Number 14: Castelo de Tomar Located in the same complex as 
the Convent of Christ, Castelo de Tomar was built in 1160 by the Knights Templar

views of Tomar and the surrounding landscape. The central area, now a peaceful

The Pegões Aqueduct is an impressive 3.7-mile (6-km) structure built between 1593 and 
1613 to provide water to the Convent of Christ. Designed by Italian architect Filipe Terzi, 
it carried water from four springs to sustain the convent and its farmland.
The aqueduct is especially impressive where it spans the steep Pegões 
Valley, with its double-decker arches reaching up to 100 feet (30 m) high.
You can walk along the top for breathtaking views of the surrounding hills or stay on the 
lower paths if you prefer to avoid heights. Although it is accessible by car, a 40-minute 
walk from Tomar’s center to the site adds another layer of exploration to your visit.

chamber made of five large granite slabs, accessed through a narrow corridor.
You can walk through the site and view the remnants of a circular altar and burial 
chambers, which once held about 90 individuals. The area has recently been cleared for easier 
access, and there are informative plaques to guide your visit.

the town’s famous treats and regional dishes. Fatias de Tomar is a dessert made from egg yolks
