終点の先にも、歩く理由はある。神奈川県大和市、中央林間の町を歩いた。小田急線と東急田園都市線が交わるこの地は、かつて林間都市として構想され、今では始発駅として知られる町になった。交差点のざわめきを離れると、屋根の途切れた商店街や、名前に味のある店が静かに並んでいる。古びた看板が時を重ね、道ばたには自動販売機で売られるラーメンや果物の氷菓が、不意に懐かしさを呼び起こす。街の奥には、令和に改装された伏見稲荷神社がきれいに整えられ、線路脇にひっそりと置かれた仏像は、供養の気配とともにこの街に沈む時間の層を教えてくれる。何かの終わりに見えて、じつは始まりのような駅。その周辺には、にぎわいよりも穏やかな記憶が広がっていた。駅前の利便性とは裏腹に、少しずつ色を重ねてきた日常が、歩く足音の向こうにそっと佇んでいる。
