol. Yuu: So, the bubbles in this white hot spring look like monks’ heads. Yuu: Bald… can we say bald heads? Yasu: Didn’t say “bald” anywhere lol. Probably what they mean, though. Yuu: Like round monk heads. Yasu: Yeah, like monks’ shaved heads. Yuu: Between the temple getting blasted and the bubbles looking like monk heads, that’s why it’s called Bozu Jigoku. Yuu: That’s the story… true or not? lol Yasu: Who knows how true it is? Old tale, right? lol Yuu: In the middle of the hell tour! Yuu: Life’s kinda like a hell tour itself, huh? lol Yasu: Not much different? Then why bother touring? lol Yuu: Well, not *exactly* the same. Yasu: Gotta see a crazier hell, right? Yasu: Aren’t we here to pick our future hell? Yuu: You think we get to *choose* our hell? Yasu: Oh, no choice, huh? lol Yuu: It’s like a hotel’s “leave it to us” plan. Yasu: In hell, you can’t be picky lol. Yuu: Ask for non-smoking, get a smoking room anyway. Yasu: Bet they’d stick you where you *don’t* want. Yuu: Exactly! It’s hell! Yasu: My bad, my bad! lol Yuu: Ask for a twin room, end up with a double. Yuu: Sometimes you hit the jackpot, though, right? Yasu: Yeah, like a random upgrade. Yuu: I’m cool with an upgrade, no complaints there… Yuu: Wait, what were we talking about?
Yasu: Hell stuff… Yuu: Hell’s like a hotel, right? lol Yasu: A “leave it to us” hotel. Yukemuri Yokocho Tokiha Beppu Yuu: This is aosa and yuzu Toriten (Chicken Tempura). Yuu: Let’s start with the yuzu Toriten. Yuu: Think this is the yuzu one. Yasu: Haha, you’re guessing? lol Yasu: Citrusy and fresh? Yasu: The citrus flavor’s awesome! Yuu: Super crispy and fresh! Yasu: Super juicy! Yuu: Next, I’ll try the aosa Toriten. Ordered a tasting of three types of Toriten. Yuu: Piping hot! Yasu: How’s it taste? Yuu: Got that seaweed vibe. Yuu: Not my top pick, but it’s good. Yasu: Good for a change-up. Yuu: If you like seaweed salt chips, you’d dig this. Yasu: Yeah, it’s got that salty kick. Yuu: Kinda seaweed salty, right? Yasu: Yup, this one’s tasty too! Yuu: Now for the main event, classic Toriten! Toyoken, the birthplace of Toriten Yuu: A bit rich, but really delicious. Yasu: The OG flavor? Yasu: So crispy and tasty! Yasu: Seasoning’s just right. Yuu: Here’s Rokusei’s Beppu Reimen (Beppu Cold Noodles), let’s dig in! Yuu: Not at all the texture I expected! Yasu: Right?! Yuu: Thought it’d be like soba. Yasu: Expected slippery, chewy noodles, but… Yuu: It’s like firm konjac or something. Yasu: Almost like udon! Tastes like cold noodles, though. Yuu: Looks soba-ish, color-wise. Yasu: Kinda surprising flavor. Yuu: Perfect for this heat. Yuu: Toriten and Beppu Reimen in one go! Yasu: Beppu’s specialties. Yuu: Plus, it’s cool in here. Yasu: Yup. Yuu: No lines, or at least you wait in the cool. Yasu: Huge in this heat lol. Chinoike Jigoku (Blood Pond Hell) Yuu: Whoa, there’s an oni! Yasu: For real! Oh, the oni’s moving (it’s a costume). Yuu: Gotta be tough inside, it’s 35°C today. Yasu: Worried for the oni, they’re in real hell lol. Yasu: The one suffering most is… Yuu: Who else but the oni? Yuu: So, like… Yuu: Chinoike Jigoku had a huge eruption in 1927, shooting up 220 meters. Yasu: Wow! Yuu: This a monument for it? Is that what you call it? Yasu: lol, yeah, it says 220 meters down there. Yasu: That’s wild, a huge eruption! Yuu: Like Roppongi Hills height? Yasu: All that red spray shooting up?! Yuu: Exaggerated, maybe? lol Yuu: By the way, Chinoike Jigoku’s red from iron oxide. Yuu: They use the sediment to make an ointment for skin issues. Yasu: Good for the skin, then? Yuu: A hell that’s kind to your skin, who knew? lol Yasu: Right? lol Yuu: Might as well book into Chinoike Jigoku if I have to check into hell. (laughs) Yasu: Checking into hell lol. Yuu: Why’re we assuming we’re going to hell? lol Yuu: The footbath’s red too! Yasu: Red footbath, full of iron. Yuu: My sandals have Velcro, so taking them off’s a hassle… Yasu: Footbath or not? …You in? lol Yuu: Nah, I’m sweating buckets already. Yuu: If it’s good for skin, I’d rather dunk my face in lol. Yasu: Face in for a glow-up? lol Yasu: Should I dunk you in? lol Yuu: After that… I’d be okay? Yasu: That’d be rough lol. Yuu: Stuck in hell forever? lol Yasu: Scariest oni’s right here lol. Yasu: And that’s a wrap!
Yuu: …And done! Yuu: All done! Yuu: Checked out Chinoike Jigoku. Yuu: So, that’s the Beppu hell tour. Yuu: Not sure if it’s a model itinerary, but hope it helps! Yuu: Hope you guys find it useful. Yasu: Yup! Yuu: Just “yup”? lol Yuu: Next, we’re taking the Sunflower Ferry (Sunflower Ferry) to Osaka while we sleep—easy travel! Yuu: Big ship, so it’s chill. Yasu: Yeah, seems like it’s got great amenities. Yuu: Fun fact, this is our second time on the Sunflower Ferry. Yuu: So we kinda know the deal lol. Yuu: Check out the next one if you’re curious! Yasu: Please do. Yuu: Just “please do”? lol Yuu: That’s all you got? lol Yuu: Alright, that’s it for now! Yasu: Yup! Yuu: Catch you later, everyone! Thanks for watching!
