Road Trip in Texas | Saying Goodbye to Grandma, Celebrating Life

It’s hot. H.E.B. I’ve never seen ground beef this size before. Wow! Texas-size pack! I see. The variety of meat is amazing. If the meat looks this delicious and is this cheap,
I feel like making something with it. Big! Beef chunk from H.E.B. Wow! Very big Texas size. Let’s make UMAMI beef chunk. I’m going to use beef chunk,
canned tomatoes, vegetables, broth and of course UMAMI SAUCE! “UMAMI SAUCE!!” – “That was a good idea, right?”
– That was a great idea. Oh, maybe I’ll cook this together too,
it might help get rid of the smell. This is the warmest it’s ever been in America. “That was a nice sound.” “You’re going to make
a video out of that, right?” I always clean up without saying anything. But if I don’t say anything, nothing will change,
so I thought I’d try saying something. You have to realize that at the right moment. “Mom? That’s what I’m saying, okay?
Don’t get mad?” “Are you mad at Dad
for doing something wrong?” You’re saying that I also have my flaws,
so I should understand that, right? We’re all the same, aren’t we? “Right? You also have your flaws,
so say it gently.” Right! That’s what I mean! I’m going to cry. Can you just put all of this in there? Wow! OMG! Carrot filling seems like
it would smell good, doesn’t it? – Okay, thank you!
– “You’re welcome.” “Where are the napkins?” – Sutan, can you sprinkle some salt on this?
– “Sure!” It’s so big! – “It’s pink!”
– Like this, from high. “Let’s rub it.” Evenly please. – “Look!”
– Wow, that looks delicious! – “Is this a cow?”
– Cow! – It’s a cow. Thank you for your life.
– “Thank you!” I’ve never used one this big before, look. -What are you going to do now?
-I’m going to write down the route we took. We didn’t get to study maps much on Friday,
so today we’re going to study maps. – Look, look, what country is this?
– “The USA” The place we went to is here, Los Angeles We were in this area of Los Angeles. We went to a place called Armspring. The red pen marks the places we’ve been to. We went to Armspring and then to Phoenix. Then we stayed here in Las Cruces too. We passed through Tucson,
and we also went to El Paso, right? Oh! This was along the border
from El Paso southward. We also stayed in Fort Stockton. – We’ve been to quite a few places, haven’t we?
– Today we’re here at this place. – From here to the middle, isn’t it amazing?
– Wow! Dad, you did a great job! – “Is this how we go around?”
– Exactly. One-fourth! That’s how it looks.
It’s not really a quarter, more like a tenth. But in terms of time, it’s a quarter, right?
Two months… a sixth? I want to talk about what we were
discussing in the car today. When we were here, it was hot, right? When we got to this area,
there were lots of cacti, right? There’s no water at all,
and it hasn’t rained at all up to this point. And today, when we drove here,
it was just cacti all the way, right? But from here on,
trees started to grow gradually… Oh, there were some berries like blueberries,
and there were trees with fruits hanging outside, remember? – “Highway.”
– Yeah, the highway, right? That’s around here,
this area doesn’t get much rain. “What about this? Does it rain here?” It rains, this area doesn’t get much rain
but it does rain Is it delicious? It’s unbelievably delicious! – “Try eating it with bread, Dad.”
