Overnight Bus Trip to Kanazawa with Folding Bike🚲🚌 | BROMPTON | Japan Travel Vlog
Hello 😀 Today I’m at Yokohama station. Night as you can see. It is now 21:45. This is my first attempt. I will try to take a overnight bus with my folding bicycle. The destination is Kanazawa. I will take an overnight bus from Yokohama and
arrive in Kanazawa tomorrow morning. I plan to sightsee for a full day and return by overnight bus again that night. It is almost time to board. Let’s take the first overnight bus trip of my life. This is what the interior of the car looks like
when you sit down on a seat. There is a curtain between you and the seat next to you. It does not close completely. It is pitch black when the bus departs and
the lights go out. Good night at once. Around 1:00 AM. We stopped at a service area for a restroom break. There are lots of long-distance trucks. The overnight bus trip has just begun. It will take another 6 hours from here to Kanazawa. It is now morning. It looks like it rained. …To be honest, I didn’t sleep very well…I had to stop at the service area every two hours or so, so I would inevitably wake up. Around 7:40 am. Arrival at Kanazawa Station. My buttocks are already sore from sitting for so long. The symbol of Kanazawa Station is now in sight. This huge gate is called “Tsuzumi-mon”. It is inspired by the tsuzumi drum used in Noh, a traditional performing art of Kanazawa. It looks somewhat like a torii gate. Assembling the Brompton. I love the moment it clicks into place. Now, on this trip, I would like to take advantage of my bicycle’s mobility to visit many sightseeing spots in Kanazawa City. First, head for Higashi Chaya District. There is an elegant public bathhouse. There are many tasteful houses with tiled roofs. More and more buildings have a sense of history. I will be arriving soon. The sound of wind chimes is pleasant… It is 9:00 a.m., and the only sound echoing in the empty street is the sound of wind chimes. Here, the Higashi Chaya Districti is a teahouse district that has continued since the Edo period. This area, once part of the castle town of Kanazawa,
has been beautifully preserved as a teahouse district. Many rare teahouse-style buildings from that time still remain today. It’s before the shops open, so there’s no one around. There was a swallow’s nest here. There are chicks. I have never seen them this close before. They were raising their children in fairly close proximity to people. You know that the people here are safe. Now, I will come back around noon when the stores are open and I will head to another place. Still, it really is a charming town. I came to a place called Ume Bridge. This elegant bridge crosses between Kanazawa city center and the Higashi Chaya District. I came to Kenroku-en, a special place of scenic beauty designated by the national government. Here, Kenroku-en is a vast Japanese garden created by the feudal lords of Kaga Domain. It is said that Kenroku-en originated when a feudal lord built his villa here and created a garden around it. Take a walk in the gardens. This statue was built in 1880. A huge pine tree. I wonder how many years it takes to grow this big. The pitless sun blazes red, The pitless sun blazes red,
But the wind whispers ― The pitless sun blazes red,
But the wind whispers ―
autumn is near. The pitless sun blazes red,
But the wind whispers ―
autumn is near.
