Japanese Stationery Shopping in Osaka Parco (Tokyu Hands) ハンズ 文房具 パルコ大阪

Hi everyone, David here! Welcome
back to the channel! Thanks for coming back for another video. Welcome if it’s your
first time, thanks for joining us! Are you doing OK? I’m OK, I think. I’m just
sweating it through the middle of summer. Well, I say the middle of summer. It’s only the
end of July now, so we’ve still got months left of this really oppressive heat. I don’t know if
I’m just dealing with it better this time or what. But of course, I’ve been going to the Expo
a lot and being outside way too much, sweating through all of my clothes. It’s very
gross, but maybe I’m getting used to it. But today, I’m not talking about the Expo for once.
I’m going to be taking you shopping. haven’t done that many shopping videos,
but they do always seem to be quite popular. I’ve been to Loft, for example. I’ve been to
Don Quixote, of course. Last time I went to the Parco building, we did some geek shopping
and got all sorts of Pokémon merchandise and other stuff from manga and games.
So, definitely check those out. Excuse me! Today I’m going to be taking you around a
stationery shop. I guess you could say Loft is a bit of a stationery shop, but that’s
more of a variety goods thing. They have all sorts of things there. Today’s Target is Tokyu
Hands, otherwise just known as Hands recently. They seem to have a different variations. There’s Hands Be somewhere. It’s like a mini shop. I’m going to one of the larger Tokyu Hands
shops in Shinsaibashi. Actually, if you saw that Parco video, it’s in the same building
as that, just a bit higher up. So I’m going to take you around there. We’ve got three floors of
exciting stuff. Tokyu Hands made a name for itself as a stationery store,
but it’s definitely expanded in recent years to do all sorts of other things. So you can see
the breadth of its variety of goods. So I’m going to take you around there. It won’t
take that long compared to some of my other videos hopefully. But on the other side
I’ll talk a bit more about it. But until then, I’ll do the narration in a moment. So, please
like this video, subscribe to the channel. Leave a comment or a question. And also
share this channel or this video to your Japan-loving friends or people coming over
here soon and, that’ll help me a lot. And give me a Super Like if you really want me to
expand this channel, and keep the lights on. OK so, I’m going to hand over to myself and
see you on the other side. OK! Welcome back to Shinsaibashi. Here we are again at the Parco building next to Daimaru, And we’re here to do some stationery shopping. So, we’ve been here before,
you’ve seen my other video, but we’re on the 9th to 11th floors for Tokyu Hands or Hands as
it’s now called. So, let’s start on the 9th floor. It’s mostly taken up with travel accessories
and things like that. So, lots of suitcases here and bags. Some small bags for day trips.
We’ve got some larger bags, maybe for office workers. That’s quite cool, actually.
I should try and get one of those. And some more heavy-duty things for hiking. And a lot of
tourists obviously come to Japan these days. So, suitcases and luggage and carry-on bags, that
sort of thing. People like to go there and fill up their suitcases with discount pharmaceuticals.
And of course, branded things. You’ve got some Pokémon ones there, too. So, definitely check that out for travel suitcases. Even your little bags. You can find some rather strange looking
chains. And it’s sunny out there, so we’ve got umbrellas for rainy season. We’ve got parasols
for sunny season. And elsewhere, we’ve got some Japanese souvenir type things. So,
we’ve got some Maneki Nekos, some Darumas, kind of touristy bits and bobs, Kokeshi dolls,
all sorts of things really. You can buy some nice souvenirs there. Traditional culture, Akaboko,
I think that’s the little cow things. And another kind of traditional culture is sample food. So
you can see this plastic food, which you can use for… I don’t know, mobile phone accessories or
sticking on your keyboards…I don’t know. And Japanese fans too, Sensu as they’re called.
Get those, that would be a nice present for your grandma or someone. Also is that a yukata?
