I am Ira, an island cartoonist living in Singapore. This helicopter scene looked like the opening scene of the first Resident Evil movie. The main characters being left behind by chicken hearts. The village of Aogashima is often shrouded in thick fog. Is this the world of Silent Hill? The internet has never worked, even though it is a settlement. Rakuten Mobile eSIM and Both Docomo SIM cards and one other SIM are completely powerless. Means of communication with the outside world has been destroyed. 300 yen geothermal sauna. The normal temperature of 35.6°C has been in the 36°C range since this day, indicating a change in my constitution. The geothermal kettle is free to use. Food and drink can be procured at the store. Stores with unusually low sales prices despite being on a secondary island. Cheaper than Singapore. Store owner says, “Thanks for noticing. I’m 100% in the red.” Really concerned. The phenomenon of AMAZON shutting down stores on remote islands is on a Japan-wide scale. Visits to the shochu factory on Aogashima must be reserved in advance. If you are not good at calling in Japanese, ask the manager of the store to present a translation app. I’ve brought my own camping gear. The survival game has begun. That was the plan, but… Worried about my solo camping and they said, “Aogashima will also appear in Maharajima, so let’s help provide information.” The kind people of Aogashima have taken care of us. I met them for the first time and stayed at their separate house for free. The room is more than twice larger than the guest house on Aogashima. Washing machine, microwave, etc. available. In addition, we got the experience of being guided around Aogashima in their car for 2 days. Thank you so much. Ira’s mother: “Our Ira was a great help to us.” Next time I come back to Japan, I’ll send them a letter and some goods from Singapore. To the kind islanders. The Izu Islands, to which Aogashima belongs, appear in Maharajima mainly in Chapter 3. Here we visit Akusekijima-island of the Tokara Islands in Kagoshima Prefecture and the Maharabito of Takashima-island in Saga Prefecture. Akusekijima is also a geothermal island. (Aogashima Island has not a little in common with Okinawa and Kagoshima, but it does not seem to have a culture of eating shell ginger tea) I can say this because I have been to more than 460 inhabited islands in about 2 years. The inhabited islands where there was no internet connection in the village… Aogashima is the only inhabited island. And an island that looks like Resident Evil and Silent Hill minus the danger factor. Only this Aogashima. Aogashima has a low population, and it’s PR. The encounter rate with the islanders is quite high. It’s a Silent Hill type of thing. Giant volcanic island, Satsuma Iwo Jima, was almost 0%. About 200 people live there, more than on Aogashima. Apparently, people in Tokyo are less reclusive. And the NPCs (Aogashima islanders) are not. frequently exchanged more interesting and funny stories than on Japanese variety shows. A cheerful survival island. I went to Aogashima to photograph the double caldera… The more I talked to them, the less I cared about the caldera. The real attraction of Aogashima is the islanders. Living off the bounty of nature on this island. There used to be a continuous human demon on Aogashima, but I’ll talk about that later. Ira has been preparing for a solo-canning trip, but The campgrounds here are in many ways not as good as those in the other Izu Islands. Other campers abandoned their campsites this day and switched to inns. Renting a car in Aogashima The total cost of a light car and gasoline is about 5,000 yen per day. I do not rent a car. The person who is driving now is from Aogashima. They showed me around the island. The sea was calm that night so I was able to come here. From the village it is about a 2 hour walk uphill. Many places are off-limits. If you have poor Japanese reading skills, I suggest you do not come here. Not only on this island, but quite a few people are saved by falling into the sea at night. “Strategy for landing on Aogashima Island” We talk about the landing strategy. The strategy is also the strategy of the accelerated landing, with over 13 cancellations. I set my date to go 3 months in advance. Access to Aogashima is by helicopter or ferry from Hachijojima in Tokyo. Hachijojima Airport is considered one of the most difficult airports in Japan to land and land. ANA “Hachijojima Airport: In case of no landing due to poor visibility We expect to have to turn back to Tokyo.” Passengers are asked to board with their understanding.” It is not uncommon for planes to turn back to Haneda. May 2025 also saw frequent flight cancellations and turnbacks. The “Tokyo Islands Tourism Cooperation Promotion Council” has been established. The “Aogashima Island May is relatively calm in terms of waves and winds.” What about the many cancellations every year in May? The Izu Islands start the rainy season more than 2 weeks earlier than the Japanese inner islands. May is already the heavy rain season. In 2023 there is also a typhoon in June, but in my opinion April or June is the best time to go in the spring. March has seen a significant increase in cold weather and poor sea conditions throughout Japan in recent years. Anyway, it is cold and not the tourist season. Especially in May 2025, the ferry cancellation rate was also high. My strategy was to choose May in anticipation of cancellations and waiting list advances. I have a lot of experience when I go to 460 islands. To get to Hachijojima, you can take a ferry from Takeshiba, Tokyo. I will be staying in Hachijojima a day early because I will not be able to make it in time for helicopter reception. By the way, campsites on Hachijojima are available for 0 yen. If the timing of your trip is not clear, as in the case of Aogashima, one of the strategies is to coordinate your trip at the campground. I chose to fly because I also wanted to photograph Hachijojima. “Aogashima is not the most difficult island to land on or escape from.” Aogashima is sometimes called “the most difficult island to land on or escape from in