香川の小豆島で旅行してよかったと思える観光スポットはココ!
Hello. This time I went to Shodoshima in Kagawa Prefecture, so I’d like to introduce the places I found interesting. Before I went to Shodoshima, I thought it was just an island famous for olives, but when I actually went there, I found it very interesting. I’d also like to introduce some of the things I thought were bad about my trip to Shodoshima, so please watch until the end. This time I took the ferry from Takamatsu to Tonosho. Is there a way to get to Tonosho by ferry or by high-speed boat? The locations for the high-speed boat and the ferry are different in Takamatsu. The ticket sales and waiting areas are different, so I kept going around the high-speed boat and it took me a while to realize that this was the wrong way. I got on the ferry pretty close to time, so be careful not to make a mistake. The one you see here is the boarding point for the high-speed boat. It’s number 3. The brick building you see in the distance on this side is the ferry terminal. So, I took this ferry, with its cool-looking kanji for the port, to Shodoshima. I took the 8am ferry on a weekday. There weren’t many people on board. Also, the Yadon that you see all over Kagawa was here too. We are approaching the port of Tonosho. There is a famous sesame oil factory near the port, and when we step onto the shore, we can faintly smell the delicious aroma. It is located about 20 km northeast of Takamatsu City. Strictly speaking, Shodoshima refers to the island on the eastern side of the Tsuchibuchi Strait, but it is generally called Shodoshima together with the island on the west side. Recently, it has become famous for being the location for the filming of the TV drama “Teasing Master Takagi-san” here. The mayor is also riding that wave. There are lockers at the port waiting room, so if you’re just here for a little sightseeing, you can leave your luggage there and go out and have fun. I picked up the scooter I reserved for rental and went around Shodoshima. The first place I came to was Tsuchibuchi Strait. It’s the narrowest in the world and is registered in the Guinness World Records. It’s so narrow you might mistake it for a river, but it’s a strait. A strait is treated like an ocean that separates land from another, and even when you look at it on Google Maps, it certainly does seem to separate land, like a river, but it is a sea. When you think of a strait, you think of the famous Strait of Dover, or the Kanmon Strait in Japan, but this is also a fine strait. There is a place nearby called the Maze Town. Why is it called a maze? The unique streetscape of the area was designed to protect the islanders’ lives from pirates, and to protect their buildings and daily life from the sea breeze. The complex alleyways resemble a maze, which is why it’s called the maze town. When I walked around the town, I found it to have a very retro feel, and it was interesting to see the old-fashioned streetscape, or maybe the back alleys. However, there are also ordinary houses, so it’s hard to take your time and look around, so we head to the next place after seeing the monument marking the birthplace of Kadoya Oil, famous for its sesame oil. While moving, we saw a few places with small boat docks on the sea side. These are small embankments, but each one is in a beautiful location and makes a great picture. These places remind me of the innocent times I used to play on the embankments as a child. Next we went to Ikeda’s box seats. Box seats are like the seats you sit on when watching fireworks. This place is designated as a national important tangible folk cultural property. I wasn’t sure if it was okay to climb up, so I could only see it from below, but I thought it was a very impressive piece of technology. The small breakwater and box seats are great, but if you go up a little hill, the view of the sea and mountains is very beautiful. This photo was taken near the parking lot of the National Guest House Shodoshima. I think it’s amazing that you can see this view from the parking lot. I stopped off at the roadside station, Shodoshima Furusato Mura. You can eat soft serve ice cream made with plums grown on Shodoshima here. You might be wondering why people would eat soft serve ice cream in January, but it was delicious. Aside from plums, strawberries are also famous. Next, I went to Shodoshima Olive Garden. What do you think of when you hear the word olive? You probably only imagine famous actors pouring olive oil on their food, right? That’s what I thought. I was surprised when I saw this olive tree. I never imagined it would be so short. Also, it may have been because it was winter, but I thought there would be an olive smell everywhere, but that wasn’t the case. Olives first came to Japan in the mid-1800s. In the early 1900s, olives were brought to Shodoshima, and olives became available for harvesting. Even though it’s a farm and well maintained, the olive trees you can see around you are something you don’t see very often, so it’s a strange feeling to walk around. There is a tree labeled “Olive Tree.” When I read the description, it says it is a second generation olive tree, which means it is a second generation olive tree that was brought to Shodoshima in the early 1900s, so I assume it is quite old. When you get to the top of the hill, you can walk along a path surrounded by olive trees, which is very beautiful. I usually have a chance to see plum blossoms and cherry blossoms, but it’s rare to see olive trees, so it was a very valuable experience for me. Also, you can buy olive chocolate at the souvenir shop here. It’s green chocolate, but it’s very delicious, so please buy it as a souvenir. I highly recommend it. And I recommend not only chocolate, but also soft serve ice cream made with olives! I love soft serve ice cream, it’s delicious. The cider was also very good. After finishing the second soft serve ice cream of the day, I ate some somen noodles and headed to the next place. Please note that some restaurants require reservations at lunchtime. The next place I came to was Tenguiwa Quarry. This is the remains of the place where the rocks were cut, and you can see the dynamic remains of the huge rocks that were cut. I wonder if Shodoshima is famous for its rocks? You can see rocks peeking out from the mountainside everywhere. The Tenguiwa Quarry is the largest of the remaining quarries on Shodoshima. Then, climb up the stairs to the top. It’s quite steep, so