【25年初夏の軽井沢おとな旅】中国飯店 麗晶|黒柳徹子ミュージアム|離山房|石の教会|トンボの湯|川上庵本店

It’s an unbearably hot summer— so let’s quickly escape to a cool retreat. Japan is safe and peaceful right now, so even on weekdays, there are lots of people. The bus stop is at the north exit of the station. The famous Chinese restaurant chain opened its Karuizawa branch in August 2024. Since it’s my first trip to Karuizawa, I decided to treat myself to a luxurious lunch to make it memorable. I’m torn between a few courses. “I’m tempted by a course that’s a bit pricey, so I’m conflicted… “But in the end, I decided to go for it… I chose the Shito course (7,700 yen). Five kinds of appetizers to start. Prawns and young corn in Shaoxing wine-flavored cream sauce. I was impressed by the size of the shrimp. Personally, this is the number one menu of the day. I want to be able to understand the depth of the taste more. Freshly roasted Peking duck—finally, we meet. Freshly roasted Peking duck. Rich flavors hit the brain instantly.” The crispy texture was thanks to the hidden flavor. Sweet and sour pork with Chinese yam in black vinegar sauce. Everything was delicious and perfectly portioned, so I finished it all with ease. Stir-fried Moroccan green beans and makomodake (wild rice stem). Fried rice with dried scallop and egg white. The smell and texture are just perfect. Almond tofu for dessert. So jiggly and refreshing. In the end, eating what you Taking the plunge was totally worth it— it was bliss from start to finish. A new museum that just opened on July 5. It features the dazzling collection of Tetsuko Kuroyanagi, best known for “Totto-chan: The Little Girl at the Window.” Exquisite kimonos and delicate glass paper art—simply mesmerizing. The merch is so good, I wanted everything. (More on that later. There’s a bus stop right in front, but buses don’t come very often. So I decided to walk to the café, enjoying the lush early-summer greenery along the way. Suddenly, a charming wagashi café appeared—what a delightful surprise. Apparently, it used to be a popular spot in Minami-Aoyama. This café was once visited by the family of John Lennon and Yoko Ono. Since I’m here, I had to try the same flavors in this very place. special blueberry juice For Karuizawa, the humidity was unusually high (according to my taxi driver). Walked, sweated, then cooled down with a refreshing juice. The air felt so clean—it was a truly healthy moment. Now let me show you the key case I fell in love with at the museum. It actually cost more than the Chinese restaurant lunch, but I went for it anyway. I also got a pouch with one of Tetsuko-san’s iconic portraits. All the goods were high quality and super cute. As a kid, Totto-chan and Anne of Green Gables were my soulmates. I’d always wanted to see this stone church— it looks like a giant Ohmu from Nausicaä. Stone, light, greenery, water, and wood. The entire church is made only of natural materials. It feels pure and sacred inside. The harmony between the church and nature is complete. It made me feel that humans are part of nature, too. I was drawn to the bench at the entrance, not just for how it looked, but because it was incredibly comfortable. Just a short walk from the church is the Hoshino Resorts area. Karuizawa’s iconic spots like Sawamura and Kawakamian. We took a break by the river breeze— sparkling sunlight streaming through the trees. Next time, I’d love to try flying squirrel watching in the forest. It’s open to adults too, apparently. It really works my legs. Now I know how a hamster on a wheel must feel. A gym, suddenly appearing in the middle of the woods. I was almost overwhelmed by the solid weight of real wood. But this was my actual destination— an open-air bath and sauna in harmony with the forest and river. So refreshing. The last bus from the Hoshino area to Karuizawa Station is at 6:10 PM. I got hungry, so we got off at Nakakaruizawa. I was the third in line—decided to wait. (It took about 30 minutes.) Karuizawa Yona Yona Draft Beer Marinated Salad with Chunky Vegetables and Octopus Deep-fried Lotus Root Stuffed with Shrimp There’s plenty of time to book a Shinkansen back to Tokyo. Once I chose a train, I booked it online with Ekinet. (So convenient!) Seiro Soba This Karuizawa trip turned out to be an unexpected splurge. Hopefully, it sparks just enough motivation to work a little harder for the next one. Where should I go next? Every trip inspires another.
