Mount Takao sightseeing and gourmet food Hachioji, Tokyo I arrived at Mount Takao, located in Hachioji City, Tokyo, on the western edge of the Kanto Plain. Takao-san Yakuo-in is a sacred place for Shugendo monks, and there is a statue of a monk at the chozuya (purification fountain). There are statues of Tengu, attendants of the principal image of the temple, Izuna Daigongen, scattered throughout the temple. It is said that “Kurikara-do” can help you make connections with various things and people. The sword is wrapped around the Kurikara dragon, which is said to destroy the three poisons of greed, anger, and ignorance. It is said that washing money in the purified water that springs from the Hachidairyuo-do Hall will bring you good fortune in money. The Niomon Gate is guarded by a red Daitengu and a blue Kotengu. Arrived at Yakuo-in Temple’s “Daihondo (Main Hall)” Goma ascetic practices are held here every day. The principal image of the deity is Izuna Daigongen, who is considered to be an incarnation of Fudo Myo-o. Mount Takao is known as a sacred mountain for Tengu faith. Tengu is said to bring good luck, ward off disasters, and bring good fortune. At the back of the main hall is the Aizen-do Hall, where Aizen Myoo is enshrined. If you go to the far right of the main hall, you will find the Daishido Hall. This is a hall that enshrines Kobo Daishi (Kukai), the founder of Yakuoin. From the main hall, climb the stone steps to the main shrine Halfway up the stairs you will find “Tobii Nawado” The main shrine is also known as “Iizuna Gongen-do” and is designated as a tangible cultural property of Tokyo. Statues of large and small tengu stand on either side of the shrine. There are many auxiliary shrines within the grounds. “Fukutoku Inari Shrine” Tengusha Shrine enshrines the Tengu, a related god of Iizuna Daigongen. There are two shrines, one large and one small, enshrined here. Geta and setta sandals are offered in prayer for healthy legs and hips. “Fuji Sengen Shrine” We keep going and finally reach the summit! It was a fine day, so Mt. Fuji looked beautiful. On the way back, I found Fukutoku Benzaiten and prayed there. Inside is a dark and narrow cave, and it is called “Ana Benten.” The powerful and skillful goshuin was written right in front of me. We safely descended the mountain and had a late lunch at “Takahashiya”. “Cold grated yam soba” There was shredded seaweed on the table, so I added it to my ramen. I also ordered a small tempura bowl. While walking after dinner, I found a shop with cute characters. I bought some Kuwazuyaki kuwanoha bean paste as a snack at Takao Sumire-an The branding illustration is the official character, Momo the flying squirrel. I also bought some “Oinari-san” as a souvenir. I also visited Takaosanrei Hikawa Shrine, located right next to Takaosanguchi Station on the Keio Line. I received a cute written goshuin. Mount Takao is a three-star tourist destination where you can enjoy the spectacular views from the summit and local delicacies using all five senses.
