Hello, this is the Drive Trip Channel. This time, we’ll introduce you to places in Kagoshima Prefecture that you’ll want to visit. Good morning! It’s the fourth day of our Kagoshima trip. Finally, it’s the last day. At the beginning of the trip, I thought there were still three days left, but now it’s already over. Time flies. Today, I’m going to visit Sengan-en Garden, the industrial heritage of the Integration Hall Project, which laid the foundation for Japan’s modernization, and the newly opened station. When I arrived during the opening event, there were more people than I expected. The roads were congested, all the parking lots were full, and the entire area felt like a festival. Apparently, the number of daily passengers at the station has exceeded twice the original estimate. The experience of being able to visit the station on the day it finally opened is something that doesn’t happen often, so I plan to enjoy it. This channel features road trips across western Japan by car. If you’re interested or would like to support us, please hit the like button and subscribe to the channel. There were so many cars that we couldn’t get in, so we had to pass by for now. First, let’s visit Sengan-en. Actually, I came here once about eight years ago. The next year, I remembered that a historical drama series had started. There weren’t many shops back then, but it’s changed a lot now. It was raining in the morning on this day. In Kagoshima, rain is called “Shimazu rain” and is considered a good omen. I received something. Inside is karukan (a type of sweet). Upon entering, you will immediately see the reverberatory furnace. They developed the cutting-edge technology to melt iron and make cannons in a short period of time using their own resources. As such, this place made a significant contribution to Japan’s modernization from the late Edo period to the Meiji era. There are three remaining reverberatory furnaces in total, located here, in Yamaguchi, and in Shizuoka. There are more shops than before. It looks delicious. You should definitely try “jambomochi.” The aroma of freshly baked mochi The sticky soy sauce and soft mochi were delicious It is now called “Sengan-en” I learned for the first time that it was formerly called “Iso Garden.” I found it strange that Google Maps listed it as “Iso-goten” instead of “Goten,” so I looked it up. I wonder why. Iso-goten was built as a villa for the Shimazu family and was used as their main residence for a time. The remaining buildings are only half the size of the original structure. The beautiful garden, which was also visited by Atsu-hime and Saigo Takamori, offers stunning views of Kinko Bay and Sakurajima, giving a sense of the grandeur of the lord’s lifestyle and the scale of the estate. I remember these stone steps. The steps are slightly curved, which left an impression on me. I’ve reached the back of the park. If you go further, there’s a cat shrine. It was called “Nekogami-sha.” It makes a sound when you blow or suck on it. It is said to be the prototype of the harmonica. It is played by blowing into reeds made of reeds. It is said to be the prototype of the Western oboe. The tube is thick, so a large amount of air is needed to blow into it. The atmosphere at Sen’gan-en was special and different from usual. If you want to see everything, it will probably take about an hour. An old Western-style building appears in the distance. They imported spinning machines from England and established Japan’s first Western-style spinning mill. This building was constructed as a residence for the seven British engineers who were invited to provide technical guidance. At that time, textiles could not be mass-produced by hand. By establishing Japan’s first spinning factory and producing large quantities, the aim was to mass-produce items such as military uniforms, ship sails, and equipment. Technicians were invited from overseas to provide guidance, and housing was built for them here. Ah, thank you. I think Japanese armor is the coolest armor in the world. It was a simple station designed with the landscape in mind. It’s not a very big station, but it’s very close to the sea, and it’s a place I’d like to visit just to see the view. Finally, “Shoko Shuseikan.” Originally a metalworking factory, it is now the oldest stone-built Western-style machine factory in Japan. Sengan-en, Shuseikan, and Ijin-kan Each had a different “face” of the Shimazu family. At Sengakuen, you can feel the aesthetic sense and authority of the Shimazu family. In the “palace,” one can experience the dignity and sophistication of a feudal lord from the Edo period. At the Ijinkan, the international sensibility and flexibility were outstanding. Welcoming Westerners and adopting a stance of accepting human resources without prejudice toward other cultures was something that only a leader who had experience in overseas trade could do, and I think that’s why they had such a keen sense of various things. The Integration Hall. Its foresight and execution stand out. It was filled with many firsts in Japan, and I was truly impressed by their understanding of what needed to be done to protect the country and their ability to execute it. Let’s buy some souvenirs at Sakurajima SA and head home. After that, I got too tired, so I went to a hot spring. This is “Kazoku-yu Yamabushi” in Yamaga City. This is said to be the birthplace of family baths. Other hot springs were full, so I searched around and found this one This retro feel is very relaxing, isn’t it? Rooms range from 1,700 yen to 1,900 yen. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The only thing in the room is a hairdryer. Thank you Thank you This hot spring was great. It’s perfect for families. This time, we only introduced a small part of the vast Kagoshima Prefecture. What I felt during this trip was that the meat, fish, vegetables, and all the food were simply delicious. Sakurajima, Kinko Bay, and the Kirishima Mountains are all beautiful examples of the region’s magnificent nature. The history from the Middle Ages to the Meiji period is also very interesting. That’s how I felt. Next, I want to visit Ibusuki, Makurazaki, and Chiran on the Satsuma Peninsula, Sata Misaki and Kanoya on the Osumi Peninsula, and there are many other places I want to visit. I really enjoyed the four days. I will definitely visit again. Please keep up the good work. See you on my next trip. Bye for now.