– It’s delicious, isn’t it? Wow! It’s so cute! Thank you! Sutan, this is really delicious! Very good! Isn’t this the best seat? Today is December 31st, New Year’s Eve. Happy New Year’s Eve. We’re in Austin right now. Since this morning, Dad has been
on the phone with the propane gas repairman. Amazingly, he found the only person
in Austin who can work starting January 1st, so the propane gas should be fixed tomorrow,
though we’re not sure yet. As for what I’m doing now,
there’s this influencer named “Joshua Weissman”. And we’re going to meet him. He’s really famous on YouTube,
so you guys might know him too. He said he wants to collaborate,
and the shoot is in three days, but he said he wants to meet up
once before the shoot. Whatever you are making
yellow corn tortillas, traditionally it’s going to be this variation. Wow. Oh, interesting! Purple. So when you, if you think about it, when you, so you have to boil them,
and soak them in the water with a little bit of lime. Like limestone. And so what that’s going to do is,
it breaks down the corn. So this type of corn is edible but… “Mommy I’m bringing this!” Okay. …it messes with your stomach so
you have to age it with the limestone. And that breaks the corn down – after it sits. And this is straight from Mexico. UMAMI! Well, it’s New Year’s Eve, so we want to
take a shower and purify our hearts. The propane gas stopped working,
so the repairman is coming tomorrow at noon. The repairman. Today, we can only use electricity again,
and the refrigerator is almost unusable. The refrigerator runs on propane,
so the frozen dumplings have become soft. – So let’s eat those dumplings today.
– “The strawberries are also getting bad.” Sutan wanted to make a shortcake, and we promised to do that,
but I was thinking we could make it in the microwave, but the microwave isn’t working
either for some reason. – “Can I help you?”
– What, you’ll help me? Thanks.
We can’t use the heater. -It might be cold tonight.
-It might be cold. Hey, today is New Year’s Eve,
and we can’t use the heater, so let’s all sleep together
and keep each other warm. That’s a good way
to spend New Year’s Eve, isn’t it? When was the last time I took a bath? I took a bath the day before yesterday,
but you guys didn’t. We couldn’t take a bath
because we fell asleep. Right, but you haven’t taken a bath
for two days, at least four days… Oh no! Can I use the excuse
that RV’s shower isn’t working? – RV’s shower isn’t working right now, that’s true.
-We change our clothes every day. – We wash our faces too.
– Wiping the body, too. Well, Sutan’s skin is a little…
is really dry and itchy right now, so We wipe her body with a cotton pad
soaked in water and apply cream every day. Sutan is clean,
but I haven’t taken a bath in five days. – You don’t have to reveal that, though.
– Well, but Sutan is clean, right? – Sutan is clean because we are wiping.
– Maybe it’s me, the one who is not clean. “So good.” Yeah! It’s clean. This shower is clean. Yeah, it smells like a hot spring! It’s been a while
since we’ve seen such a clean shower. Let’s get rid of this year’s dirt before the year ends. – The water was nice.
– “It felt amazing!” – It felt so good.
– Was it? I’m glad you guys could take a shower. -eah, I’m glad I took a shower! UMAMI! Hey, can you try the taste? I forgot the dumplings… – “We should add a little more UMAMI SAUCE.”
– Yeah, of course. “Yeah, it’s still sweet.” – Can I add some cilantro?
– “Sure.” – “Yeah, it’s delicious.”
– Wow, it’s super delicious, really delicious! Very good! Sutan decided the flavor all by yourself, right? – If we add onions to this…
– “So good! The flavor is perfect!” Sutan, can you add this? Ouch! That really hurt, didn’t it? – Concussion…
– Really? Should we cool it down? – It’s okay.
– “Don’t film this.” – You’re being filmed at the decisive moment.
– Then if we go to court, I will win. – Can I try one of these that you made?
– “Sure.” – Can I eat it?
– “Sure, eat it first.” Best guacamole, it’s super delicious! – “Dad, eat some too!”
– It’s super delicious! – “Hurry up!”
– Thanks. It’s super delicious, huh? Sutan, you’re amazing! I think I like Sutan’s guacamole the best. – It’s incredibly delicious.
– Yeah. Sutan, you’re really good at this.
She used two kinds, lime and lemon. You did it! – It’s New Year’s Eve dinner.
– “It’s cold!” Really? This is the guacamole Sutan made for us. This is Sutan who made the dressing. “This is popular, like UMAMI SAUCE.” The rest is some slightly overcooked gyoza. Plus some caviar we received as a gift
and champagne from Joshua. – Thank you so much for this year.
– Thank you for this year. Let’s all work hard together again. – “I have a headache.”
