夏の朝、滋賀県長浜市にある長浜港には早くも強い日差しが降り注ぐ。
ここ琵琶湖の北岸に位置する長浜港から竹生島を目指す束の間の船旅。
竹生島は、古来より信仰の対象となった島で神の棲む島とも云われる。
ここには、日本三大弁天のひとつ竹生島弁才天が鎮座する。
船は岸を離れ、湖風を肌に感じつつ、琵琶湖最大の深さを湛える北湖の湖上へ。
湿り気を帯びた風がデッキを吹き抜け、背後に遠ざかる長浜の町並みが陽炎に霞む頃、船先に緑濃い竹生島の姿がゆらりと浮かび上がる。
やがて島影は次第に大きく、迫力を増しながら迫ってくる。
岩肌を縫うように繁る深緑の森、そして湖上に迫り出す社殿と鳥居が、夏の強い日差しを受け輝き、神聖な気配を一層引き立てている。
約30分の船旅ながら、琵琶湖の聖域へ向かう高揚感が心に深く刻まれる。
琵琶湖に浮かぶ竹生島には、長い歴史と深い信仰を讃えた二つの聖地が並び立つ。
ひとつは、弁才天を本尊とする宝厳寺。
もうひとつは、神話の時代から続く古社、都久夫須麻神社。
宝厳寺と都久夫須麻神社は、明治以前までは一体の聖地だった。
神仏習合の原型が今に残り、神も仏も同じく敬う日本的な信仰の姿を色濃く示す。
この湖面に浮かぶ神秘の聖地は「日本の風景百選」にも選ばれている。
島全体が樹齢数百年の原生林に覆われた竹生島は、日本屈指の神聖な雰囲気が漂う湖上のパワースポットとしても広く知られる。
宝厳寺は、奈良時代の高僧行基によって724年に開かれたと伝えられている。
聖武天皇の勅願によって建立され、弁才天を本尊とした霊場として栄えてきた。
特に室町から江戸時代にかけては、湖上の守り神として商人や漁師、さらには戦国武将たちからも篤く信仰され、豊臣秀吉も深く帰依した。
都久夫須麻神社（つくぶすまじんじゃ）は、竹生島神社とも呼ばれ、公式にはこちらの呼称を用いている。
日本書紀や延喜式にも記されている格式高い古社で、創建は不詳だが、古代から竹生島が神の住む島とされていた由緒ある神社である。
主祭神は、市杵島姫命。
水の女神であり、仏教では弁才天と習合し、宝厳寺の信仰とも深く繋がっている。
まさに、神仏習合の象徴とも言える場所である。
竹生島巡りは、観光地を巡るだけでなく、日本人の精神文化の深層に触れる旅となる。

On a summer morning, strong sunlight already shines down on Nagahama Port in Nagahama City, Shiga Prefecture.
From Nagahama Port, located on the northern shore of Lake Biwa, we embark on a brief boat trip to Chikubu Island.
Chikubu Island has been an object of worship since ancient times and is said to be an island where gods dwell.
Here stands Chikubu Benzaiten, one of Japan’s three great Benzaiten deities.
The boat departs from the shore, feeling the lake breeze on its skin, and heads out onto the northern part of Lake Biwa, which boasts the deepest waters in the lake.
A moist breeze blows across the deck, and as the townscape of Nagahama fades into the haze of the sun, the lush green silhouette of Chikubu Island gradually comes into view at the bow of the boat.
Gradually, the island’s silhouette grows larger and more imposing as it approaches.
The deep green forest that winds through the rocky cliffs, along with the shrine and torii gate protruding into the lake, shimmer in the strong summer sunlight, enhancing the sacred atmosphere.
Though the boat ride lasts only about 30 minutes, the sense of anticipation as you head toward Lake Biwa’s sacred realm is deeply etched in your heart.
On Chikubu Island, floating on Lake Biwa, there are two sacred sites that celebrate its long history and deep faith.
One is Hogonji Temple, which enshrines Benzaiten as its principal deity.
The other is Tsukubusuma Shrine, an ancient shrine that has continued since mythological times.
Hōgon-ji Temple and Tsukubusuma Shrine were once a single sacred site before the Meiji era.
The prototype of Shinto-Buddhist syncretism remains to this day, vividly illustrating the Japanese tradition of revering both gods and Buddhas equally.
This mysterious sacred site floating on the lake surface has been selected as one of the “100 Scenic Views of Japan.”
Takashima Island, covered in primeval forests with trees hundreds of years old, is widely known as one of Japan’s most sacred and powerful spots on the lake.
Hōgen-ji Temple is said to have been founded in 724 by the high priest Gyōki of the Nara period.
It was established by imperial decree of Emperor Shōmu and flourished as a sacred site with Benzaiten as its principal deity.
Especially from the Muromachi to Edo periods, it was deeply revered as the guardian deity of the lake by merchants, fishermen, and even warlords of the Sengoku period, with Toyotomi Hideyoshi also deeply devoted to it.
Tsukubusuma Shrine, also known as Chikubushima Shrine, is officially referred to by the latter name.
It is a prestigious ancient shrine mentioned in the Nihon Shoki and Engi Shiki, though its founding date is unknown. It is a shrine with a long history, as Chikubushima Island has been regarded as an island inhabited by gods since ancient times.
The principal deity is Ichikishima Hime no Mikoto.
She is a goddess of water and is associated with Benzaiten in Buddhism, deeply connected to the faith of Hōgen-ji Temple.
It is truly a place that symbolizes the fusion of Shinto and Buddhism.
A tour of Chikubu Island is not just a visit to a tourist spot, but a journey that allows you to touch the depths of Japanese spiritual culture.
