This time we came to Taishan A phrase we often say is A Taishan in our country Dictionary — these are authentic items Different from the reproductions we just saw This one is in Guangzhou. I often say it was built by people from Taishan; the wife was half believing, half doubtful This is rice This is scorched rice Serve them separately like this Separated servings Ladies and gentlemen, we are here again Taishan Museum, once more here It’s saying clearly that it’s very valuable This place up here is on the mountainside Here, climb the stairs up Let’s take a look at some celebrities Ancestral home: Taishan He was born in Portland Joined the US military Because the Chinese Air Force refused to accept female pilots Could she be the first female pilot? She still had a cigarette in her left hand At the time she didn’t think it was unhealthy Instead it was a symbol of being fashionable At ten years old, he had already settled in the United States Dosan Town — this one is an emerging printmaker Studied fine arts The airplane is here Of course it’s not needed now There’s a cannon on the mountain and an airplane placed here Do you see that character behind “Taishan”? The third character I don’t know Taishan County Formerly still a county County Museum Taishan County Museum Hydroelectric turbine generator set Again, it was first used by people from Taishan Shipped over from the United States Made in the USA Using water to generate electricity Generating electricity after water passes through Talk about the story of your own family My maternal grandfather was also from Taishan As I just mentioned The plane, these instruments and equipment all have to be brought back from the United States or transported from overseas At that time, no one in the country recognized it What did my maternal grandfather do for a living? My maternal grandfather worked with boats That part about the ship, but he has never been to the United States When he was in Hong Kong he worked at a shipyard Later, because he launched a vigorous courtship of my grandmother Very intense, it is said Returning to the mainland Also worked in an automobile factory… At that time they didn’t seem to be called engineers But they were all very skilled After all, the skills were learned from outside sources There you can have a place Make your own contribution like this There are unearthed artifacts from Guangzhou Xianlie Road This is the Western Han. The Western Han was the era of the King of Nanyue. I’ve already gone around once One very bad piece of news is Now they’ve all become these Hair buns Or perhaps those exhibitions from the Song dynasty and Kangxi Originally talking about those galleries about Taishan people’s proud history They might be under renovation and not visible If any viewers want to come back and watch, you’ll definitely need to adjust your schedule. It’s okay—everyone, go back and watch the episode I watched last time Under renovation All of it is promoting beauty services; no need to come specifically to see it But it’s free, so whatever Kaiping’s museum is nice Also the one in downtown Jiangmen is very nice That one doesn’t exhibit things casually It’s all gone here Looks like it’s upstairs or something Not open yet The history of the people of Taisan striving Those Kangxi things you don’t need to go out of your way to see No way I remember last time There used to be a portrait in this spot on the left Now it’s become like this A light touch or heavy paint both look pleasing So it’s clear that in life some things you shouldn’t let them pass in front of you without looking at them I was very lucky last time I went If you happen to pass by when everyone comes back, drop in for a look Parking is very convenient at the entrance It doesn’t matter whether there’s anything to watch Seize the opportunity She said she’s very happy to have helped me out These things look very old It says replica and modern It’s a reproduction If it’s really from the Tang dynasty, take a look at everything — no need to be so picky The museum we went to earlier was closed Later we found out there’s also an Overseas Chinese Museum Truly a relentless stubbornness And I have never been to this Overseas Chinese Museum A ten-minute drive to go and see Transfer of motorcycle This is Xincheng Nowadays every city is like this — some new, some old Old things shouldn’t be torn down completely There really are a lot of KTVs Only when the economy is good are there many KTVs That is, willing to spend Bars, KTVs and the like I remember Guangzhou used to be like that too A whole street of bars KTV During the millennium it became more youthful Why not Guangzhou? Because of a younger demographic We’re almost at the museum now Let’s see if we can go in Can’t see it, nothing we can do This is Xincheng That is Xincheng District To understand a city, you can look at its museums Visit its markets and supermarkets I don’t think there are any. From the looks of it, it doesn’t seem to have a museum Filled with people Poly Mansion They’re all new buildings, different from those old ones just now And people live in these. Could these be apartments? 