Mochiidono Center Shopping Street (もちいどのセンター街 / 餅飯殿町センター街) in Nara, Japan, is one of the city’s oldest commercial arcades, located just south of Kintetsu Nara Station and adjacent to the historic Naramachi district. Stretching about 250 meters, it’s lined with roughly 100 independently run shops offering local foods, crafts, clothing, and household goods. The street’s name traces back over 1,100 years to a legend involving rice cakes (mochi) and a giant serpent.
