Mousehole – One of the Prettiest Seaside Villages in England and Cornwall?
Welcome to Mousehole, a truly magical corner of Cornwall thatโs often referred to as one of England’s prettiest seaside villages. Join us on a captivating walk through its cobbled, winding streets and picturesque harbour. You’ll see exactly why this historic gem on the rugged western coast has charmed poets, artists, and travellers for centuries. Grab a cup of tea (or something stronger) and get ready to be transported to a place where history and breathtaking views come together in perfect harmony.
The story of Mousehole is one of both resilience and profound tradition. Its history stretches back to the 13th century, when its original name was Porthenys, or “port of the island.” It grew into a powerful commercial hub, fueled by the booming pilchard fishing trade. This prosperity, however, came to a catastrophic end in 1595 when the Spanish attacked, burning most of the village to the ground. Miraculously, one home survived, and today you can still see the house where local hero Jenkyn Keigwin made his final stand. The spirit of this community is a powerful one, and you can still see its depth in the village’s traditions. Every year on December 19th, the famous Mousehole Christmas lights are turned off as a tribute to the eight brave lifeboatmen who were tragically lost at sea in 1981 while attempting a rescue.
Itโs easy to see why this spot is so beloved. The heart of Mousehole is its harbour, where colourful fishing boats still bob on the shimmering water. The granite walls of the harbour, first built in 1392, stand as a testament to its enduring connection to the sea. From the harbour, you can see St. Clement’s Isle just offshore, a rocky outcrop with its own legends of chapels and hermits. As you explore, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time, wandering through a maze of narrow alleys and hidden nooks that reveal one pretty view after another.
But Mousehole isn’t just a place to admire from afar. It’s a living, breathing community with a thriving arts scene, independent galleries, and charming shops. You can visit The Ship Inn, a pub where the Welsh poet Dylan Thomas once held court, or learn about Dolly Pentreath, a local fishwife who is famously believed to be the last monoglot speaker of the Cornish language.
The village is also the setting for the much-loved childrenโs book The Mousehole Cat, a legend that has become synonymous with the village.
Mousehole is a great launching point for a true Cornish adventure. Whether you’re hiking the South West Coast Path, taking a boat trip to see the iconic Minack Theatre from the water, or simply sitting in the harbour soaking up the atmosphere, this pretty seaside village offers an experience that will stay with you long after you’ve left.

Cornwall is a stunning place. Been there in 2017 and also visited Mousehole. Love it. Thank you for taking us along ๐
So quaint. Will remember Mousehole every Dec 19th. It's my brother's anniversary too so always a bittersweet day/time. ๐
This was lovely! Thank you for sharing.
Lovely village. โค. Thank you for the tour. Hugs and blessings โค
Looking forward for Port Wenn ๐
The only village in Cornwall that has disappointed me. Don't get me wrong, it is absolutely beautiful and I would love to spend a few days there. I'm just disappointed it's not pronounced "Mouse Hole," which would be adorable. You are correct in assuming I am not British. ๐คฃ
A Memory Seekers Video on Friday? a bit of a surprise there.
A very cute village. I would have terribly mispronounced the town's name if you had not taught me better. Thanks.
โคโคโค for the almighty algorithm
STUNNING SEASIDE VIEWS! THANKS FOR SHARING. ๐๐ค๐ฆ๐๐ฟ๐๐ผ๐๐

What an adorable place. โค๏ธ
That is such a pretty place. Loved every second of that. The harbour is gorgeous. Thanks for taking me along. Please take care
Spent a week there in June! What a delightful village it is. Views stunning. Could see right across to St Michael's mount from our house โค
I like your coverage ๐
Goodness, some of the streets are a bit snug.
Beautiful ๐๐
Stunning scenery from Cornwall. Proffesionell filming as always.
I have the dual pleasure of having an ancestor from Mousehole & friends who live there. I have visited it twice from Australia ๐ฆ๐บ & would return in a heartbeat. One of my friends paints the most gorgeous scenes of Mousehole harbour from different viewpoints. My ambition is to buy one of her paintings & hang it above my bed.
Another interesting village name. Not sure what the residents do for parking. Quaint but not my choice…a bit too claustrophobic, yet thanks for the peep into Mousehole. ๐
Cornwall is a beautiful place to visit, but I do love this lovely place.
I always remember the tragic lifeboat loss.
Thank you for your lovely video.
