Hotel Kawakyu (2025) Hello! This is Hozuki. This travelogue is about a trip to Wakayama Prefecture (1 night, 2 days)! This time, I would like to stay at Hotel Kawakyu again in Shirahama Town, Wakayama Prefecture! Shirahama Town, Wakayama Prefecture, where Hotel Kawakyu is located, is about 2 hours by car from Osaka. By train, it takes about 3 hours from Osaka to the inn, and there is a free shuttle from the nearest JR Shirahama Station! (No reservation required, shuttle bus) Hotel Kawakyu was an amazing castle with a total construction cost of 40 billion yen! There is a gorgeous entrance and a museum, and the hot spring is the ROYAL SPA with an ocean view, and you can enjoy Shirahama hot springs in the eternal forest where you can feel nature! And above all, the super gorgeous king’s buffet! Freshly made sushi by a craftsman, freshly grilled steak, cheese risotto made in cheese, and spiny lobster shabu-shabu! Both Japanese and Western food are high-level and delicious! There are plenty of dishes to finish off the day, such as black curry and wild boar rice! There are also plenty of desserts, so you will be very satisfied! The King Buffet continues for breakfast! It’s very delicious! The price starts from just under 19,000 yen per person depending on the date and plan! (As of April 2025) This time, I would like to tell you about the charms of Hotel Kawakyu and Shirahama Town, Wakayama Prefecture. Thank you for your continued support! This time, we will start from the Hanwa Expressway, and the weather this time is a little cloudy. First, I will introduce the tourist spots we visited on the second day! We got off at Gobo Minami Interchange and headed for Shirasaki Beach! We saw it on Matsuko’s Unknown World and wanted to go there! We arrived at the roadside station Shirasaki Marine Park, which we wanted to visit! It’s amazing! It’s a park where you can see a landscape surrounded by pure white limestone! The sea is also very beautiful! It’s wonderful! The sea is very clear! Wakayama is great! Now, let’s move on to the limestone area, which is the main topic! The pure white limestone is amazing! It’s very beautiful! There is an observation deck at the top of the stairs! Let’s go. It was already beautiful even while we were climbing. It is also called the Aegean Sea of Japan! From the observation deck, you can see blue sea! And white rocks! Natural scenery is really beautiful! This limestone is made of coral and shells, and it was a view that made me feel like I was not in Japan even though I was in Japan! Day 1 again! To Shirahama! I got off at the Kamitonda exit and stopped by Toretore Market as usual! I found a limited edition Nagisa Beer! It’s Soramai (¥440)! After getting a beer, I headed to the inn in high spirits! From Toretore Market, I could see the castle in about 7 minutes! Kawakyu is amazing! (Total construction cost 40 billion yen) It’s a castle! The flying rabbit is cute. I came here last year, but it’s always amazing! Now, I’m heading to check in. Each tile here is also hand-pasted by a craftsman. Each pillar here is said to cost 100 million yen! (There are 24 of them) And the ceiling is gold leaf with a surface area of 1056.97㎡, a Guinness World Record! It’s not just the appearance, but also a really gorgeous entrance ! This spiral staircase is also wonderful! And the room is called “Kinsei”! It’s auspicious! Lol There is a Steinway piano placed casually… And you can enjoy a welcome drink from 14:00 to 16:30! There is a window seat available! Yay. Drinks are Wakayama-like, and you can drink plum wine and Scotch whiskey! (They also have coffee, etc.) My partner and I chose… whiskey! (We both like highballs) I’m grateful that the carbonated drinks are chilled! I’ll have two highballs, please lol There are also cookies and marshmallows as snacks, as well as persimmon seeds (individually wrapped) and chocolate! There is also water and Kishu plum juice. Since we’re here, let’s have some plum juice! So we’ll drink from the middle of the day! Lol Well then… Cheers! Highball is delicious! Drinking during the day is always nice. The Kishu plum juice was refreshing and delicious! Now, let’s head to our room. The flowers are beautiful. The elevator is also this gorgeous. This place is amazing. You can see the entrance from the elevator! This time, our room was on the 5th floor! We walked through a lovely carpeted corridor to our room. Our room! I see, it’s “Kinsei”. The key is