Oniki Town, Amakusa City Explanation of the sunset at Oniki and Kuroishi Oniki Town in Amakusa City is located on the western edge of the prefecture, on the western tip of Amakusa Shimo Island. Until around 1964, this town had three coal mines and contributed greatly to the economic development of Amakusa as a mining town. Oniki Town is also known for its beautiful sunsets over the East China Sea. The city of Amakusa wanted to promote the region by showcasing the beautiful sunsets of its hometown, so it selected eight particularly beautiful spots and named them the “Amakusa Eight Sunset Views.” Today, I would like to introduce you to the “Sunset at Oniki and Kuroishi,” which is one of the Eight Sunset Views of Amakusa and has also been selected as one of the Top 100 Sunsets in Japan. The west coast of Amakusa Shimo Island is a spot dotted with crystal clear waters, beautiful capes formed by nature, and islands. The sight of the boat returning to the harbor, leaving ripples on the calm sea, and the vibrant sunset sinking into the ocean, coupled with the beautiful silhouettes of the islands and capes in the distance, is an exceptional sight. Today, I came to Oniki Town in Amakusa City to see the “Sunset at Oniki and Kuroishi.” It was unfortunate that there were a lot of clouds, but on the other hand it made for a beautiful sunset of a different kind.