These are kind of summer outdoor clothes. A few bits of character goods, too. We’ve
got some nice Sonic the Hedgehog things, which is definitely up my alley. And some rather
more eccentric things like this cuddly Haniwa, a kind of clay statue from thousands of years
ago. A scary fat cat can intimidate people on your sofa. And Nanoblocks are very popular
here, too. It’s kind of like a tiny version of Lego. You can buy all sorts of interesting models,
characters like Pokémon, characters from anime. There’s a large range of Pokémon ones and also
famous buildings too, like Tokyo Tower. I think there’s a Kinkakuji there, Todaiji. And also Fueki
is a famous glue brand. It’s the kind of glue they use in elementary schools. It’s non-toxic
and it’s so well loved that they’ve got this huge lot of Fueki goods, including candy
which seems like you shouldn’t be eating. And of course some Gacha Gacha machines to fill
up a bit of space. Good for all the tourists. OK. we’re on the next floor now. This
is the 10th floor. This is mostly taken up with cosmetics, which are also a huge industry and
good for the tourists as well. Lots of Chinese people like to get the cheaper stuff here.
Stuff for the summer. Some UV protection. We’ve got some massagers. I think that’s what
they are anyway. Yeah and… I don’t know, massaging masks? I need to get one of those. And some little floor seats, too. I just broke mine so I need to get a new one, I’ll just come here.
Now, I don’t know anything about beauty, apart from my face. So, I’m not going to talk all
the way through the makeup stuff, because I have no idea about it. But you can see here,
a huge selection of shampoos and makeups and beauty masks and everything you need. So,
definitely shop til you drop in the cosmetics area. But I don’t know anything about that,
I promised you stationery! So I’m going to go up to the 11th floor to show you the stationery
floor, I’m going to get to the point. As you can see, lots of this is taking up the whole
floor, which is good. Frixion pens are my my treasure when I constantly make mistakes
when I’m writing. And these have erasable ink, but it’s erased by the heat friction basically,
and it doesn’t come back. And you can write over it with the same pen. Not like the old correction
pens I used to have when I was a kid. And there are all kinds of pens all the way from the most
reasonable all the way to some premium ones. Oh, there’s the Frixion pens again. They’ve
got Frixion highlighters that you can erase. Can you erase a highlighter pen? That’s a
fantasy. Refills and more pro pen stuff around here. Colour pencils as well, for artists.
Now, you could buy regular old Post-it notes if you want, all different sizes, but you can get
some nice customized character ones. Very cute! And some cool notepads as well. These
are nicely decorated. A little bit gaudy for me, but some people will be into that. They’ve got
letter-sealing kits as well. You can seal your letters with wax, and they’ve got all kinds of
wax, too. I honestly hadn’t seen that before. And some more professional stuff for artists as
well. As well as just general filing stuff, you can make your office life more interesting
with some Mario clip note things. You can even buy some reading glasses.
These are not prescription, of course, but if you lose your glasses, you can always pick
them up. You can even pick some up these up in convenience stores sometimes. All kinds
of office supplies. It’s not like back in the day when I was trying to find a A5 folder, I couldn’t
find any. You’ve got a fat cat mouse mat. That’s cute. Luggage tags, I think. All sorts of
pockets and pouches and things. So basically everything you really want. If you’re going to an
idol concert, you can customize your little fan there. Stickers are great as well. They have so
many kinds of stickers in places like this. You can buy cute ones, formal ones, character
ones, offbeat ones. And you can wrap presents as well, easy to find ribbons and gift bags for
those little presents for your family and friends. And yeah, more stickers. I’m really into that.
It’s good for when you’re teaching kids. You can buy them off with some nice sparkly
stickers. You can buy them with themes as well. There’s Pokémon stickers and whatnot,
and some big ones, paper ones. You can buy birthday cards. Well, not really that much,
but you can buy happy summer cards, including these light-up festival ones,
which are really cool with the fireflies. And for more professional artists, we’ve got
colour pencils. I don’t know if that’s crayons and paints and things, oil paints.
So really, if you want to get some professional art supplies, this is the place to go.
They do have some of these in Loft as well, but I think Tokyu Hands is a bit more of a
specialist. Different kinds of art card and other art materials here. You can even get
your surname on a little Kanji stamp. I think you can get them customized
as well, but if you’re not Japanese, it might be hard. Washi tape. Of course, these are
the masking tape things which are very popular. I’ve got lots of it at home, but I don’t know
what to use it for, to be honest. And all kinds of notebooks, of course. I’ve collected too many
notebooks. I need to make more notes of things, I guess, to use them up. Polaroid cameras and
the refills, of course. Probably should stock up on those! And lots of things for photos. Digital
hasn’t kiled all of it yet. So, photo frames and photo albums. There’s lots of party goods,
too. Board games and little fun balloons and things for your party needs. And some cute little
display things. Little objets with your favourite characters. These are really cool. These kinds
of dioramas that you can make from card. They give you all the bits you need from a kit.
