It was founded in 1186, but was moved to its current location in 1468. This main hall was built in 1716. It survived the fires of war. It’s a rare find. The glass is still in place so I guess they’ve renovated it. It’s a beautiful temple. It looks like it has a lot of gold. There is a three-story pagoda. Chigyoin Temple Jidayubori Park It recreates the rural scenery that was once seen in Setagaya Ward. Mansions from the late Edo period to the early Meiji period have been restored. These irrigation canals must have irrigated the rice fields. Apparently they were used in the countryside until the early Showa period. The reason we feel soothed when we see rural landscapes is because of the DNA of the Japanese, an agricultural people. It’s hard to believe that this is a scene from Setagaya Ward, Tokyo. 東京・世田谷。住宅街を抜けて歩いていくと、思いがけず静かな田園の気配が立ち上がった。最初に訪れたのは慶元寺。創建は1186年、現在の場所に移されたのは1468年。本堂は戦火を逃れて現存する1716年の建築。手入れされた庭には三重塔がそびえ、木々の影がゆるやかに揺れていた。さらに歩くと、次大夫堀公園にたどり着く。江戸から明治にかけての屋敷や用水路が復元されており、かつてこの地にあった農村の暮らしが、静かに息をしている。昭和初期まで田が広がっていたという。風に揺れる草、澄んだ水、耳を澄ませば聞こえてくる昔の暮らし。ここが東京であることを、ふと忘れそうになる。静かな寺と、眠っていた田園の記憶。その境界を、今日もゆっくり歩いてみる。