– A headache? Really? This is… – Let’s make something hot first.
– Oh no, poor girl. – “Can I lie down?”
– Yeah, sure, lie down, lie down. What should we do
if we catch a cold in America? We brought all your medicine. Yeah, we still have some Japanese medicine. – Yeah, we have plenty of medicine.
– It’s okay, you’ll get better soon. She fell asleep. Let’s put her to bed early because I’m worried. Keep an eye on that spot
to make sure it doesn’t fall off. That’s amazing! Look! What’s this? Sutan is sleeping here. Happy New Year! Happy New Year! Happy New Year! That was amazing.
I hope it doesn’t catch fire. -Well, it would catch fire and people would get hurt.
-Yeah, I thought so too. It’s hard to believe in Tokyo. I wanted to show it to Sutan. Well, it’s really warm here. We’re trying to cure Sutan’s cold
by increasing the humidity since it’s dry. We can’t use the heater right now. This is a great substitute for a heater. What a wonderful New Year’s it’s been! – Happy New Year to everyone.
– Happy New Year. Please continue to support us
this year as well. Last night, Sutan had a fever of 38°C. However, this morning
it has already dropped to 36°C. That’s good news. The gas stove is not working. The heater is also not working, so we are eating the delicious guacamole
that Sutan made yesterday with raw vegetables. – It’s so good.
– It’s amazingly delicious! I want her to make it again. – I want you to make it again too.
– Guacamole master. – Salt and acidity, right?
– Yeah, it’s perfect. I wish this was always in the fridge. When I’m driving, I’d put this here and
eat it while we’re on the way. The heating broke down,
and two days later she came down with a fever, so everyone thought it was because of the cold. It was just regular fatigue, right? – “It’s Olaf, it’s Olaf.”
– I’m glad you’re feeling better. – The power outlet…
– It just came off? It came loose when I was cleaning. It was just empty? This part was broken, you know. I thought it was no problem at all
because it was just the plastic part that came off, but because this part was broken,
he wondered if it had become empty. I saw it for the first time. This is your water here. Is it fixed now? I did something crazy;
basically, there was no propane. The meter here and below was broken, so I thought it was full and put it in by mistake. The meter isn’t fixed yet, right? Since the meter isn’t fixed,
we have to buy a new one. He explained it very carefully. He was such a nice person,
and I could ask for anything I wanted. This one has big horns, it looks strong. Oh, this one has big horns too. This one is mashed, it looks good. – “Is this okay?”
– Yeah, that’s fine. – “I’ll take my medicine.”
– Okay. “It’s bitter, you know.” Here, pans. Tongs. – This is a crucial ingredient to a great chicken sauce.
– UMAMI SAUCE! I’m telling you, when you gave it to me,
first time I tried, it was really good. Thank you. Really really good, yeah seriously. I have already used half
of the bottle you gave me. So I’m a big fan. We’re in the camera! Three to four tablespoons. It’s sauce time! I mean, absolutely stunning. It’s going to be so good. The Texas fold, that’s the secret. And I’ll tell you what it is but it’s basically
the Texas fold is a piece of the bread. And then you put all the different toppings,
so the first gets the picles, and whatever else you want in there. And you fold it like a sandwich and eat it. Wow, our first Texas barbecue. Wow, amazing! Here I go. This is incredible, so delicious! It melts in my mouth! It’s so good, isn’t it? “It’s melting in my mouth!” It’s going to get a little smoky in here pretty quickly. – Can I come in?
– Yeah! So this is actually what’s called a bark. It’s not burnt at all.
What this is, is our kosher salt and pepper. As the meat cooks, it shrinks. So what the salt and pepper does is spread it out
and it comes together like that as the meat shrinks and it binds together. What a beautiful city, Austin. – “I can sleep in a big bed today. Yay!”
– That’s great! This is for Sutan. A is for Austin. Colton House Hotel Austin, Texas! – MOTO, MOE, SUTAN.
