A Local Tour in Shibamata, Tokyo – History, Temple & River Fish Cuisine!【東京・柴又】寅さんの町で味わう歴史と絶品グルメ
hi everyone today I’m taking you to Shiba Mata a nostalgic town in Katsushika Tokyo it takes about 45 minutes by train from Tokyo station to Shiba Mata station this area developed around Taishakuten Temple founded in the early Edeto period the Edeto River lies behind with old rural scenery still intact because of its deep history and preserved townscape it was designated a national important cultural landscape in 2018 let’s take a stroll through this charming old town our tour starts at Sheiba Mada Station this place is famous as the setting for the It’s Tough Being a Man movie series it ran from 1969 to 1995 with a total of 48 films it holds the Guinness World Record for the longest film series with one lead actor right outside the station there’s a statue of Torisson the main character [Music] step outside and you’ll see the lively Taiishaku 10en shopping street you’ll find traditional snacks like kusa dango rice crackers and pickles this path has led to the temple for over 100 years [Music] at the end of the street is Shiba Mata Da Shakaten its official name is Da Koji Temple founded in 1629 it enshrines Daishakaten a guardian deity in Buddhism you can take off your shoes and go inside but please note that photography is prohibited inside the main hall from this point forward after passing through the main hall you will come to a corridor which says there is a charge from this point forward please buy a ticket and for 400 yen you can check out the amazing sculpture gallery in the back let’s go take a look let’s start with the wooden carvings on the walls they depict stories from the Lotus Sutra and are incredibly detailed 10 artisans created them between 1922 and 1934 there are explanations in both Japanese and English you’ll be amazed by their power and precision next we’re stopping by Yamamoto Te just a short walk away it was built in the late Thai to early Showa period it blends traditional Japanese and Western architectural styles entry is 100 yen and you can enjoy matcha and sweets the garden was ranked third in Japan in 2024 by a US magazine relaxing in a quiet tatami room with that view is something special to finish off we visit Kawacia a famous riverfish restaurant it’s been serving food since the 1770s over 250 years ago while waiting for the order to arrive let me explain a little about carp in Japan carp used to be served shoguns in emperors and was also served on special occasions such as celebrations and festive occasions in order to be tasty the fish must be alive until just before cooking which is why the restaurant has a fish tank like this one i tried koi arai and koi koku koi arai is sliced carp rinsed in hot water and chilled it’s usually served with vinegared miso it’s light slightly chewy and really refreshing qui koku is a hearty soup made with carp and red miso of course you can drink it like miso soup however the fish has a lot of bones so please be careful both dishes reflect the wisdom and techniques of traditional Japanese cuisine and they were absolutely delicious so how was your trip through Sheiba today we explored some of its most iconic sites but next time we’ll take a deeper look at some hidden gems thanks for watching and see you in the next video