Japan. Actually it is not. Ferry service averages about 60% per year. Helicopters are said to be about 80% on average per year. The week I was there in May, helicopters were less than 10%. It was in service only on the day I boarded. The most difficult ferry landing in Japan is on Daito Island, Okinawa (based on weather conditions). The month I went, the ferry service was only about 20%. The service is usually about 1 per week. In contrast, Aogashima has 4 runs per week. Unlike Aogashima, Daitojima does not even allow boats to dock there in the first place. Humans are disembarked by crane. Even for free, government funding for Daito Island is very scarce. I would like to see all of the politicians’ slush funds go to the island. I waited in Okinawa for 4 weeks and was able to land on the island on the 5th ferry. The Tokara Islands in Kagoshima, between Okinawa and mainland Japan. It is an annual tradition there to not transport supplies for 3 weeks. No helicopters or planes. The longest flight cancellations at Aogashima in recent years have been 2 weeks. A week shorter than Kagoshima and Okinawa. Lanyu, Taiwan has 40% annual air service. Aogashima is twice as likely to get there as this. If you have not been to those yet, try Aogashima as a prelude. From Taiwan and Kyushu’s point of view, Tokyo’s environment is not harsh I went to Aogashima for one candidate only on May 19. I had decided on this date in February. ANA has a sale in February so I can go from Haneda to Hachijojima for 9,170 yen. The lowest ferry fare in May is 11,360 yen for an adult. If you have a Japanese disability certificate, it is half price, 5,680 yen. This helicopter also has a discount for the disabled, but it is 8,810 yen, not half price. The ferry to Aogashima is half price, 1,050 yen. Campsites on Aogashima are available for 0 yen. To apply for use of the campground, send an email to the Aogashima village office. However, the email response rate at Aogashima village hall was 25%, which I didn’t expect. I sent it and urged them to do so because they didn’t respond even after a month. The % is much worse than the traffic on Aogashima. I went to the town hall because it was open for reservations. There was no record of my reception. I said my name, but They confirmed another camper’s name. I can say this because I have been to 460 islands. Of all the town halls, Aogashima has the second worst response rate. And with such envelopes to campers. and a map in hard-to-read print. The important roads are not printed at all, meaningless MAP. No paper distribution at other campgrounds in Izu Islands. Information is sufficient without bodies. Because the environment may be difficult to change with a male staff member at the reception desk I have tried to convey this information to the administrator in this way this time. Another map is easier to understand. Even if you are given a paper about how to make a reservation after you have made a reservation. It’s like, aren’t you talking to the wrong person? And the document had a typo. Above. The operation is just a waste of paper resources and requires improvement. The islanders are aware of the SDGS and the administration can’t do this. I wonder also how the personnel performance for setting issues and improvement efforts each fiscal year is being measured. Restrooms at the campground, but no lighting at night. Hachijojima, Miyakejima, and other islands in the Izu archipelago have nighttime lighting. This was another reason another camper quit camping. Toilet paper was wet from moisture, but the spare was packed properly. This location seems too dark at night to be difficult for sensitive people. Some campers took shelter in the pavilion because of the rain. The wind could be overcome but drainage seemed to be an issue. “Selecting the day of the week to land.” I landed here on Monday and left on Tuesday. I chose Monday for three reasons. 1: How to use paid holidays. Most company employees are off on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. Company employees who come to Aogashima use their paid holidays to visit on weekends. So when they learn about the possibility of ANA and ferry cancellations due to bad weather on the weekend… So they cancel the helicopter as well as the set. So the probability of fewer visitors increases on Fridays and Mondays, which are around the weekend. 2: Attendance request Why I chose Monday instead of Friday. Attendance applications and customs. If paid leave request after Monday was reflected in attendance status. When a weekend landing was abandoned The application must be withdrawn during working hours on Friday. I have reversed this working common sense. On Saturday morning, people on the waiting list for the helicopter advance will be contacted. And the helicopter company to Aogashima is closed on Sunday. And the rule for contacting people on the waiting list is that the contact ends at 16:00 two days before boarding. So if you are boarding on Monday, you can enjoy the benefits of 1 and 2. 3: Not too dependent on helicopters. Ferries are more likely to be in service during rainy periods. The ferry can accommodate 50 passengers compared to the helicopter’s 9-person quota. From Hachijojima Airport to the port is a 50 minute walk or cab ride. Cab reservations are not available on Hachijojima. If you can’t get a cab at the airport, you are OUT. At my time, it took about 15 minutes from arrival at Hachijojima Airport to picking up my luggage. When I called the guest house on Aogashima, they refused to give me a ride to the port and told me to hitchhike. I would lose interest in staying at such an inn. There are no cabs on Aogashima, so going up the hill for two and a half hours is tiring, to be honest. “About the weather” It’s more than 3 months away, so I’m basing my decision on experience and intuition. I think I also have the benefit of visiting Ise shrine. I am a believer in the god of fire, so it may be my affinity with volcanic islands. Also I’ve been a fortune teller since I was a kid. The day I was going, I had a fortune-telling session. “Aogashima’s sake brewery” (Paperwork until 24:00 tonight. Tomorrow