– Cute! This is Texas beef, huh? We are here in Austin! See you tomorrow. Please come Whole Foods Market… store. Hey, you should say it properly. I’ll write down here. See you tomorrow.
Please come! “I got a haircut!” She cut hair! See you tomorrow! Bye! UMAMI Thank you! Let’s go. Good morning. Thank you! Good morning! Thank you for doing that. UMAMI! Everyone, we’re at the hotel today,
so I went shopping. There’s such a nice big oven here,
so I want to make some batch cooking. There are some leftover thinly sliced potatoes,
zucchini, and chicken from sampling. I want to use those to make a lot of meals in advance,
freeze them, pack them in the RV, and then head to Dallas. I was wondering if there was
anything I could put in the oven. Maybe this salmon container
can go in the oven? This is America! So convenient! I have a lot of cilantro,
so I’ll make cilantro mayo umayaki. Mayonnaise. Of course, Japanese mayonnaise is fine too. I think American mayonnaise is delicious too. UMAMI SAUCE. Add about 1 tablespoon with a spoon I think American mayonnaise is a little oily. Adding UMAMI SAUCE adds a lot of flavor. I think it tastes similar to Japanese mayonnaise. Cilantro is really expensive in Japan. It’s also hard to find. It’s so healthy, though. But in the US, it’s the cheapest vegetable. I didn’t know that. I’m so happy that cilantro is so cheap here,
I buy it every time I go to the supermarket. I put it in the mayonnaise I made. Dill or Italian parsley are fine too,
or any herb you like. If I were in Japan, I’d probably use shiso. It turned out like this. Organic lemons are also cheap in the US. They’re easy to get, aren’t they? In Japan, you can’t buy organic lemons
unless you go to an organic store. In the US, you can choose organic options
even at regular supermarkets. I’m a little worried about cooking
with the peel on if there are preservatives on it. In that sense, I like American supermarkets. Put it in this oven-safe pan. Place the lemon on top. How about it? It looks like something you’d
find at Whole Foods, doesn’t it? Let’s put it in the oven. I’m making a gratin using chicken thighs,
zucchini, and thinly sliced potatoes. Wow, that looks delicious! The avocado is overripe, isn’t it? It’s a little black… Moto peeled them for me. I always hide it like this
with citrus fruits and Dekopon. Yuzu juice. It’s done. Smoked citrus, avocado,
and parmesan salad. Thinly sliced potato and zucchini gratin. Oyako-don. Umayo salmon. This is teriyaki chicken with UMAMI SAUCE. Everything is made with UMAMI SAUCE. You’ll probably love it! It’s mayonnaise, after all. “So much.” You love it so much. Dad, you suddenly started
growing a beard, didn’t you? “Please say it again.” The way it’s cooked is also delicious! I just put the lemon on top. This is so delicious! Alright. Let’s take a bath, Sutan! Once you’re in an RV, there are lots of times
when you can’t take a shower for three or four days. “Why do you say that?” Because the showers at RV parks
are cold or really weak. It smells good. That? Are you going to bake it? Yeah, in the oven for about 30 minutes. It’s done! The sweet potato. Japanese sweet potato? You were saying you wanted to eat sweet potato for so long. Look at the sweet syrup. Wow, amazing. This is what I wanted to eat! What should I do, this pot is too small. Could this be the thing for pasta? Oh, maybe. Maybe not. But there wasn’t anything to grab with so it works well. I wonder what everyone cooks with if they don’t use chopsticks. These brussels sprouts are so crispy.