There’s a channel I subscribe to that does all these kind of dioramas and they’re really
cool. He’s making them from scratch, though, which is pretty insane. So, you get all of the
parts you need to make your own old-fashioned sweet stores and pickle shops and things.
There’s some little plants you can grow. I think those were little Bonsai trees. I had a bonsai
tree. I killed it pretty quickly, sadly. And lots of other arty-crafty things. And you can get some
cardboard machines you can make. And these other construction projects.
And you can also do like tie-dye! You can dye your clothes and all sorts of things –
t-shirt printing… and I guess I’m not an artist, so I don’t know what these are for. Kind of model
shapes and things you can make items out of. Polystyrene heads can scare some people. Even more artist supplies. this is for crafts. I think this is wood, things like that, you can cut it up.
And even outdoor DIY stuff or indoor stuff you can pick up here. All kinds of proper
paints as well for DIY. Super glue and other interior design things you can do. So yeah,
pretty much everything for everybody. Definitely check out Tokyu Hands. Finally, a few Japanese
items. You can get some nice Zoori sandals. Get a Takoyaki machine. So kitchen goods are
cool here as well. You can get some Japanese knives if you want to, some chopsticks. That
would be a good present to take home and use every day. Little bento boxes as well. I like
these cute little kits and some handmade ceramics, very cute. So, yeah, lots of
good places for souvenirs or even just some gifts for yourself. Just be careful. Don’t
bring that on your carry-on luggage! So, thank you for watching, I hope you enjoyed
Tokyu Hands and I’ll hand over back to myself. Hi, welcome back! What did you think
of Tokyu Hands? Yeah, like I said, I like stationery shops, but I don’t really use stationery that
much because… I think we’re in the digital age and I’m not actively studying for anything at
the moment. So, I kind of feel a bit jealous of all the students who have this whole
variety of things they can buy. I used to like going back to school and doing stationery
shopping there because you… I liked the variety and customizing your stuff is really
cool. Yeah, so I bought some nice things over there in the past. I love the Frixion pens for
example. I use those every day when I’m working. The photo albums – did I show you that before?
When I went to all of the prefectures, I bought a photo album from Tokyu Hands and
took one picture I’d taken from each prefecture I put that in and that’s my little tour album.
So definitely you can get a lot of nice good quality stuff as well.
It’s not as cheap as, for example, going to Daiso, the 100-yen shops. But yeah, you can
get some nice quality things. Of course, you can see all the professional things, art
goods, office supplies, too, but pens as well. You get some fancy stuff there. so definitely
check that out for all your stationery needs. I like that they’re kind of competing with Loft
a little bit to expand into some variety goods. It’s nowhere near as big as Loft at the moment,
but I really miss the one in Umeda. I think I showed you that ages ago.
That was the big Loft Shopping video. I think that’s closed down now. I don’t know
if they’ve relocated or they’re just closed it or not. That was a huge building. But
yeah, there’s lots of other stationery shops you can look around. You just have to keep
your eyes open for them. So, I hope that was interesting. I’m going
to finish there. So, like this video, subscribe to the channel, leave a question
or a comment. I’ll be happy to see those! And share this channel to any stationary loving
friends out there. And, give me a Super Like if you really like this channel and you want to
help me out. I’d appreciate that so much because I really want to get this channel off the
ground, and maybe if I can get a bit of money from the channel, then I can start doing a few
more premium activities that I can show you. Anyway, that’s enough. Thank you very much,
I’ll see you in another video. Take care. Bye-bye.

I’ve made videos about shopping in Japan before, but one of its specialties is stationery. As a nation that still enjoys the appeal of analogue, paper-based expression, Japan has kept itself at the cutting edge of stationery style and technology.

So today I’m visiting Hands, formerly Tokyu Hands, a huge stationery store in Osaka’s Parco building in Shinsaibashi, and taking you on a tour of its three floors. The 9th and 10th floors feature other kinds of goods – travel bags, lifestyle goods, cosmetics and souvenirs, but the 11th floor has a lot of stationery and creatively exciting goods to look through, so get your wallets ready!

Do you have any recommendations or requests for other things you’d like me to make a video of? Let me know in the comments! I just reached 1000 subscribers, thank you! Help me get even more by sharing this channel and favourite videos with your friends!