新向陽 Hong Kong New Sunward This place looks like a condo development Fully furnished two-bedroom, 290,000 I only see this Does the front look similar? Taishan has both new and old — how nice Taishan City Archives Bohai Hotel We’ve finally come to another museum again This is the Taishan City Archives This place is rather interesting There are apartments above There are many housing developments nearby Are you going to see the museum or the building? 299,000 57 square meters Might still be able to haggle There’s also a KTV There are actually many past visits to museums Coming here and seeing so many buildings and looking at the housing prices Actually I really want to know How much is that Poly Residence? Poly New Residence Poly Residence 650,000 One hundred square meters It’s still a house, not an apartment Very nice, a big luxury residence Different from the ones just now More expensive These are brand new With the dust jacket These are secondhand Six hundred-odd thousand — such a large housing estate Many choices Five thousand yuan per square meter, I think Has an elevator — fifty to sixty hundred yuan There are also 170 square meters Big enough Some are over six hundred thousand Earning dollars and coming back to retire is really great Not even a hundred thousand dollars is needed Domestic taxes are also low So living expenses are low — that’s what my wife means You don’t have to pay taxes every year Foreign countries have to pay property taxes every year China hasn’t implemented it yet Will we not know later on The nearby housing prices are basically about the same Poly New Residence 7,000 yuan This Starlight City Plaza is seventy thousand Country Garden we just passed by — five hundred thousand Country Garden, only five hundred thousand Coming here is naturally different Compared to the old city area we were at earlier It’s completely different Is it open? It should be open. Is the air conditioning on? Is it written? Taishan Overseas Chinese Cultural Museum pointing There’s also an ice room over there Starlight Ice Room, but it’s closed down The whole area is filled with housing developments, look at this place You can see it’s all houses I’ve never been here before These are seven thousand Compared to those just now that were a little over two thousand A little over two thousand or three thousand is different There is also a sightseeing bus, fifteen yuan It can go to many places Pedestrian street Park Chang Da Chang — all are attractions Taishan No. 1 High School, we’ve been there I haven’t been to Niushixiang Tongji Pagoda is under renovation Guishui Bay Tongji Tower is being renovated We are right here now Finally arrived here This place is much more fun Opening hours This is how you go up Very different from the one just now Even when you see these in front of you They are newly manufactured, not old ones They’ve all been recreated — the look of the arcade-lined streets This time we came to Taishan. One phrase we often say is A Taishan in our country An overseas Taishan It says here that it’s real This is the information I found this morning It’s about how Taishan people went out into the wider world 1850s 1.8 million overseas compatriots First, let’s take a look at the museum This place is much better than that other one a moment ago Just this move already feels different It should start by explaining the history of how Taishan was formed at the beginning Guanghai is actually this formidable During the Daoguang years Guanghai Fort Map 1839, still not yet 1840 There was already this The main point here is to say Their feeling of going outside Going to Southeast Asia and seeking fortune in the Golden Mountain According to what is shown here It should be when they went outside A period of history of going to Nanyang It was from Guanghai that they left Guanghai Pier Their first step was to go to Nanyang Via Hong Kong and Macau, then to the United States Going to San Francisco in the United States All of it is about the information I just talked about while having tea The reasons for emigrating abroad Including Making a living over there Because there are natural disasters here And then 1842 when the Treaty of Nanjing was signed From that time on British and American companies had the right to recruit Chinese workers They probably first went to the United States How this incident began In 1842 the Qing government We probably often say Exactly why the first person from