– Wow Sutan, it’s dinner time! The shrimp is considerable size. I wanted to eat this for so long. Moto, your back is rounded. Raise your chin, shoulders back. How’s this? New Years feeling made me crave this so bad. Mmm, so good. The gas price right now in Austin, $2.79 Sutan! It’s quite cold! Are you making a snowman? We are in… Dallas right? Sutan, where is it? Show me. So cute! UMAMI! UMAMI! Congratulations passengers, we have now safely cleared the first obstacle: snowy Dallas. Congratulations. There’s no more snow, that’s a relief. We’ve gone through snowy Dallas,
and now heading for Houston next. Let’s go Houston! “This is so warm.” Thank you, we were given these. However, before we go to Houston we were told yesterday about a public bath. So we are going there! I’m so happy. Coming to the USA, I have no complaints
because everyone we meet is so kind. Of course, all Kimonoko are kind too. All the people along the way are really thoughtful. I have no complaints but as a Japanese person,
there’s one thing I wonder about and that’s, if people in the U.S. don’t have baths
how do they remove the stress from the day. That’s the only question I have. We were having dinner with some
Japanese people living here in Dallas After we said we wanted to take a bath “A police car!” they told us about it so we’re going there. “Yeehaw!” In space, Sutan will you go to space? “Oh that made me jump.” Do you want miso soup? Shall I make it tonjiru and add bacon? “Sounds good” Use this leftover brisket for soup broth. It looks delicious. Texas miso soup. But it does have a smoky smell.
– Yeah. “It looks super fun!” Where? “Let’s hurry” What did you see Sutan? It’s a big park, let’s go. This hurts, and here. It’s all stiff. “Mom, you do it too.” I’m quite flexible. Wow, impressive! That’s amazing. My first gumbo. It’s a spicy soup, delicious. Very cool! Hey, you two. What are you up to? “We’re not doing anything.” Nothing, right? “Just making some food” In this house you can’t hide what you’re doing. “We thought because there’s no rice..” Since there’s no rice and we want some food to eat, right? Okay, so can I get dressed into my Kimono for filming? Sure! “Lunch will be this evening.” It will be this evening? Wow I’m so excited. How suspicious. “You’re not allowed to look!” Hello! Hi!
– How are you? I’m good, how are you? What’s going on? Thank you!
– Welcome We’re in Texas! Welcome to Texas. Can you cook for me with UMAMI SAUCE? Absolutely can. Come on in! That’s delicious. Approved! Looks like dancing So amazing. Look! It’s all made with UMAMI SAUCE. Wow! Looks delicious. Wow, with UMAMI SAUCE. You call it UMAMI SAUCE, I call it ‘secret weapon’. I learned a lot today. He cooked like he’s dancing. Oh, yeah! There’s a company in Austin called Made In but I’ll get another one, this one’s for you. Oh, really?! Thank you.
– My pleasure. when you’re on your travels, if you got a grill out there or a campfire or something like that, there you go. Oh, thank you! I received this gift! Good for your travels. Yes. I’m going to clean everything. You’re not. You must be so tired. Actually what I’m going to do is pack all this up for you guys. What! Okay?
– Is that okay? You can just cut it, cook it with whatever you want Oh, thank you.
– So you already got beef ready to go. He says we can take it home for dinner. Really? UMAMI! Sutan, let’s eat. Thank you. What an amazing birthday dinner it turned out to be. Thank you Sutan and dad. Happy Birthday mom. Thank you. Cheers. Sorry, you’ve just woken up. So good. It’s like we’ve come to a fancy restaurant isn’t it? He was such a kind person, Chris.
– He really was. Very nice.
– Good, isn’t it? UMAMI SAUCE goes well with steak. “It does”
– Right? So much happened this year, at 33. Any resolutions? My resolutions for 34? Around Thanksgiving, your father passed away and New Years my grandmother passed we’ve been in America so we haven’t had much time but,
to think they both won’t be there when we return. So my resolution for my 34th birthday
is to get along with my family. Be more kind. Become a kinder mom. Which do you prefer, scary mom or nice mom? “Nice mom.” I’m here because of your great grandma
and dad is here because of his dad. We really felt the importance of family, didn’t we.
– Yes. “Wait, wait a second. Turn it off.” “Not yet.’ I haven’t opened my eyes. “Put it here.” Wow! What is this? Amazing! That’s great! Happy Birthday!
