【 旅ラン | 茨城県水戸市 】真夏の早朝、水戸城から千波湖までの6kmの観光ランニングコース
The Tokugawa Gosanke (Three Houses of the Tokugawa Family). Lord Mitsukuni Mito. A historic city. A midsummer early morning run. YOKO’s travel run. Mito City, Ibaraki Prefecture . This is Yoko. Today, I’m in Mito City, Ibaraki Prefecture. I’m currently in Minamimachi 2-chome, Mito City. I think this is the starting point of the Mito Man’yū Marathon. Mito City is my hometown. Today, I’ll run from Minamimachi 2-chome to the Art Museum, then run around Mito Station. This area is the shopping district north of Mito Station. Today’s course will start from Mito Station, go around the ruins of Mito Castle, and then go around Senba Lake, a total of about 6km. Art Museum Mito. A complex cultural facility for contemporary art, consisting of an art museum, concert hall, and theater. The symbolic tower is 100 meters high, and the view from the observation deck 86 meters above ground is spectacular. Due to its striking titanium panel exterior, it apparently did not require flashing lights under aviation law until 2020. Looking for a photo spot. I arrived in front of the Art Museum. There’s a 100-meter tower. From here, I’ll head toward Mito Station. Mito Second High School. This is my alma mater. The building has probably been replaced. This is the Sannomaru Government Building. I think this is the finish line of the Mito Man’yū Marathon. It used to be the Ibaraki Prefectural Office, but now I think it’s a joint government building. Mito City Low District Water Tower. Built when Mito City established its modern water supply system. It operated from 1932 to 2000. It’s now a nationally registered tangible cultural property. Kodokan Kashima Shrine. It was separated from Kashima Jingu, the first shrine in Hitachi, in 1857. The shrine building was destroyed in an air raid in 1945, but was rebuilt in 1974 using part of the old hall of Ise Jingu. Kodokan. A domain school established in the late Edo period in the Mito Domain of Hitachi Province, Japan. Built within the Sannomaru of Mito Castle by Tokugawa Nariaki, the 9th lord of the Mito Domain. It was large for a domain school at the time, suggesting the Mito domain’s emphasis on education. Otemon Gate. This gate, the main gate of Mito Castle and the most prestigious, was demolished during the Meiji period but rebuilt in 2020. Ninomaru Site. During the Edo period, it housed the castle lord’s residence, a palace serving as the government office, and a three-story turret, which essentially served as the castle tower. The three-story turret was destroyed in the Mito air raid of 1945. Currently, Ibaraki University Elementary School and Mito Third High School stand here. Sugiyama Gate. This gate, originally located at the north entrance of Ninomaru, was restored in 2015. Honmaru Site. During the Edo period, government functions were concentrated in Ninomaru and school functions in Sannomaru. In contrast, Honmaru was primarily used as a warehouse. Honmaru’s role as the center of operations is believed to have begun even earlier, during the Muromachi period. Mito First High School currently stands here. Mito Castle Site. Currently, Mito First High School is located here. This gate is perhaps the only remaining historical site. This is the Yakuimon Gate of Mito Castle. Sakamachi Sakashita Gate. Like the Sugiyama Gate, it was restored in 2015. This is a statue of Mito Komon (Mito Mitsukuni). Mitsukuni was the lord of the Mito domain, but he is well-known to Japanese people for his role in period dramas. I’ll walk through Mito Station toward the south exit. Sakuragawa River. Along with the Nakagawa River, it is a river beloved by Mito residents. As its name suggests, its shores are lined with cherry trees. Senba Lake. The perimeter has been developed as a jogging course, with a circumference of approximately 3km. These are black swans. They don’t run away at all. When I lived in Mito, I thought black swans were found all over Japan. Many black swans could be seen at Senba Lake, but apparently their numbers have drastically decreased since the spread of avian influenza in 2017. On the left is Senba Lake, and on the right is the Sakuragawa River. A D51 steam locomotive. Mito City has borrowed it from JR (then Japan National Railways) and has been exhibiting it since 1971.
