2000-year-old Cherry Blossoms and Other Aged Sakura Blooming Gracefully in Japan!! 🌸🌸🌸
The fully blooming cherry blossoms stand out beautifully in the blue sky, glow in the setting sun, and even shine under the lights in the night. They will now travel northward with the spring breeze. Enjoy the beauty! Hello, everyone. Today, I’m visiting Jissoji Temple
in Hokuto City, Yamanashi Pref. Jissoji is famous for its cherry blossoms, and it gets quite lively in spring. I’m blessed with clear skies today! Inside the temple grounds, the weeping cherry
trees and Somei Yoshino are in radiant bloom. Many of these trees appear to be
quite aged and full of character. People in ancient times must have admired
these blossoms in spring as we do now. I can now see the main temple hall. Combined with the cherry
blossoms, it looks even more radiant. The weeping cherry trees are in full bloom. They shine brightly against the blue sky. Compared to Somei Yoshino, the petals seem a bit smaller, but they are equally beautiful and elegant in their own right. And of course, when speaking of Jissoji… We can’t forget the Jindai-zakura, one of Japan’s
three great cherry trees, over 2000 years old. This Edo Higan cherry tree has bloomed
every spring since ancient times. It radiates a dignified presence,
worthy of being considered sacred. The flowers swaying in the spring
breeze are a breathtaking sight. Standing 10.3 meters tall (34 ft) with a trunk circumference of 11.8 meters (39 ft), it’s one of Japan’s oldest and largest cherry trees. It is a nationally designated Natural Monument. Though it once faced the threat of death, thanks to many people’s efforts, it still blooms beautifully to this day. May it continue to shine for generations to come. Jissoji is a Nichiren sect temple founded
by the revered priest Nichiren. Surely, even he was captivated by
the beauty of these cherry blossoms. May this breathtaking, paradise-
like scenery continue forever. Now, I move on to the rural area of Kamiyama in
Nirasaki City, a few stations away from Jissoji. Here stands a lone cherry tree known as
“Wani-tsuka no Sakura,” 17 meters (56 ft) tall. It’s a 330-year-old Edo Higan cherry tree. Bathed in the evening light, its petals shine serenely. With a trunk circumference of 3.6 meters (12 ft) and a branch spread of 23 meters (75 ft), it is truly grand in scale. Cherry blossoms glowing in the morning sun are beautiful, but those basking in the sunset are just as stunning. The name “Wani-tsuka” refers to the legend that it is the tomb of Prince Takeda, son of the hero Yamato Takeru… …or perhaps because the mound resembles
the mouth of a “wani” (a type of Buddhist altar item). Surrounded by mountains and rice fields,
this lone cherry tree glows even more brightly. Cherry blossoms are a mirror that reflects the soul. The fully bloomed petals are dazzling to the eye. Looking up close, you can see how small the petals are. Its graceful and delicate form yet
completely captivates the viewers. The giant tree is bathed in the glow of the setting sun. Walking all the way around it,
you can truly feel its size and beauty. As people gather, a natural path begins to
form before the grandeur of the flowers. The sun has dipped quite low in the sky. Even the wild cherry trees are glowing white. Wani-tsuka’s cherry tree stands
silhouetted against the fading light. This cherry tree is about to shine a brilliant white. As the sun sets, the moment arrives when
the cherry tree glows softly in the dusk. It’s as if it’s being lit by the moon itself. With each step closer, the grandeur of the fully-bloomed
cherry tree becomes more overwhelming. Let’s take a walk around it. Unlike during sunset, now each and every petal shines uniformly in a soft white glow. It’s truly a breathtaking sight to behold. Amid the blooming daffodils, the glowing cherry blossoms offer a striking contrast. Gently swaying in the soft breeze, the petals dance like snowflakes
floating gracefully in the sky… Or perhaps like diamonds suspended
in midair, sparkling brilliantly. No matter how long you gaze, you never grow tired of it. Night has now completely fallen. Yet it is in this darkness that the lone
cherry tree shines most beautifully. Compared to the height of a person,
its grandeur becomes even more apparent. It is a fleeting dream on a spring night. The next morning—Wani-tsuka’s
cherry tree bathed in sunrise. Under the blue sky, you can see
Mt. Yatsugatake in the distance. It seems to shine even more beautifully than before. The blossoms of the Edo Higan cherry sway
in the breeze, as if composing a poem… So beautifully, so delicately. At its feet, daffodils celebrate the joys of spring. The wave of cherry blossoms will now continue north,
passing the baton all the way to Hokkaido. Nearby is the Takeda Hiro Shrine. And here… Somei Yoshino blossoms bloom beautifully. This same scenery paints the entire country of Japan. Thank you very much for watching.
As the cherry blossom front makes its way north across the Japanese archipelago, this time I visited Jissoji Temple in Hokuto City, Yamanashi Prefecture—home to one of Japan’s three great cherry trees—and the magnificent lone cherry tree of Wani-tsuka in Nirasaki City, to follow the beauty of spring.
At Jissoji, not only the legendary Jindai-zakura, said to be over 2,000 years old, but also many other cherry trees within the temple grounds shone brilliantly under the spring light. And at Wani-tsuka, I was truly captivated by the grandeur and elegance of its solitary cherry tree.
Please enjoy this glimpse of spring. The cherry blossom front still continues its journey northward. It is my hope that this early breath of spring will reach those in the Tohoku region, Hokkaido, and to people around the world. Someday, I dream of experiencing the blossoms in Hokuriku, Aomori, and Hokkaido. From the bottom of my heart, I hope these peaceful moments will continue for all of us.
