Tokashiki Island Okinawa
Tokashiki is one of the Kerama Islands in Okinawa, and it’s famous for its breathtaking underwater scenery. 🌊🐠
If you’re talking about Tokashiki underwater, here’s what it’s known for:
• Snorkeling & Diving Paradise – The waters around Tokashiki are part of the Kerama Shoto National Park, with incredible visibility (often over 30 meters).
• Colorful Coral Reefs – You’ll see both hard and soft corals, making it a living underwater garden.
• Marine Life – Tropical fish, sea turtles, manta rays, and sometimes even whales (especially in winter).
• Sea Turtles – Especially around Aharen Beach, it’s common to encounter turtles while snorkeling close to shore.
• Kerama Blue – The ocean here is known as “Kerama Blue” because of its surreal, crystal-clear turquoise color.
✨ Best Spots:
• Aharen Beach – Easy snorkeling right from shore.
• Tokashiku Beach – Famous for frequent turtle sightings.
• Diving spots – For advanced divers, there are underwater caves, drop-offs, and schools of pelagic fish.
Hiking & Viewpoints
• Several observation decks offer breathtaking views:
• Teruyama Observatory—overlooking both main beaches.
• Minato no Mieru Oka Observatory—panoramic views of Tokashiki Village.
• Kubandaki Observatory—near Aharen Beach, with coastal vistas.
• Hiking trails through forested hills showcase seasonal wildflowers and war memorials commemorating tragic wartime events.
Travel Tips & Logistics
Getting There
• Ferries and high-speed boats operate from Tomari Port (Naha):
• High-speed ferry: ~35–40 minutes, 2–3 trips/day.
• Car ferry: ~70 minutes, once per day.
Getting Around
• Local buses are infrequent. It’s best to:
• Rent a car, scooter, or bicycle
• Use taxi services, or arrange pickup via your accommodation or a tour operator
• Alternatively, trekking between the two main villages takes 60–80 minutes on foot, but the terrain is quite hilly.
Facilities & Visitor Info
• The Tokashiki Tourist Information Center is located in the port terminal and provides maps, schedules, and local advice—but English support may vary.
• Cash is essential—ATMs are rare, and showers at beaches may require 100-yen coins.
• Swimming season is best from May to October. Winter months (December–March) are cooler and better suited for whale-watching or nature exploration.
