Costa Brava Beach Walk 🌊 EmpĂșries to L’Escala, Spain | 4K Walking Tour

Welcome back, explorers! Today we’re walking a beautiful coastal trail from EmpĂșries to L’Escala. This 6km route is easy, mostly flat, and lined with wide sandy beaches. It’s even great for biking! EmpĂșries, and Alt EmpordĂ  (region), is perfect for relaxing, doing sports, or camping by the sea. The northern beaches up to Roses are perfect for kitesurfing, thanks to their steady winds and open shores. Today we’ll follow the coast to Sant MartĂ d’EmpĂșries, a charming stone town full of seagulls and swallows. Then we’ll pass beaches near ancient Greek and Roman ruins, ending in L’Escala — famous across Catalonia for its delicious anchovies. EmpĂșries Beach lies just in front of the charming village of Sant MartĂ d’EmpĂșries. Separated from Moll Grec Beach by a breakwater, its prime location makes it a favorite spot for sun and swimming. The beach is about 300 meters long and 40 meters wide, with fine sand and convenient services like a beachfront restaurant and nearby parking. After relaxing here, you can easily explore the town’s historic walls, castle, and church. Now we’re heading to the small village of Sant MartĂ d’EmpĂșries to spot some local wildlife and explore its charming streets. Sant MartĂ d’EmpĂșries is part of L’Escala and sits right next to the ancient ruins of EmpĂșries (or EmpĂČrion). It’s been inhabited since the 6th century BC, when Greeks from Massalia (modern-day Marseille) first settled here. Sant MartĂ d’ EmpĂșries Church (1507) The town has a few restaurants, but I recommend saving your appetite for L’Escala, known for better quality food—plus you can enjoy a classic vermut and some delicious anchovies there. This is the other side of EmpĂșries Beach — a bit more crowded, with beach bars (chiringuitos) and easier access. We’re now at the Greek Dock — a beach where you can swim alongside a 2,000-year-old Hellenic breakwater. This ancient stone structure marks the historic arrival of the Greeks and Romans to the Iberian Peninsula. This is Les Muscleres Beach, known for its clear waters, soft sand, and the pine trees that line the shore. Just across from the ruins of EmpĂșries, this beach hides traces of history even underwater — perfect for snorkeling. The beach is split into two areas: Muscleres Grans and Muscleres Petites. And you can walk here easily via the coastal path that connects Sant MartĂ d’EmpĂșries with L’Escala. Now on a paved bike lane — perfect for beach-hopping or getting around from nearby campsites. Portitxol Beach is just off the seaside path from EmpĂșries, near the Archaeology Museum — the same route once used by Greeks and Romans to enter the Iberian Peninsula. The beach has a stunning setting: to the right, a wooden staircase leads to a lookout with views over the Bay of Roses. Along the way, you’ll spot the famous Arch of Portitxol, a unique rock formation loved by photographers. Cala del Pedrigolet is a small, sheltered cove nestled between Portitxol and Rec del MolĂ beaches. It’s the only pebble beach along the EmpĂșries coast and can be reached from the coastal path near the Coves lookout. Protected from the northern tramuntana wind, it’s a peaceful spot and perfect for snorkeling. Platja del Rec is the first of the EmpĂșries beaches, with fine sand, dunes, rocky areas, and rich marine life. Surrounded by pine trees and linked by a beautiful coastal path, it’s perfect for walking, jogging, or cycling. A section of the beach is dog-friendly too. Located between L’Escala’s town center and the first EmpĂșries beaches, this spot is known for its charming old fishermen’s huts and year-round moored boats. Surrounded by cliffs, it’s accessible from Mar d’en Manassa or steps from l’Oberta. The beach has flat stones, but locals often sunbathe on nearby rocks. There are no services on the beach, but restaurants and shops are close by. Also known as “Beach of Boats,” this beach is right in the center of L’Escala. Before the port was built in 1962, it wasn’t suitable for swimming because fishing boats were moored here. This is the town’s lively heart, bustling year-round. It hosts popular events like the Habaneras concerts, the Salt Festival (Festa de la Sal), and the Greek and Roman Fair of the Mediterranean Triumvirate. Surrounded by a lively promenade with bars and restaurants, the beach has coarse sand and is much loved by locals. If you enjoyed the walk, give it a like and leave a comment.