Taishan went to the United States Is probably for the reasons That should be written here Treaty of Nanking signed in 1842 And the 1844 Treaty of Wanghia between China and the United States Granted this authority when American companies came over back then Hiring people That’s it — bring in labor Find people to go work and earn money Gold discovered in California’s Sacramento Valley Then people were recruited to go there to make a living and earn money Leaving home and family behind So overseas Chinese, especially people from Taishan Longing for home was intense back then; they left their hometown reluctantly As soon as they earned money they had to send it back — that’s how it was Both old and young are here Still need to borrow it back Borrow money to buy a boat ticket Then the money earned is deducted back from their wages Meaning foreign labor The dictionary of that time These are the real things Not like the reproductions we just saw Although these aren’t that old But it’s the real thing Everything is the real thing — learn English If you don’t understand English, what do you do when you get there? English Chinese You see the one on the right is Chinese Open the platform mountain Go to the United States more Those from Enping who like going to South America This Macau piglet restaurant Very difficult, of course difficult I also figured that even if you could fly to the U.S. now, it would still be very hard Don’t talk about that time Just making it there alive was already the first victory Making it over there was already winning the first step The Chinese laborers in Singapore at the time Singapore’s first step What are these gentlemen discussing? They must be talking about going out to sea and signing a contract. So he was on trial in court One person goes out, everyone goes out together Three generations of a family, the path to going abroad This is also very normal Baisha Town A Chinese emigrant family surnamed Yu who went to the United States Those deeds 1909 By then he had already returned to the country to marry and have children Went to the United States again This road Then Guangzhou appears here If you have money, buy a shop in Guangzhou Wherever people from Taishan go, you can see them here People from Taishan are in all these places So impressive All of them This is Venezuela I often joke that I’m learning Spanish They’re all things I’m interested in But some overseas Chinese were born there People from Taishan and Enping teach online There are many places like this Does anyone know exactly where this picture was taken? Can any viewers tell me? I really can’t tell But it should be from overseas Isn’t it? It should be from overseas I think it’s the same both above and below I guess the top one should be Bangkok, Thailand Because there are Thai characters Baiyujing It should be Thai script The one below this I just can’t tell I really can’t tell Can any audience member tell me? Probably from overseas — I guess it might be the United States Next, let’s look at the second exhibition hall Just now we talked about how people from Taishan went out to struggle in the wider world Then earn money and come back to invest in the mainland Or to give back to your hometown Jinshan Guest Nanyang Bo Why is it called Jinshan Actually it should refer to that area Digging for Gold Gold Mine A Letter from a Wife to Her Husband in America The Husband Has Gone to America War and conflict His hometown is in turmoil; he is very worried Told him not to return home from overseas He wanted to buy a maid to watch the house At that time a maid cost fifty or sixty yuan That Zhou-family woman Talking about buying a maid, which one is it exactly I don’t know A daughter-in-law wearing gold and silver Very imposing Returned one or two boxes NYQ NY I guess means New York — what does Q mean? Does any viewer know? They’re all very fitting now “Jinshan guests” refers to those in America who have money Now the money earned in Hong Kong isn’t spent in Hong Kong but in Shenzhen Of course Nanyang guest What does “荷包 ‘dah-bah dah-bah’ ” mean? Does anyone in the audience know That is, they all say they have money Jinshan guests are definitely the best If not a thousand, then eight hundred Hong Kong, on the other hand… Before, there was no way to come back from Hong Kong like there is now And to be honest, actually, Hong Kong is indeed a bit behind Jinshan, now it’s different For example, when you return to China from the US you have to spend money to take a plane But in Hong Kong you can just take the MTR and you’re there Five people are outside, only one is in mainland China Taishan is like this Some are from other parts of Guangdong Province Like my mother — actually my mother wasn’t born in Taishan either My maternal grandfather was born in