the old-fashioned type. Let’s go in. Oh, it’s a little more compact than the last room! It’s the cheapest room in the Southern Suite , but it’s spacious! Lol The TV is really big and hanging on the wall! (You can also watch Youtube) It’s a double room, but there are a lot of sofas! There was also a special water bottle made by Kawakyu. There’s a desk too! Convenient. There’s another desk opposite the desk…? ? And the stylish bedroom with a white base. On the bed is a yukata with Kawakyu’s mark. There are switches on the bed board. And in the corner of the room is a Panasonic humidifier and air purifier. The view from the room is a rabbit and a view of Shirahama! Next, we’ll introduce the bathroom. It looks like a bathroom, but it’s actually just a waiting room! The hair dryer is from Panasonic! Behind the waiting room is a refrigerator. It’s huge. On top of the refrigerator are cups and the famous Kagero sweets. Thank you. And this is the bathroom! Gorgeous! It’s very convenient to have two sinks! The cosmetics are from Dr. Ci:Labo. There are also plenty of amenities! It’s nice that there are towel hangers! And the bath is also very spacious! *I didn’t use it because I went to the hot spring. Finally, the toilet. There’s a sink in the toilet! Amazing! The toilet itself is tankless! After taking a short break in the room, we set off to explore the building and take a bath! There is a hot spring and an art museum on the second floor, so we headed there! First of all, there are many art pieces, also known as the Kawakyu Museum! Works by super famous artists are on display! There are works by Spanish painter Salvador Dali and Japanese artist Yokoyama Taikan! And the entrance hall overlooking the second floor is very nice! You can see the beautiful pillars and tiles well from here! Nakao Jun’s Japanese paintings are displayed in each room! The Arita ware display matches the Japanese-style atmosphere perfectly! This work was created specifically for this room! I thought the lighting here was also nice, and it has Kawakyu’s coat of arms on it. Amazing. There are also other works with the theme of “mother and child” and a room called “night light” that can be viewed using lights. (Seasonal exhibition) This one had a sense of exploration, and I enjoyed the wonderful works! This room has a ceiling painting with the theme of “love, freedom, and peace”! The red color is impressive. The “Sphinx” lounge is also on the second floor. An exhibition with the theme of “the presence of others” (Seasonal exhibition) The birds are cute. And this is the former bath area! It feels strange to see the works on display! And the lounge seen from the second floor is also very nice. It is called “Musee” and has a panoramic view of Tanabe Bay! Now let’s go down the spiral staircase to the first floor. The spiral staircase here is also gorgeous! It’s fun to go down. And on the first floor, you can touch Kawakyu’s tiles (laughs ) Kawakyu goods are also available for purchase! The entrance hall seen from the first floor is a sight to behold! Kawakyu-san’s old uniform on display. Very unique! Kawakyu’s model. This is definitely a castle! And there is also the hot spring salon “Yukyu no Mori” on the first floor! At this time it was the women’s bath! (I will introduce it later) And there is also a SPA near the large bath, and Kawakyu’s shop next to the lounge. The shop’s name is Hakuto (White Rabbit). So cute. They have a wide variety of Wakayama specialties, including Wakayama’s famous sweets Kagero, yuzu monaka, mandarin juice, mandarin vinegar, and regular sweets! Oh, there is also a Kishu specialty corner here! You can buy cold Nagisa beer! They also sell fashionable clothes, Kawakyu’s original plum wine, potato and barley shochu, and their specialty curry and dressing! Return to the second floor again and go to the hot spring! Enjoy the hot spring salon, ROYAL SPA! The hot spring salon ROYAL SPA is a hot spring with an ocean view! You can see Tanabe Bay spreading out before your eyes from the bath, and even while lying on a chaise lounge! There is also a “Mansion Living Spa” where you can enjoy a reclining bath, silk bath, sauna and cold water bath while watching the fireplace! The reclining bath is very comfortable, and you can fully enjoy Shirahama Onsen and spend an elegant time. After the bath, you can enjoy ice cream and drinks in the open salon integrated with the terrace! The atmosphere is completely