ボツワナ、マウンの文化ツアーとボツワナのセルフドライブ旅行の感想
We did a cultural tour in Moan as well, which was very interesting. Uh it showed us a little bit of how things go there. Uh they’re very um proud of their appearance. They do a lot of work to clean their shoes, which is quite something in this dust, especially with all this dust around, I suppose. And their cars. a lot of car washes which was also um actually like set up from the co era because a lot of people started their own business and the car washes have grown into like the social point in in my own in any village I suppose and what they do there is they go and park their car have a car wash but at the car wash there’s a tuck shop you can get something to eat you can have a haircut you can shine your shoes. And there’s even a pool table outside in the dust under a tree where you can play some pool which is really nice and you can catch up with all the um daily things that are going on in town. So yeah, very good that. And then we had some basket weaving. We tried to do that. Obviously we were no good. These guys are very very clever how they do all the weaving and stuff. Um it was quite interesting and they do a lot of help for the young ladies in particular to help them get some work, help them get some training, uh a bit of an education, a bit of support as well which is very nice and in that way the tourism industry helps everyone on every level. Uh the other one was the markets. There’s a lot of market stores out there which are kind of informal. uh the government gives you a um permit but they don’t really uh pay taxes as such as far as I understood it. So it’s kind of uh legal but it’s informal if that makes sense. If I’m wrong correct me down below as well. And after that we had a little lunch as well which is quite nice. Uh a bit of pup which was good which is kind of like a maze meal. um a stiff porridge and they had some um meat. I think it was chicken and a bit of gravy and some uh pumpkin. And it’s basically just a little taster of what they would normally eat. And what they also do is um roast or boil their um corn, little corn kernels, and then they make they dry that out and that becomes like a snack that you can take on the road like as if it was a bag of peanuts or something, which is also quite cool because um I think agriculture around here is quite difficult. Uh it’s very dry around here. There’s another drought this year which has been really tough on everyone. Uh water is a big thing especially not only for the animals but also in the villages. Um as I said already the blue rock at Chubby uh at camp was totally um devoid of any water this morning. So it made for an interesting session I would think. So yeah there’s a there’s a hillside. We’ve got a little bit of elevation. Um, Batswana is really flat. I don’t know if you know this already, but if you’ve lived in Holland, it’s the flattest country on the planet, apparently. But I think Botswana trumps that because it’s 10 times bigger. So to see a hill out here is actually quite uh something special in some ways, man. Yeah, this sand, this perpetual sand, that’s unbelievable. And that’s why the Okabango is so special because most of the country is this kind of dry arid um semi- desert conditions and then you have the Okabango Delta. So yeah, actually I would think Botswana is maybe not even that uh much on the map internationally or as well known as uh Kenya for example or uh Namibia as a safari destination. But it’s actually offers a whole lot of uh everything in one in in in some ways which is quite cool. It’s very accessible. And here is the hillside. This is the zen of driving. That is so cool. Heat. Heat. Heat. Heat. [Music] some [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music]

Maun is the gateway to the Okavango Delta, and you certainly can’t avoid this town. Whether you’re on a guided safari or a self-drive adventure, Maun gives you plenty of places to rest your weary, traveller’s bones, stock up on supplies, or grab a tour by car, boat or plane! And there’s a lot more going on beneath the surface…
We’ve slept with the elephants, been serenaded by hippos, found the middle of nowhere and it is in the Kalahari and it is called Xaxa, discovered the rich and complex culture of this land, floated on the mighty Chobe river. Drove the smoothest road/track and it is on the salt flats, battled the fierce heat for three weeks 🥵, made fire, kept ourselves fed and watered, camped wild, spade and toilet paper. Enjoyed some Safari lodge comfort, found a waterfall in Zimbabwe, become elephant whisperers as they walked right through camp, fantastic sunsets, got stuck (only once), drove some challenging tracks. Discovered the joys of a good G&T and the simply perfect local beer, become experts at making camp, campfire musings and early mornings, spectacular sunrises, amazing, smiling, friendly people. We now know how many cows to get married, there is only one camp with grass in the whole country, a fridge only stays cold for two nights. Cows and goats in the road, lions roaring at night, the Milky Way, loud birds in the morning. Lucky, lucky game sightings, absolute silence, cheeky baboons, thunderstorms that rattle the windows and so much more that will come as we remember. But most of all camaraderie, laughs and an openness and willingness to explore the unknown.
Join us on our mission to discover the best of what Botswana has to offer. We spent three weeks in Botswana to try and uncover the diverse natural environments and the wealth of wildlife. Botswana has a huge amount to offer the self-drive enthousiast, from the dry heat of the Kalahari, through the Okavango Delta to the Salt Pans of Makgadigadi.
We spent a couple of days in Maun doing a cultural tour and a scenic helicopter flight, as well as a Mokoro trip in the Khwai concession. Vic Falls was an amazing bucket list visit as well as the obligatory sunset cruise from Chobe Safari Lodge. We slept with the elephants at Elephant Sands, but even more so at Nxai Pan. And Kubu Island really is as cool as everyone says it is!
We drove about 3400 kms, had an extremely hot time during the heatwave, bailed out of the Kalahari, learned about the local customs and culture and found a couple of cheetahs! The other Big Five were also ticked off with a lucky lion sighting and a leopard crossed our path. Khama Rhino Sanctuary is just off the charts with the lengths they (have to) go to to protect the rhinos.
The diversity is surprising and unexpected, from the dry and dusty CKGR to the wetlands of Khwai and the tranquility of the Chobe river.
We hope this will inspire and excite you to visit this fascinating, beautiful country!