Taishan Chonglou Town It was very hard when going to the United States Either building railways or digging for gold America’s railways Where does everyone live now How many street names do you recognize I recognize some of them Talking about them building the railway Gold mining Will send some money back Build railways and then gain knowledge then they can return to the country to build railways This is talking about agriculture, not about building railways Also, the laundering industry Has a big impact on the mainland I’ve done it before, I know I worked in a laundromat in the country All irons are like this The most old‑fashioned ones are like this — you put a lump of charcoal inside to iron clothes The water probably isn’t strong enough It should be here… I guess this one is steam-powered This one is steam-powered Ironing clothes—foreigners want to keep their clothes neat. Who will do it? They were actually all done by Chinese laborers Ironing clothes The development of the laundry industry It’s hard work washing clothes I know, I’m not the one responsible for washing clothes At that time I saw the factory workers all were very heavy-duty And there’s one more big issue with the laundry business Because its water has to be hot The workshop is very hot and very tough This one talks about Peru Cuban Chinese helped in the independence of Cuba and Peru Where do you live now How many places do you recognize London, England Liverpool Portland Although Chinese football is very poor but actually the Chinese national team’s main central defenders He was born in Liverpool He is from Taishan Wuyi is not Taishan It seems to be over in Jiangmen And also Vancouver Vancouver is like this This is Manila Actually Manila also has a Chinatown This one should be very familiar to everyone I want to be overseas One of the main centers of my audience should be Los Angeles New York, Hong Kong, Los Angeles should be the three biggest places Washington All of them are Toronto Toronto only has two sticks Receipt Donation Overseas Chinese Association It started in Singapore Penang, Malaysia Then went to the United States He said that before going to the United States, you must first go to Singapore and Penang. The most important thing is studying, that’s right. If there is money—if I were an overseas Chinese with money, I’d send it back I must have donated money to attend school There are the most in Malaysia, and some still remain Build a Guangdong school Mathematics Chinese Language English This is the way to carry it forward and make it flourish We’ve seen it — definitely worth coming here We don’t need to go over there this morning Not even worth watching for a minute This place is different — there are lots of things to see here And of course you can check out the second floor when you’re done Coming up to the third floor, there are still exhibition halls This is the train station This one speaks to love for country and family—back when wars raged How they help the country from the outside Resist foreign enemies Railway The whole locomotive is here There really are tracks laid underneath There’s a railway here That train is for real The station back then was exactly like this Seeing the entire railway track transportation It was already so developed back then Now you can drive there in no time Going to Jiangmen All the way down to Baisha Far away Doushan, Chonglou Now driving gets you there quickly; it used to be very difficult Where does the money for the revolution come from? Could it be that everyone really generates power out of love? That money comes from overseas Chinese donations Dr. Sun Yat-sen went to the Chinese Revolutionary Alliance in Chicago Then he went to San Francisco to raise funds for the fight Do you recognize what this one above is? The painting above The one above is Huanghuagang Huanghuagang also has a Statue of Liberty on it 72 Martyrs’ Tomb — written in Chinese characters Go take a look in a few days Promote that this is very great — human equality Written by Feng Yuxiang This one is in our Guangzhou I often say it was built by people from Taishan. My wife was somewhat skeptical This is Aiqun Building. Does it look like an American building? It’s still like this now — you can still go up This says Ai Qun Building Overseas Chinese in the United States: Chen Zhuoping, Chen Boxing, and others Raise HK$2,000,000 Back then it was HK$2,000,000 And it also had to be designed by someone from Taishan Completed in 1937 Isn’t that impressive? The No. 1 Building in South China A high-rise building with a steel frame structure Impressive Ai Qun Building What is there, and how much of it is left now It turns out that theater, the one in front of the performance hall Was all built by people from Taishan Xiti Theater Changshou Cinema — all of them built movie theaters Xinhua Theater was later demolished I don’t know where Taiping Street is There used to be theaters all along Guangfu North If they’re making money they’ll go to Guangzhou to buy houses Yonghan North Road is where the Yonghan Cinema is. Jinsheng — it was all built by people from Taishan. Around that time we need to go back to the hotel to check out It is now 12:19. Check-out is at 1:00. We’ll check out and go get something to eat. Relax nearby for a bit, walk around the mall, then return to Guangzhou Go back and check out first, then we’ll talk If we can’t think of where to eat, in the city center we might go to Fourth Brother’s place to have eel rice Tentative We’ll talk about checkout later Isn’t this hotel at 2 o’clock? They want me to check out at 1 o’clock Doesn’t matter Made a profit anyway And this bus goes to the various tourist attractions This sightseeing bus Right now it’s parked here because it hasn’t started operating yet Could it be the eel rice bus? Of course not Taishan City Sports Stadium Xinning Gymnasium New district Much smaller, easier to get around than the old district There aren’t many people walking on the road either It’s very sunny This should be the gymnasium Many tourists like us go to the old museum And there’s nothing to see again Luckily we’re smart and search one more time No reason New building Super beautiful There are also some very old ones here that no one lives in They should be fenced off so they can’t be demolished There are some old houses over here too All have villas These are old village houses that need to be demolished There is no clear distinction between new and old The old district hasn’t been touched It hasn’t really been demolished much The new district was all bulldozed and replanned But it feels like the crowds are mostly over here in the old town area Ahead is the pedestrian street We walked past the pedestrian street and returned to the hotel There are dai pai dongs here — if you want to eat, this is the place We’re staying at this hotel This domed one It turns out our hotel is very beautiful It doesn’t look the same at night We are staying on the 7th floor There’s a KTV We had lunch — went up the hill to eat claypot rice Is this Taishan or still Taishan? It’s just a farmhouse Walking through the streets and alleys to find delicious food Don’t know whether it’s good or not See when we get there Today we went to many places in Taishan The old town areas and the new town areas And these are really called mountain areas Are we out of here? No It’s already like a county road Is there delicious food here? Not sure Should be out of the provincial capital in 8 minutes Out of the city We chose this place to eat this time It seems… Could it be too far 1 minute remaining Picked at random Is it that no one showed up? All of them are people? Previously we went to A-Si’s eel rice A-Si is right inside the old town district A Si is fine with either There are two A Sis This time I’ll choose one What are you looking at here? Selected to the mountains Old village Here in front? I don’t know I see there is parking About two hundred meters further it looks like there are some words written A few words written — yes There is a farm here In front Just like this, walking through the streets and alleys Hezao Farm Here, here Lots of cars Some 粵 A are here Eating here Some are local cars, some are Guangzhou cars Right here Hezao Farm The one with the fan on Firewood chicken rice But it’s very tasty Here, right here, customers come like clouds Found a seat — this place is secluded enough On the mountain That kind of farm bamboo shed The room has air conditioning The three of us sat in the hall Eating eel rice, is it? In Taishan, how much rice do they use per eel when making eel rice? One catty of rice, one catty of yellow eel Come take a look Salted egg yolk char siu Bamboo-shoot and mutton casserole Steamed young duck with preserved mustard greens There are many things The farmhouse is exactly where these are eaten Steamed chicken with Fist-winged hairy peach White-cut chicken Steamed loofah Sweet-and-sour style egg with five-seasoning garnish Glass noodles with shrimp This spicy stir-fried Taishan cauliflower is actually very tasty One dish per person What would you like to order? We changed seats and entered the room The room is good The room has air conditioning There’s still air conditioning on. There are also soft drinks. Very comfortable Let’s order a few dishes Four dishes Eel rice definitely shouldn’t be expensive I thought it was very expensive At least seventy or eighty yuan They only charged just over fifty yuan Then two squabs Fifty yuan for two Forty-three yuan — seems to be chenpi ribs Also one vegetable dish, one Coke, two hundred yuan