different in the “Yukyu no Mori” on the first floor, and you can enjoy a bath while looking at the hermit paintings in the Koya cypress indoor bath! The walls are lit up with soft indirect lighting, and you can enjoy the sodium chloride and bicarbonate springs. There is also the Yukyu no Mori open-air bath, where you can enjoy both nature and the hot water of Shirahama. You can hear the sound of the waves and the birds, and it was a very healing space! After a short rest in the room, it’s time for the long-awaited dinner! Woosh! It’s been a while since I’ve had a king’s buffet! I’m really looking forward to it! When the time comes, you will be shown to your seat! It’s already ready! Wow! There’s some good meat! I can’t resist it! Luckily, I was seated by the window. Yay! I grabbed a tray and a plate and headed out! First, salad. Cherry tomatoes, potato salad, etc. This is the appetizer corner. First, I’ll have scallops with Lecuy! I’ll have it with French dressing. Next, caprese with prosciutto and strawberries. A cocktail of small shrimp and spring vegetables is also good! I’ll also have cold roast beef! The presence of the tuna head! A sashimi platter of sea bream and tuna. Let’s eat! Don’t forget the soy sauce. This is Kishu thin tofu. Oh, I’ll order some sushi before it gets crowded! You can choose from Kushimoto tuna, amberjack, salmon, shrimp, and egg! The chef will make it with skillful hands! I ordered tuna, amberjack, and two salmon pieces! Thank you! It’s bamboo shoots with Udo miso. Let’s eat! Next, today’s stew (boiled dish) is a stew of beef tendon and small potatoes. Looks delicious. I also have smoked duck and avocado salad! Looks delicious! I’ll only have the tomato salad! Lol Next time I’ll try domestic beef loin steak! Thank you! Amazing meat. I tried a Japanese-style grated daikon sauce! I’ll have garlic chips and green beans! My partner’s is like this. It looks delicious with a Japanese style main! Hozuki’s choice – Enjoy the first round with seafood as the main focus – First, domestic beef steak! It’s already delicious! Lol Roast beef with shrimp and spring vegetable cocktail, scallop le cuit, ham and strawberry caprese. Wakayama’s specialties, sea bream and tuna, are also great! And sushi! Salmon, amberjack, and tuna! Then smoked salmon, tripe cassoulet, grilled chicken, avocado salad, steamed spring vegetables and shellfish, and cherry tomatoes. Domestic beef stew, baby scallops, and bamboo shoots with butterbur miso! I’d like to enjoy it like this! Veggie first, tomato. It’s shiny and delicious! First, steak! The meat is so soft! The garlic is irresistible! The smoked salmon is so good! Even the bear would be happy with this! Domestic beef stewed in tomato! Cheese, meat, and tomato all in one! The bitterness of the butterbur miso goes well with the bamboo shoots! I love it! I ordered wine! lol Even though we were having a toast , it would be a bit awkward without alcohol with this dish… (Excuse Taro) Next was tripe and beef tendon stewed in tomato sauce! So delicious! Yes, that’s what wine is for… Red wine and tripe stew are the best! Scallops with garlic butter flavor (Burgundy style). Delicious! Smoked duck and avocado salad! The duck is a great accent! Sushi! The salmon is super shiny and has good fat! The melt-in-your-mouth salmon goes really well with the sushi rice! Next was skewered tuna! It was thick with a nice shine! It had a chewy texture and a strong flavor! Yummy! The grilled chicken was also delicious! It had the umami of vegetables! I like mussels. It made me want some white wine too lol Next was sea bream! This one was also firm and delicious! The cold roast beef was also delicious! It was cooked just right! The shrimp are plump and delicious! Oh, I really like this… the scallops are sweet too! I like that they’re semi-cooked (le cuy)! I love Caprese. It’s sweet and sour because it’s made with strawberries ! Kushimoto tuna! This is really good, so I recommend it ! The amberjack has a great texture and flavor! This is also delicious! Ah, Kawakyu’s buffet is amazing as always! Of course I’ll go for seconds! Oh, miso soup and pickles. The umeboshi plums look delicious! This one is rice cooked with wild boar and mountain vegetables! Next to it is white rice. Hmm. Next to it is black curry! I’ll eat it later! This one is Matsukaze-yaki broccoli! Let’s eat! I think I’ll also try the Kishu thin tofu next to it. Oh, dessert! It’s still almost