― Bashō I tried to be cool and include a haiku that Bashō composed in Kanazawa, but it was Kenroku-en in summer. After Kenroku-en, I came to Kanazawa Castlle. It is actually located right next to Kenroku-en. Take a walk inside Kanazawa Castle as well. The original Kanazawa Castle was built around 1546. As the lord of the castle changed through battles, turrets and other structures were gradually built, and the castle grew in size. Due to numerous fires in the past, most of the current castles have been reconstructed. Moat and high stone wall turret. You can visit the inside of this tenement house,
so let’s go there. Inside the tenement house, visitors can view materials related to the history of Kanazawa Castle and the restoration work. Well, I think it’s time to go have lunch. I looked up Kanazawa’s famous food, and it seems there is a restaurant nearby where I can eat it, so I will go there. I just love these kinds of local diners that are beloved by the community. This restaurant offers one of Kanazawa’s specialties, “Hanton Rice”. Enter the restaurant immediately. Here is Kanazawa’s specialty, Hanton Rice. A classic version of Hanton Rice consists of an omelet rice topped with a fried white fish fillet, finished with ketchup and tartar souce. At this restaurant, it looks like they also add a fried shrimp on top. Looks delicious! 😋 Itadakimasu! Omelet rice and fried shrimp ―of course it’s delicious! Hanton Rice originated as a bribe dish at a Western restaurant. It’s certainly like having the classic dishes of a Western restaurant on one plate. I enjoyed the food afterwards. Thank you for the food. I returned to Higashi Chaya District. I would like to take a break in a cafe. I ordered a set of shaved ice with green tea and iced coffee. Nothing beats shaved ice on a hot day. Drizzle a generous amount of matcha syrup on top… Time to dig in! Too delicious… It soaks right into my tired body… Reset my sweet mouth with coffee. As a child, I hated sweet treats. That might be unusual. As an adult, I developed a love for sweet treats and started going to cafes. Is it because I can drink coffee now? Taste preferences change quite a bit as you grow from child to adult. That is why I secretly look forward to eating something sweet at a nice cafe when I travel. Thank you for the food. The second half of my trip to Kanazawa.
The sun is beginning to set. Mizuhiki work is a traditional craft of Kanazawa. Mizuhiki is the same as noshi-bukuro (gift envelopes). What I am heading for now is such a museum of mizuhiki work. This facility has both a mizuhiki craft store and a museum. Various accessories and lampshades made of mizuhiki were sold. You can also visit the museum attached to the museum. How beautiful… So many lamps and wind chimes made of mizuhiki. Enter the world of beautiful mizuhiki lamps. Breathtaking beauty… Please visit this museum, it is really beautiful. I recommend it. Now, the houses where the samurai lived still remain in Kanazawa. There is a place where you can tour the inside of such samurai residences, so let’s go there. I came to the Nomura-ke, a house where samurai once lived. What a magnificent garden…! The Nomura-ke is a venerable samurai family that existed for about 290 years, from around 1583 until the abolition of the domain in 1871. Just by looking at this magnificent garden, you can tell that they were powerful samurai. This armor was actually used in war and weighs 20 kg. This is the Senda-ke Garden. This garden is located next to the Nomura-ke mentioned earlier. This garden has a rare “suikinkutsu”. If you pour water here… Do you hear this strange sound? (You can listen to it with headphones if you like.) Now using a bamboo tube… A beautiful sound can be heard from beneath the ground! This suikinkutsu is designed so that droplets of water fall into a hollow chamber underground, creating resonant, echoing sounds. The suikinkutsu in this garden is a rare piece made in the Edo period and is said to be the only one of its kind in Kanazawa. This is actually a place to wash your hands. People used to make beautiful sounds with the water that fell when they washed their hands. I wonder if people in the past used to gaze at this beautiful garden while listening to the sound. It is very elegant. This trip is almost over. How was it? I’m going to explore this place before I catch the bus back home. This, Kazuemachi Chaya District, is also a historic teahouse district like Higashi Chaya District. It’s nighttime and the stores are closed, but it’s a very nice atmosphere. What lies ahead? Shall we go? Stairs. Brompton is lightweight and can be carried with one hand. What’s at the top? There was a shrine. This staircase seems to be a place called “Dark Slope”. As the name suggests, it is quite dark and a bit scary at night. But it has a nice atmosphere. This was my first overnight bus trip. It was a one-day trip, but I was able to visit many spots thanks to the Brompton. In this channel, I will show you the sights and casual scenery of Japan through my travels. Please subscribe to my channel, give me high ratings and comments. See you on the next trip.

Hi there, thanks for sharing! Do you lock your bike when you go for lunch? If yes, how and where do you lock your bike as the place seems so small?

Which bus company was that?
If I ever get to go back to Japan, a bike of some kind will be involved. Everywhere was walkable, and public transport was amazing, but I feel I missed so much by not wandering around as much as I could with two wheels.