Plus the tea charge, so you won’t need to order rice later Two hundred dollars is fine Here, you drink first Found the food My wife is still talking about me when I come by myself It’s hard to order in the village And also lazy The wife and daughter come They go to different places to look around Different perspectives The claypot rice I ate last time was delicious Really tasty — a whole pot So delicious I had to pack some to take away Claypot rice isn’t as good when packed to go Correction: In Taishan it’s not called claypot rice, it’s called yellow eel rice Also, if everyone comes to Taishan Don’t do anything unless you are not eating yellow eel rice Otherwise, as soon as you sit down, order the rice first Because cooking rice takes time Take your time with the others — there’s no rush Remember this You can head back to Guangzhou from here and take your time enjoying it If you explore a bit more deeply, even if I leave at four Even extremely, at five it’s still possible And you can go much deeper If going to Zhanjiang, now it’s already time to rush back Last time going to Hainan Island I was always driving Here we walk a stretch, stop and take a look — it’s very nice There we walk a stretch and stop again If we didn’t have space here just now It’s actually not a hassle to go elsewhere again The hotel is a seven-minute drive from here At least you can walk around the area One museum wasn’t enough — we went to another and saw it there. If you drive too far, you’ll be driving the whole time. Unless you have a lot of time Here are the salt-baked squab On the claypot This salt-baked squab is excellent 49 yuan for two Smells great—cooked like this Super tasty Does it need to cool down a bit? Turn it over a bit It’s still heating underneath I’ve never seen squab cooked like this before We need to wait a bit If you are in Taishan or Guangzhou you can come over My wife is basically very satisfied with this trip There were no culinary letdowns Seafood Roast goose Farmhouse Even their prices are comparatively advantageous The cost-performance ratio is very high Try this one Dim sum and tea snacks are fine too It’s like this Not those deep-fried ones from Zhongshan These have a kind of oil-sealed surface Cooked in a claypot Compared to the fried kind, what is this flavor? She picks up two pieces at once—I see that She’s biting it Dry and fragrant Delicious It’s hung to dry like Zhongshan squab, draining the water Put it back into the claypot The way it feels when you eat it It’s like the braised squab inside the claypot There are some seasonings on top Very tender The meat is also very tender Some unscrupulous vendors use baby chicks to make squab These places — restaurants wouldn’t do that Delicious It’s a different flavor profile for eating squab. The meat is also very tender. The squab doesn’t have any gamey odor The wife asked her daughter if she had fun this time The beach isn’t the kind you think The beach is where I have the most fun The beach is actually nice I don’t want to go into the water I did play in the water It’s chenpi ribs On top is powdered chenpi; underneath are fried spare ribs Restaurants in Xinhui are expensive Back to that beach I swam at the beach The bathing area was all fairly clean But it’s impossible like in a five-star hotel Paid 7 yuan to take a bath To rinse off — actually at that time I didn’t bring a towel to dry myself After rinsing, come out and wipe off in the parking lot Actually it’s all pretty good, very comfortable It’s just that we were in a hurry We left late again But it was very sunny there, almost no trees The beach also had almost no trees Braised napa cabbage with added taro All are local delicacies here Very satisfied with this trip You don’t have to go to those five-star hotels Five-star hotels have their own advantages And that hotel has been renovated; I’ve already been through one round of the pandemic It looks kind of mushy But I’m very satisfied this time It’s a little spicy — I can taste it in the squab portion Very dry and fragrant There’s sauce inside Try this one The lady said it was very good Take a piece of bone and try it And there’s also this This small bowl cake dessert Free gift Why we chose this place Actually, nothing had been decided when we left the hotel Because everything was spontaneous Before coming to this place We thought about going to those popular influencer restaurants But first, we’ve been there before And secondly, opinions are all over the place After considering it, might as well look for somewhere a bit more quirky But not too far And Xinghua is too far Fourth Brother, I’ve been there They’re all nice, but I’ve been to them more than once That place is in the city center This is just a little bit outside the city Only a few kilometers A seven-minute