桜咲く江戸城外濠を歩く🌸鳥と鉄道と春の記憶🌸東京お花見散歩01[東京・市ヶ谷~飯田橋]
We have arrived at Shin-mitsuke, on the outer moat of Edo Castle, on the border between Shinjuku and Chiyoda wards. A mitsuke is a castle gate where guards were stationed during the Edo period. Once you pass through mitsuke, you enter the outer wall of Edo Castle. As the “new” in the name suggests, Shin-mitsuke is a new road built in 1893 (around the 26th year of the Meiji era). At Edo Castle’s Thirty-six Mitsuke, the next Mitsuke was Ushigome Mitsuke, near the current Iidabashi Station. To improve convenience, a new road was built halfway between Ichigaya and Iidabashi. Today, most of the outer moat has been filled in, and the outer moat from Ichigaya to Iidabashi has become a valuable urban space. Many trees, including cherry blossoms, are planted along the moat. The other day, the cherry blossoms bloomed, so I came here to go for a walk to see the cherry blossoms. Today, I walked from the Shin-mitsuke intersection towards Ichigaya Station, then from Ichigaya-mitsuke to the castle town of Chiyoda Ward. From there, I walked through Gaien Park towards Iidabashi. The cherry blossoms in Tokyo are expected to bloom on March 24th, and are expected to be in full bloom today, March 30th, but there are still buds and shoots around here, They haven’t fully bloomed yet. They’re just starting to bloom. But it’s still to come. I can hear some kind of call. I thought I heard some bird calls, but I saw a lot of ducks. They’re shovelers. They’re migratory birds that come to Japan in the winter. The ones with green heads are males, and the ones all brown are females. They’re often seen in the outer moat at this time of year. And above all, this is the most eye-catching sight. Several mallards are circling around a single point. Apparently, they are creating a water current with rotational force and eating the zooplankton that has gathered there. I’ve seen mother ducks and their ducklings walking before, but this was the first time I’d seen them circling around. Mallards are characterized by their wide beaks. The edge of the beak has a brush-like structure, which seems to filter out zooplankton. It must be resting after feeding early in the morning. It’s a fishing pond. It’s rare to find a fishing pond in the city. It can be seen from the platform of JR Ichigaya Station across from the fishing pond, and it’s a place you often see on TV. There are no people around because it’s before opening time, but it gets lively around noon. Now, let’s finally cross the outer moat and enter the castle grounds and Chiyoda Ward. This main street is Yasukuni-dori. Yasukuni-dori, which continues from Kabukicho in Shinjuku, enters the inside of the moat here. Around 1960, the Toden, or streetcar, also ran around here. We have arrived in front of JR Ichigaya Station. This is where the Ichigaya Mitsuke gate was located during the Edo period. It seems that the square-shaped castle gate had a stern atmosphere. The cherry blossoms on Yasukuni-dori are also beautiful. That’s right. The cherry blossom-lined Yasukuni-dori is a pleasant driving route. This time, instead of heading to Yasukuni-dori, we head to Sotobori Park. This is a spot where you can see JR Ichigaya Station, the fishing pond, and the outer moat. On the other side of the outer moat is the place we just walked through. In a few more days, the cherry blossoms over there will be in full bloom. This is exactly where the mallards were sunbathing. The outer moat from Ichigaya Mitsuke to Shin Mitsuke is called Shin Mitsuke Moat. The cherry blossoms have increased considerably. You could say that the main part starts from here. Ah, there are birds here. They are pecking at the cherry blossoms. It’s a brown-eared bulbul. The brown-eared bulbul also comes from somewhere during the cherry blossom season to suck the nectar from the cherry blossoms. It seems humans aren’t the only ones looking forward to the cherry blossoms. It’s still early in the morning, so the cherry blossom viewing parties haven’t started yet, but people are starting to reserve spots. There are tents too. Maybe they’ve been waiting since the night before. There are fewer people around in the early morning, which is nice. It’s good to live nearby. There’s also a garbage station. Let’s all use the roads cleanly. I can see the bridge over the JR Chuo Line. It’s the Shinmitsuke Bridge. On the other side of this bridge is the Shinmitsuke intersection, today’s starting point, and the embankment-like road is a new road built in the Meiji era. You can also see the trains clearly. This is a quadruple track section where the orange JR Chuo Line rapid trains and the yellow JR Chuo-Sobu Line local trains run. It’s fascinating to watch them running side by side or coming one after the other. Now, let’s cross the road. There’s a tall building. This is Hosei University’s Boissonade Tower. It’s 27 stories tall and quite eye-catching. The view from the upper floors looks good too. The outer moat from Shinmitsuke to Iidabashi is called Ushigome Moat. Sometimes, people mistake this outer moat for the Kanda River. The Kanda River that flows around Ochanomizu also serves as an outer moat, but please note that the outer moat around here is not the Kanda River. This is where the Kanda River flows. There is an artificial island floating in the outer moat. I wonder what that is. It looks like they’re rebuilding the stone retaining wall. I’d love to have a cherry blossom viewing party on that artificial island. I heard you can rent a boat at the Canal Cafe restaurant on the Iidabashi side of Ushigome Moat. I found a public toilet! The location of the public toilet is important when you’re cherry blossom viewing. I forgot to mention that there is a public toilet at the back of the children’s park near Ichigaya Station, where Yasukuni-dori and Sotobori Park fork. I discovered a fountain-style drinking fountain. While I’m here, I’ll check out the fountain that everyone loves! It brings back memories. It’s been a while since I’ve seen a fountain-style water supply. This area is full of spring flowers, such as rape blossoms. A wonderful spring walk. JR Iidabashi Station is now in sight. In 2020, the Iidabashi Station platform was moved to the west side, and is now visible from Gaien Park. The previous platform was located on a sharp curve with a radius of 300 meters, and the large gap between the platform and the train was a problem. The platform relocation work has now been completed, the west exit station building of Iidabashi Station has been renewed, and there are now spots with great views. Our walk through Sotobori Park is about to come to an end. The cherry blossoms on the other side are also beautiful. That’s Iidabashi Sakura Terrace. Let’s go there too. Sakura Terrace is home to cafes and restaurants. Many shops have terrace seating, making it the perfect spot to enjoy a meal. As the name Sakura Terrace suggests, the cherry blossoms are magnificent. Well, this video is almost over. I regret that the cherry blossoms were not in full bloom yet, but I will try again next time. I was able to see the cherry blossoms just starting to bloom, It was a precious experience that I couldn’t feel when they were in full bloom! After this, I would like to go to Chidorigafuchi, one of the most famous cherry blossom spots in Japan, but that will be in the next video. That’s all for now. Please subscribe and like our channel.
