The Chinese call it Gaozhuang Xishuangjing, while Thais call it Gao Jom Sip Song Chiang, meaning “9 pagodas, 12 villages” in Tai Lue. in Tai Lue. So many names, I don’t even know what to call it. Seafood lovers, this is for you. “Small intestine”? “Lamb ribs nursery flavor?” “Pla Mok”? Thai grilled Plamok? Oysters Huge oysters! Looks like brains! The fun part of walking around here— is reading all the weird Thai signs. Makes me wonder—who translated these? “Net idol crush sherbet”? What does that even mean? They’re clearly trying to bring in a Thai vibe, to match the “Thailand-in-China” concept. Definitely caught the attention of Thai tourists like me. But not every stall has Thai. Only a few. And no, people here don’t speak Thai. So many stalls! What should I eat? Ooh, I want papaya salad! They’ve got somtam here! – Somtam! – Spicy? I told myself I’d eat from a stall with Thai words. Not exactly. This city already had Tai Lue people, who are actually related to Thai people So the government used that to boost local tourism. Like how Thailand has “Little Fuji” “Swiss of Thailand” “Guilin of Thailand”… that kind of thing. Maybe it’s a bit much though—Tai Lue people have their own script not Thai letters like this But it’s all just for fun. I made it to Menglè Cultural Scenic Area! the taxi driver helped buy the ticket So I got it for 100 yuan instead of 120! – Can I check if it’s a real ticket first? I was scared I got scammed. Not sure if I paid too much or not. They say normal price is 120 yuan, but this guy got it for us at 100. To be honest, I didn’t even know there was an entrance fee. Let’s go! This place is HUGE. First stop of the day: Menglè Temple Normal ticket is 120 yuan. But only 80 yuan for kids, seniors, and soldiers. As soon as we enter, greeted by a vast, open area There’s a giant peacock statue welcoming me On the right is the shuttle pickup to the temple on the hill On the left is the Water Splash building for water play How can it be this contrasting? They said admission is free, right? At the entrance to the Water Splash Hall, there are bathrooms, showers, lockers, and clothing shops So it’s obvious everyone inside is ready to get wet But I’m not ready at all I still kinda want to go in though. Still pretty, tho Honestly, this is the time we should be seeing the sunset, but today nothing seems to go our way Oh well, nature has its good days and stormy days— just like us We still have a lot more to go through I’m trying my best kept walking until we reached Snack Street It opens from 6:30 PM to 11:00 PM. wandering around looking for something to eat, and we happened to stumble upon this place They sell stuff kind of like what we saw yesterday, but— they’re no longer selling those “Thai gimmicks.” The food is pretty similar: grilled skewers, elephant pants, som tam (papaya salad), spicy salads, and fruits. The highlight here is that it’s a narrow street— one single lane that stretches all the way down to the Mekong River. Oh, that tree really did fall! Looks like it just happened. Otherwise, they wouldn’t have closed off the path like this. Grilled mushrooms. let’s try out a mushroom stall. I got grilled mushrooms, drizzled with a sauce that’s kind of like the local version of seafood dipping sauce and stuffed with a spice mix—garlic, galangal, lemongrass The sauce is a bit oily. It’s super delicious But really hard to eat I love mushrooms. I really do. Not disappointed at all. I actually like this market more than the big night market over there because at that one, people kept approaching to ask “Do you want to take photos?” or “Want to dress up in traditional clothes?” The food here is more varied too If you’re looking for something to eat, this area’s better. That other place is better for taking Instagram-style photos— for aesthetic purposes. hey as the car passed through the area with restaurants and crowds I realized we hadn’t walked around this side yet okay, let’s walk around and see what’s here There are a bunch of skewered mala grills.