drive This bone is very tasty There is meat on it And it’s not very dry — not fried until it’s like kindling Some of the fatty bits were fried until they were a little charred and crispy With that aged tangerine peel powder on top — delicious Also, last night we were at the hotel by a lake So tired. What lake is that? I feel like I’ve been there before Of course we have to try the broth It’s not really broth, there’s hardly any soup Stewed napa cabbage — that’s how it’s done And also taro, big taro We already saw those taro this morning Now there’s taro to eat Baby napa cabbage What else Clam meat, a lot The main character has arrived This is rice. This is scorched rice. Serve them separately like this Every household has a different way of making it They separated us The method is very special Every family has a different way of making it It’s more than just one jin Plenty of filling — scoop down and it’s all eel Just this one bowl of soup So many yellow eels Now isn’t the best time for clams But it also has some flavor It brings some freshness Because it’s not eaten to fill you up — the Huangsha clams are for the flavor Try the rice It tastes of cilantro The rice is very dry Those eels have been seasoned. This is how Taishan eels are torn open. You can taste a slight hint of pepper Firewood Claypot Rice Very satisfied Delicious — an excellent claypot rice Not expensive In many places it’s over seventy yuan Yesterday nobody ordered claypot rice Thinking about coming back here to eat the eel rice And there were seafood yesterday Everyone should take the chance to drive back and hang out Viewers in Hong Kong and Macau Especially Macau is very convenient. We saw many Macau cars on the road Many that we haven’t seen in Hong Kong yet A little bit of trouble coming from Hong Kong Because we have to take the Shenzhen–Zhongshan Link Otherwise we would have to go through Guangzhou Shen-zhong Link Actually, no Hong Kong-licensed cars travel through Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge and once they pass it they are already in Zhuhai It’s very quick to go from Zhuhai to here — actually it’s doable Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge Actually, cars from Hong Kong reach Zhuhai faster than coming up to Guangzhou It’s very quick to come here from Zhuhai You don’t need to go to Shuiwei Village to eat this eel rice — it’s completely different This grain isn’t sticky and not greasy at all The best pairing with this Of all the eel rice we’ve eaten so many times, this has the best value for money The very best this time is 55 yuan Not oily, dry and crisp There is a small amount of cilantro inside Also add this Actually I don’t really like this But they’ve made it look so beautiful, there’s no reason not to try it All delicious Time to pay. We’re too late — it’s already two o’clock They’re about to close up for the day 197 yuan and they even pack it to take away Very attractive/beautiful If there’s leftovers, you can eat them again tonight With so many, which one do you think is the best? Eel Rice She ignored me Chenpi ribs? She likes eating squab the most This daughter says it’s tasty Isn’t it the kind that’s sticky and tough? I think it was just now when I saw her eat It was sticking like that Very indecent It can come off — I thought it was stuck like that This is also very tasty Also very tasty So delicious This meal was really delicious Great value for money Paid just over 180 yuan So much stuff 198 yuan bill But actually the soda was insisted on — doesn’t matter Also need to pack soft drinks And there are desserts too Those were given for free Soda costs money The minimum charge is 199 yuan Need one room plus soda 198 yuan We’re heading to their Wanda Plaza now Xingxing Shopping Mall We’re back here again Wanda Plaza Charge up while we’re at it Xingxing Mall has a supercharger Let’s talk about it after we go in Too many shopping malls in Guangzhou All are queuing up This huge Wanda To Wanda Plaza Charge whenever there’s power Many charging stations There are all kinds of signs A short rest before getting on the expressway Hiring — doesn’t say how much pay They’re all types of jobs in the mall Wanda Plaza is famously big — a “big” plaza We need to find where the coffee shop is located Today is Saturday Many children are on holiday now; every day feels like Saturday This is selling bread Grand Opening Children are happy There’s also a fruit shop Fruit seller This is the agent The shops are all very tidy, not those quirky/odd ones Like these, the three-leaf clovers and various others are all up front The car takes twenty-five minutes to fully charge All very fast Actually it’s fine either way if you don’t charge it Of course charging it is more secure My wife said this so we won’t even dare