morning he will be here working on the brewery) (His English name is Good One) (Tasting of alcohol distilled yesterday) (37-38% alcohol by volume) The blood people here are human. They are people with a presence close to the island. I had the impression that his grandchildren were also very transparent. I didn’t feel that about the other people with last names I saw the day I was there. You might be able to tell that when you are waiting to leave while shopping at a store. When the husband here pulls up in front of a store and has one hand out I learned that it’s a signal to say, “Can he have a can of coffee, please?” The sight of a visitor to Aogashima bringing a can of coffee and shaking hands with his kinsman It will be depicted until maharaji. The maharaji of Aogashima appears as his descendant, and He forms a cooperative relationship with the Tokaras of Kagoshima. Next morning at 8:00 am. Helicopter flight cancelled. Ship is confirmed for service. Internet still not working so I asked a police officer to tell me. NPC walked into a store wearing full-body camouflage clothing. There is no Self-Defense Forces base on Aogashima. Police officers were greeting islanders commuting to work and school from around 8:00 AM. He is also an interesting person to talk to. I received his business card at the port. He is a polite person. By the way, there are many island schools in Japan that offer study abroad programs on remote islands. We have interviewed dozens of schools with permission from the local board of education. It’s not just kids growing up in the city or with disabilities. There are several examples of people who have lived abroad and choose to study on a remote island as their children grow up. Most of the people involved were willing to agree, e.g., “Of course it is OK, since the MEXT recommends that we disseminate information. However, the Aogashima Village Board of Education immediately refused. Niijima, also in the Izu Islands, was OK for coverage. Aogashima, where the Japanese word for “preventing” is used on the website of a remote island study abroad program. There is a Japanese dictionary called Kojien. It is the only dictionary used in Japanese courts. This is the basic treatment of word definitions. It also states that to prevent means to hinder by force or other means against the opposition. The website of Aogashima says, “At first, there was controversy on both sides…” Please be more mild-mannered than the approach of blocking the project. That’s why the school in Aogashima appears only as scenery in the comic. Aogashima in full scrum, preventing many things. I have a theory that if you form a scrum, it would be the strongest in the Izu Islands. Only for blocking. I went to a shrine that was built to counter the continuous ⚫︎ human demon haunting. There are two routes, but I didn’t have time for mine. I went up this steep boulder staircase. This is a route that many tourists do not choose. Slippery stones due to rain and thick fog. If you fall down here, you are sure to be injured and heaven forbid. There were many places where you could only put about the toes of your feet. Some social networking sites are showing pictures of Aogashima and this shrine as “rejected” and “terrifying”. After the blocking story earlier, is this the next rejection story? In fact, when I came to this island, I didn’t feel rejected or afraid. NPCs have a 100% greeting rate. What a Silent Hill Island. I read the literature about the perpetrators here at the library in Aogashima. This is the man who allegedly killed 7 people with an axe and wounded another 4 in 1757. Seems impossible with one axe with a spilled blade, assuming one for two people, was he equipped with 5 axes? Aogashima’s weapon, battleaxe. A miscommunication between him and a woman he has a mutual love for, and the woman throws her life away. The story was about a woman who attacked him and said, “It’s your fault.” Isn’t that because of the communal disorder? According to the librarian, “Some of the literature says it’s the end result of jumping into the sea, but in fact it’s not.” Maybe you’ve been reborn in another world and are living a second life. He’s a quirky character, I think he should live a third life until Maharaji. After this, the islanders drove us to the harbor. On the way, we looked for red cockatoos (birds) together and made some memories. I also received handmade sweets with a Chinese message. The humidity here is in the 90% range, like Singapore. It has a desiccant and the packaging is hermetically sealed. The message card is brought to the island. This one picture alone shows how attentive and careful he is in his work! Yesterday the husband’s wife gave us two homemade rice balls. But this rice ball is a fastball. The best rice ball I have ever had. I wonder if the rainwater from Aogashima is the secret of its deliciousness. Why not make it a new business and make it by advance reservation only? The rice balls at convenience stores in Singapore are so dry that they break up in the air when you eat them. The only thing rice can break down in mid-air is fried rice. It seems to feel like a neighborhood to NPCs, so much so that they go to Hachijojima in sandals. Eating and drinking are not allowed on the ferry. That’s probably why the carpets are cleaner than on other ships. I couldn’t take a picture of Aogashima up close because the sandal islanders were taking selfies for too long. The island is treated as an ornament. I’ve been to 460 islands, and Aogashima is the only one (that I saw). I stayed overnight after this at a campground on Hachijojima because I was going to Mikurashima by ferry the next morning. Thank you for watching.

In some Japanese villages, there is no internet access. If we are outside of our accommodation, we may not be able to make a phone call even if we are injured.
With this in mind, we hope you will enjoy visiting Japan's inhabited remote islands.
This video is based on my own experience. Please check the latest information before you go. Links to my blog posts on how to book and board a helicopter to this island can be found in the overview section.
Thank you.