you might want to wear comfortable shoes. Osaka Castle is said to have the tallest stone walls in Japan. This is the site of the stone walls used to build Osaka Castle. And this big rock is 17 meters tall and weighs an estimated 1,700 tons. Large cut rocks are everywhere. There were so many rocks that I think Urokodaki would have no problem giving me permission to go to the final selection after cutting such big rocks. I think it’s amazing how skilled they are to cut and carry the rocks outside, even though it would be scary if a big rock rolled down. Next, I went to see the Road of Hope. If you look out over the sea from the Tengu Rock Quarry, you’ll see an island. By the way, this side is the direction of Awaji Island. It was hazy that day, so I couldn’t see it. If you go back towards Tonosho from Tenguiwa Cave, you will find Nanpudai in Setonaikai National Park. I couldn’t tell if it was “Nanpu” or “Minamikaze”. From there, you can take the Kibo no Michi. It’s a hill that goes down from Nanpudai. When you get there, you start to wonder if this is really the right path. When I passed a place like that, I saw a sign, so I knew I had come here. The ground wasn’t that good. I recommend wearing comfortable shoes. The water is so clear and beautiful. There seem to be lots of tasty fish. I walked down the hill. There was no road, but this private beach feeling was great! The water is so clear and you can see the road well, so it’s a great place. It’s hard to get to from Tonosho Port without a car or motorcycle, but it’s a great place, so I highly recommend it. After seeing the wonderful place on the road of hope, we head back towards Tonosho. The view of the ocean on the way is very beautiful, and there is also a soy sauce factory. Here we eat a soy sauce soft serve ice cream. It’s so delicious, it’s not just vanilla with soy sauce and eggs. It’s amazing, I want to order it again. It was that kind of dish. I only saw the exterior of the factory, but it had a retro feel and was very interesting. Do you know what a strange view is? It is also called a “special scenic spot,” and means a rare or wonderful view. Kagawa Prefecture’s Kankakei is one of Japan’s three most special views. Mt. Myogi in Gunma Prefecture is another one of them. This time, I looked up at Kankakei from Utsumi Dam. I was surprised at how magnificent the view was. And even if you look toward the sea, you can see a beautiful view. I looked at it from Sakura Square nearby, and the view from there was also beautiful. The dam itself is very large, and the view from the dam, both looking up and looking down, was beautiful. Since coming to Shodoshima, I’ve often looked down from the hills, so I really enjoyed looking down and up. I rented a scooter on this trip. You can enjoy touring while looking at beautiful scenery as you ride a scooter, with the sea right on your left. This video was generated at double speed to create a sense of speed. I won’t tell you how many times faster. But getting into trouble with the police in a place like this would ruin the trip, so I stick to a speed limit of 30km/h. I went on a warm day between cold spells, so it was fine, but it’s still cold in January, so you might need some thicker clothes or a jacket. It would be amazing if it was summer. I’m back near the maze town of Tonosho. There are famous places like Angel Road. This area can be reached in about 30 minutes on foot from Tonosho Port. I think you can walk to Dobuchi Strait, Maze Town, and the Five-Storied Pagoda from the port. If you just want to enjoy Shodoshima, this might be a good place to do it, but if you only visit this area, you’ll only be able to enjoy about 2% of the island’s fun. I came to Angel Road, the most famous attraction on Shodoshima. It’s certainly beautiful. It’s definitely worth seeing. However, when comparing it to the road I had just taken, it’s hard to decide which is better. This time I rented a scooter, so I recommend it because it’s easy to get around these alleys. The next place I came to was Shigeiwa. You can see a beautiful view. But I kept climbing up a narrow road where it was really hard to pass other cars, then I had to climb some more steep stairs, and then I climbed some more, and by this point my muscles were sore and my legs were sore. When you look at it from above, you can see that you are climbing up a staircase like this. There is a small building on the way, and you take a break here, thinking that you have finally arrived, and look down. It is very beautiful. But it doesn’t end there, there is more to go. When I walk, I think to myself, “Wow, they made a great path here.” And how many times have these chains and poles saved me? If I hadn’t had these, I might have fallen. That’s how steep the path is. At the top of that, there is this rock. This big rock that looks like it might fall but doesn’t, and the Seto Inland Sea seen from this height, are very beautiful. And the color of the ocean at my feet is so beautiful. The islands in the distance are also so beautiful. Also, it might have been even more beautiful if it hadn’t been so hazy. Since I’d climbed up here, I had to go down, but when I got down, I was so scared that I didn’t have time to take any photos. There’s a small cafe called CACAO-an in the parking lot, but it was closed on the day I visited. I was able to get some good exercise at the end of my trip to Shodoshima. I’m back at Tonosho port. From here, I take a ferry back to Takamatsu. The Tonosho port is the same as the Takamatsu port, but the ferry ticket office and the high-speed boat ticket office are in different buildings, so be careful. After buying the ticket, I went to look for souvenirs in this building. It seems that you can get some snacks there, but it was closed. And the reason I chose the ferry is because I wanted to stand on this deck. And because I wanted to see the sunset from there. I had a lot of fun in Shodoshima. Finally, I was glad to see such a beautiful sunset. I recommend the ferry. Shodoshima is not just an island, it’s a very interesting island. And I once made a mistake. I stayed in Takamatsu and came to Shodoshima for a day trip, but I didn’t have enough time. I probably didn’t see even half of Shodoshima. So I thought it would be better to stay on the island for a night or two and see more. That’s all for now. Thank you for watching until the end. If you want to visit Shodoshima, please comment, like, and subscribe to the channel.