turn on the air conditioning There is a Piazza This side sells snacks They should be holding an event up ahead Set up the venue Wanda Plaza is always bustling Wanda Plaza is very popular in second- and third-tier cities Many times when we arrive at a place we ask How far is Wanda Plaza from here And there’s one more — everyone guess what this one is Here comes the big elephant, beneath the big elephant’s feet Here is an elephant trunk Big elephant They’re preparing… Qixi It’s almost Qixi There should be some activities What are they singing here? Cantonese opera Performing up above Italian restaurant Meal for two Only 168 yuan So much food That’s ridiculous — they want to buy the bread Because the daughter knows how to make it She wants to know how much it can be sold for after it’s made Decide how much to charge for your own bread Cha chaan teng Hong Kong–style cha chaan teng 56 yuan Tomato sauce pork chop rice 26 yuan 100% real beef steak 32 yuan per serving Durian flesh pizza 25 yuan—not expensive This is what it looks like inside Hong Kong–style cha chaan teng There are already a lot of people. It’s almost three o’clock now. Are there any busy shopping malls in Shenzhen? No And in Taicheng, Taishan there are already several large shopping malls Shangda Chang and those are also very busy The foot traffic here is actually pretty decent Shops are also possible, like these And there’s this There is a child playing There’s also a Mexican restaurant Taishan is different; there are Mexican restaurants too Here it’s a fusion of Hong Kong-style and Mexican cuisine What do Mexican meals like? Taco They have pickled cabbage fish This… this is very fusion-like We also see our green coffee shop Right ahead — go buy something to drink There’s a carnival here Playing with the kids But there’s music, can’t use the microphone Spent over seventy dollars on three cups All of them are the largest Matcha latte Iced coffee Sparkling Americano Seems like a great deal Buy all the drinks — one cup per person Matcha Latte She likes matcha The car has already charged to 95% Do not linger A Yellow Rainstorm Warning has already been issued here Not only that, there will be traffic soon. It’ll take more than two hours to get back.

Taishanese people were pioneers among early Chinese immigrants to the United States, primarily hailing from the Sze Yup region of Guangdong province. Beginning with the California Gold Rush in the mid-19th century, they arrived in large numbers, becoming a major labor force in the construction of the Transcontinental Railroad, as well as in mining and agriculture. The Taishanese dialect was once the lingua franca of American Chinatowns. Despite their significant contributions to the nation’s development, they endured long-term, systemic racial discrimination, epitomized by the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, which severely restricted Chinese immigration and denied them basic rights. Nevertheless, with unwavering resilience, the Taishanese people established strong communities in a foreign land, supporting each other through clan and family associations. The structure of Chinese immigration changed after World War II, especially with the passage of the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965. However, Taishanese immigrants and their descendants continue to achieve prominence in fields such as politics, business, and culture, making an indelible contribution to America’s multicultural society. Their history is a central chapter in the story of Chinese American perseverance and success.

Taishan Eel Rice is a highly representative and traditional delicacy from Taishan, Guangdong, featuring fresh, meaty local eels and high-quality long-grain rice as its primary ingredients. The preparation method is unique: the eel is deboned live and sliced or shredded, then marinated with seasonings like shredded ginger, minced garlic, scallions, soy sauce, and oyster sauce to infuse it with flavor. Next, the rice is washed and placed in a traditional clay pot to cook until semi-done. The marinated eel is then spread over the surface of the rice, and the pot is left to simmer over low heat. During this process, the rice fully absorbs the savory juices of the eel and the complex aroma of the marinade, while the eel meat remains tender and smooth. Before serving, a drizzle of cooked oil and soy sauce is often added, along with a sprinkle of chopped scallions or cilantro. When the lid is lifted, a fragrant steam erupts. The resulting dish boasts distinct, golden-colored grains of rice perfectly fused with the flavor of the eel, offering a rich and savory taste. It is a classic dish for banquets and family gatherings in Taishan and a nostalgic taste of home for a great many overseas Taishanese people.
