町田という街には、無数の声が同時に鳴っている。人の往来が絶えない繁華街を抜けるたびに、誰かの生活の断片や、途切れた記憶のような建物が、静かに視界をよぎる。歩いているのにどこか動かない風景、騒がしいのにふとした瞬間に静まり返る空気。その不安定なリズムの中に足を任せて進んでいくと、突如としてあらわれたのが勝楽寺。近代に再建された釈迦堂は、地上と地下に広がる巨大な施設で、現代建築としての機能美と宗教施設としての重みが同時に存在していた。外観は無機質なほど洗練されていて、けれどその奥にある壁画や吹き抜けの存在を想像すると、かえって静けさが深まっていく。隣に残された昔ながらの山門と本堂は、その沈黙を受け止めるように佇んでいた。都市のざわめきと、時間が止まったような構造物。二つの世界が、距離もなく接している──そんな不思議な瞬間に立ち会う旅だった。