untouched, so I’ll take a picture lol I’ll pause and introduce it to you! I’ll also have a really big honey-pickled pickled plum! My partner had dessert time a little early! The dessert and curry look delicious! Let’s eat next! Hozuki’s Choice – This is a lot of food before the final course… First, sushi! It was the same as the one I had just now! Lol I had the beautifully-looking bamboo shoots and pork belly baked in butterbur miso cream, some delicious things, pickled plums, stewed beef tendons, and I had the spiny lobster shabu-shabu and wild boar rice for a repeat! Nagisa Beer’s airport beer, Soramai! It’s a golden ale! Soramai is poured in… so… cheers ! Oh, so refreshing! It has a clear taste! I ate a lot today, so no snacks! Thank you for the meal! I’ll take care of my stomach with some Pilcru! (Teacup… lol) Phew, I drank and ate a lot today! That’s all for today. Good night! Good morning! Today’s weather is… nice! The rabbit is fine too! lol The large bath was replaced in the morning ! Let’s enjoy it! Then, after a short rest in the room, it’s time for the long-awaited breakfast! Woosh! I got off the train while looking at the beautiful interior, and the long-awaited king’s buffet breakfast! I was shown to my seat (reserved seat) and it was a window seat again! What luck! I took the tray and tableware and set off! First, I’ll have the smoked chicken marinade! Next, I’ll have cold cheese fondue (with vegetables) and pour cheese fondue sauce over it! As expected from Wakayama. I had bonito plums! There was also Kishu plum rice porridge and tea rice porridge. Soothing. The famous King’s Melon Juice! This is bound to be delicious! I had a mountain of it! Lol This is sukiyaki for breakfast! Let’s eat! Next is a seafood bowl! Salmon, salmon roe, squid and tuna! Looks delicious! Finally, I’ll drink the king’s melon juice again to feel like an aristocrat! Lol. Then I’ll go for a refill! (I forgot to take a picture of the plate) First, I’ll make an omelette! I put a lot of cheese in the ingredients! Such a skillful technique! Breakfast omelets are great, aren’t they?! They look so delicious when cooked! Thank you! I’ll have it simply with ketchup! Next, I’ll have rice… I’ll have the black curry that was delicious yesterday! Morning curry! I’ll try adding some spices. Hozuki’s Choice – the second turn is a hearty Western course – first, a freshly made omelette, tomato and basil pasta, German potatoes with warm vegetables, roast ham with lemon stewed vegetables. And then black curry with spices! So we’ll be enjoying the Western food! First, pasta! The tomato and basil are great! The German potatoes were also stolen lol Next, the roast ham! Thick and juicy! The lemon stewed vegetables are super refreshing! The warm vegetables with paysanne sauce are also delicious! The aroma of herbs! We cut the omelette! Yay! It’s super creamy! It’s delicious with cheese too! German potatoes are so good (I want a beer) and then black curry! A little spicy with spices! Good! Finally, we refresh it with mandarin orange vinegar, and the second round is also complete! Now let’s finish off! First, we have coffee jelly, followed by strawberry mille crepes and fruit punch! I also ate the replenished Wakayama punch! And then I had a seafood bowl (?!) to finish off the meal! Oh, I have to try the freshly made French toast too! I ate it with fresh cream and maple syrup! I even sprinkled some powdered sugar on it to make it look fancy! Lol Hozuki’s choice – this is my last meal at Hotel Kawakyu – fruit punch, coffee jelly, mille crepes, and Wakayama punch with mandarin juice! French toast with powdered sugar on top, and a seafood bowl to finish off the meal! (Why does that happen?) I’ll end the meal like this! The seafood bowls here are just too delicious! The squid and tuna are both super delicious!! And then I suddenly switched to the fruit punch. Delicious. I think I like the Wakayama punch better because it’s smoother! French toast is my dream breakfast! It’s creamy, sweet, and a calorie bomb, and it’s the best! (Gourmet) The mille crepes are also strawberry flavored! This is delicious! Finally, I finished off with coffee jelly for a more grown-up (?) feeling! We ate everything at Hotel Kawakyu! We were very satisfied! It was a very delicious breakfast! Thank you for the meal! Well, it’s time to leave! Hotel Kawakyu was a very gorgeous and delicious inn! The price was 18,924 yen per person including discounts!
