Baleal: A Tiny Island Full of Surprises | Portugal
In this video: July 20, 2025 – 2:30 pm Hi everyone! Portugal is not known for having
a large number of islands, especially compared to countries like Greece. But the few islands it has are
all very interesting and unique, including, in my opinion, the most
beautiful archipelago in the world! (which I’ll probably
visit and film in 2026) Today we are going to visit the
small island and village of Baleal, in the municipality of Peniche. Baleal is located about 85km (53 miles) north of Lisbon, and just 5km (3 mi) east
of the city of Peniche. There are two beaches
flanking the strip of sand… …that connects the Baleal
island to mainland Portugal: Praia do Baleal Sul (Baleal south beach), and Praia do Baleal Norte
(Baleal north beach). This means you can face the sea and
have your back to it at the same time! You can walk from one beach
to the other in two minutes, and choose the best one based
on the wind, waves, or mood. Though they’re right next
to each other geographically, wind and wave conditions often
vary a lot between the two beaches. On the south side, the sea is calmer and the wind is gentler, especially in summer. Although it is called an island, technically we can also
call Baleal a peninsula. Baleal isn’t a separate
administrative entity… …with its own official population, but I’d guess it has around 200 inhabitants. Maybe even fewer, since most properties are second
homes or used for tourism. Once a quiet fishing hamlet, Baleal has become known
for its natural beauty… …and world-class surf conditions. Geographically, Baleal
occupies a dramatic setting. The city of Peniche. The village sits on a small island… …that is connected to the mainland
by a narrow strip of sand, known as a tombolo. This natural sand bridge transforms
Baleal into a peninsula during low tide, while giving it the appearance
of an island at high tide. The origin of the name “Baleal”… …derives from the Portuguese
word for whale: “baleia”, because of the village’s
long connection to whaling. The name comes from a time
when whale hunting was common… …and the sea was both
a threat and a lifeline. In the 20th century, Baleal began to evolve from
a traditional fishing village… …into a recreational coastal community. While fishing remains a
small part of local life, tourism has become the
economic backbone of the area. Chapel of Saint Estevão, possibly
dating from the 16th or 17th century. In 1808, during the French
invasions of Portugal… …a small fort was built on the island. However, a few decades
later it was already in ruins, and today almost nothing
remains of the fort. The Berlengas Islands, a group of
small islands visible from the coast. Surfing culture has significantly shaped
Baleal’s identity in recent decades. Today, Baleal is internationally recognized… …for its consistent waves
and surf-friendly beaches. Baleal’s beaches are not only
scenic, but also versatile, offering conditions suitable for
both beginners and seasoned surfers. Baleal now hosts several surf
camps, schools, and competitions. The laid-back atmosphere, paired with reliable waves
and stunning coastal views, draws visitors from across Europe and beyond. Despite this growing attention, Baleal has managed to retain
much of its small-village charm. The local architecture is
modest and largely residential, with a few small hotels, guesthouses, and restaurants that cater
to both locals and tourists. Seasonal changes mark the rhythm of life: quiet and peaceful in winter, lively and buzzing in the summer months. Inland towns in central Portugal can be
scorching in summer or cold in winter, but Baleal’s oceanic influence
keeps things moderate year-round. Summer daytime temperatures in Baleal
typically range from 22–26°C (72–79°F), while Lisbon can reach 35–40°C (95–104°F) on the same day. Even at its warmest, the
Atlantic stays chilly, which is why surfers wear wetsuits year-round. For those looking to escape
the scorching summer heat, Baleal is a great option, just keep in mind that mornings

Acho que não te contei, mas consegui caminhar até lá, partindo de Peniche, em março. Estava tão determinada a visitar… Caminhei todo o trajeto ao longo das praias de Peniche de Cima e Praia da Gambôa, contornando Baleal e voltando pela Avenida da Praia e Avenida Monsenhor Bastos. Os meus pés estavam a doer quando voltei, mas valeu a pena.
Sabes como adoro a região.

Baleal, em Peniche (Portugal), não é tecnicamente uma ilha, mas sim uma tômbolo — uma pequena península ligada ao continente por uma estreita faixa de areia (ou istmo).

Baleal: Onde o Mar Abraça a Memória
Há lugares que parecem desenhados à mão por quem conhece bem o silêncio e o
vento. A Ilha do Baleal, na costa oeste de Portugal, é um desses lugares — uma ilha-
aldeia que não se limita a existir: ela respira, ela conta histórias.
A poucos minutos de Peniche, o Baleal surge como uma aparição serena, ligada ao
continente por uma estreita faixa de areia que o mar ora respeita, ora desafia. É
preciso atravessar esse caminho com olhos abertos e alma leve, porque ali começa
outra geografia — não apenas de terra, mas de tempo.
Outrora terra de caça à baleia, o Baleal guarda no nome a memória de gigantes do
oceano, e nas pedras, os ecos de homens que enfrentavam o mar com coragem
e superstição. Hoje, o que se caça ali é a paz. E o que se encontra é um refúgio
tranquilo, onde o som das ondas substitui o ruído do mundo.
As casas brancas, de traço simples e telhados baixos, parecem sussurrar segredos
antigos. Há pescadores que ainda conhecem o mar pelo cheiro, e há surfistas que o
desafiam com pranchas e poesia. Porque o Baleal é também templo de ondas
perfeitas, onde o Atlântico se exibe com orgulho e fúria, atraindo amantes do surf
de todos os cantos do planeta.
Mas não é só a adrenalina que vive ali. É o ritmo lento das manhãs, o café tomado
com vista para o infinito, os passeios entre rochas esculpidas pelo tempo, e o pôr
do sol que pinta o céu com cores que não cabem em nenhuma paleta.
No Baleal, o mar não é apenas cenário — é personagem. Ele conversa com quem
sabe escutar, e abraça quem se deixa ficar. E a ilha, com sua forma peculiar e alma
antiga, ensina que há lugares onde a terra termina, mas a vida começa.
