The Underrated Charm of Matsuyama

Matsuyama is a city rich in history, culture, and nature, yet it remains relatively unknown as a tourist destination. Dogo Onsen, one of Japan’s oldest hot springs, offers stunning architecture and a traditional atmosphere, but its nationwide recognition is still limited. Matsuyama Castle, one of the twelve original castles in Japan, boasts breathtaking views from its hilltop location, yet it doesn’t receive as much attention as Osaka Castle or Himeji Castle.

Additionally, while Matsuyama serves as the starting point of the Shimanami Kaido, a cycling paradise, it is not widely recognized among general tourists. Local delicacies such as tai-meshi (sea bream rice) and jakoten (fried fish cake) are delicious, yet they lack the fame of other regional specialties in Shikoku. With its rich history, beautiful landscapes, and fantastic cuisine, Matsuyama deserves far more recognition as a travel destination.