– Thank you! Wow, amazing! “Mommy, sit here.” Over here? Okay. What is it? “Hurry!” “Ready…” Wow! Thank you! Thank you Sutan! “Happy Birthday!”
– Thank you. # Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you # happy birthday dear mommy, happy birthday to you Yay! Thank you so much. “Daddy do this one, mommy do this one, I’ll do this.
Daddy start.” Hold on, hold on.
– Oh I’m just blowing out two. “Fine, I’ll go first.” May we always get along in the future. Woah. Wow, amazing!
– Right? Congratulations! Thank you! Sutan, this cake is so cute. You made it for me?
– “Yes” I am 34 now. “The cream keeps disappearing.” This cake is really cute, did you come up with it? “Yes” That’s great. “We asked AI and it showed us this picture.” You asked AI how to make a cake without an oven? Sutan, you’re very honest aren’t you. “I wonder how it is inside?” Have a look. Wow. Happy birthday. You’re doing something for me again? We were trying to do it earlier. “Nice to see you again Vanessa!” Good morning! Hi, thank you for coming! Nice to meet you! What are you up to? “Don’t look, don’t take photos!” “You took it!” What is it? “Please go over there” “Tell me when, I’ll put them in front of mom when she comes.” Not yet, Sutan. “Wait a second” Okay, something is starting? MOE, go over there. Wow! Thank you! Happy Birthday! Oh, thank you so much! Sutan, thank you! # Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you,
happy birthday dear MOE, happy birthday to you Yay! Thank you Vanessa and Bryan! Thank you so much. “Here, a letter” Oh, Houston! Oh, thank you! “This is daddy, Sutan, Vanessa” Thank you. I’ll read it later, it makes me cry! UMAMI! Happy Birthday! UMAMI! Not umbrella! UMAMI! Huh, where did Sutan go? What a bridge! It’s 5pm, well done for going all day since morning. “It’s hot outside” It’s summer, isn’t it? I’ve had the AC running the whole time. What? Really? “I’ll stand on your back for you”
– Please. The perfect weight. You’ve been driving since we got to Texas, since Arizona. Close to 7 hours of driving. Really? Did I drive that much? Well, we left at 10am. That’s quite far. We were supposed to get here in 5 hours. We did stop at Buc-ees. Shall we just go all the way to the New Orleans supermarket? Wow! Almost there.

It was our very first New Year’s away from Japan. Sutan caught a cold, our gas was shut off, and it was freezing… we spent the night huddled together, just the three of us. Then came the news of my grandmother’s passing, followed by a birthday celebration. So much happened day by day — moments of joy, sadness, laughter, and reflection. Through it all, we were reminded of the most important thing: the warmth of family❤️ Thank you to everyone we met in Texas. You made it special.

  2. the chef's bbq looks so delicious and he was so kind to pack them for your trip 🙂

  3. 22:47 A hot shower usually relieves the stress. Unfortunately, o-furo in the US are smaller (as you have probably noticed) than they used to be when they are combined with showers.

  4. I am glad Sutan felt better. Moto take care of those beautiful ladies you have. Oh and a piece of good advice, always check to make sure you have propane in the tank and always keep an emergency tank as a spare.

  5. A great idea for your channel would be a cooking show where you and your daughter get together with random idols to cook their favorite foods with Umami sauce while they talk about their latest projects. You can call it Umami Idol Show.

  6. It's crazy to see y'all in Texas!! I had just had my first baby when y'all came to Houston and was so sad to miss seeing you. I hope the rest of the trip goes safely and smoothly for your family!

  7. Always love your cooking, so healthy, how we should all be eating, plus the funny moments with Sutan 😂
As parent's, perfect i think, and it shows through Sutan.

  8. Hello,

Most van and RV travelers in the US take baths or showers in the natural spring waters, camp grounds, have make shift showers or showers in their campervan or car, or get a gym pass so they can stop by the gym to workout and taking a shower after. The beaches also have free showers and some gas stations has showers I. Which most truckers will use but anyone can use it, it just cost more
