新潟県糸魚川市にある親不知（おやしらず）の断崖絶壁は、日本海にそそり立つ雄大な景観で知られる場所です。ここは、飛騨山脈（北アルプス）が直接日本海に落ち込む地点に位置し、高さ300～400mにも及ぶ断崖が約15kmにわたって続いています。
親不知の断崖絶壁の絶景の特徴
圧巻のスケールと険しさ: 日本アルプスの山塊がそのまま海に沈み込んだような地形は、非常にダイナミックで迫力があります。切り立った崖と、その下に広がる日本海の荒々しい波が織りなす景観は、まさに「天険（てんけん）」と称されるにふさわしいものです。
歴史的な交通の難所: 古くから親不知は、越後国（新潟県）と越中国（富山県）を結ぶ北陸道の最大の難所として知られてきました。当時は、断崖の下にあるわずかな海岸線を波間を見計らって駆け抜けるしかなく、大波に飲まれて命を落とす旅人も少なくなかったといいます。このことから「親は子を、子は親を顧みる余裕がない」という意味で「親不知」という地名が付けられたという説もあります。
四世代にわたる道: 現在、親不知には、かつての難所を物語る旧北陸道、明治時代に開通した国道8号線、そして日本海上を走る北陸自動車道という、時代と共に進化してきた「道」が重層的に存在しています。特に北陸自動車道は、まるで海上を走っているかのような感覚になるほど海に近く、その建設技術の高さにも驚かされます。
多様な展望ポイント: 親不知の絶景を堪能できる場所はいくつかあります。
親不知記念広場・親不知コミュニティロード: 国道8号線沿いにある広場で、展望台からは断崖絶壁と海を一望できます。ここから続く「親不知コミュニティロード」は、かつての国道8号線の一部を遊歩道として整備したもので、往時の道の険しさを感じながら散策できます。途中には、旧北陸本線のレンガトンネルも残されており、内部を歩くこともできます。
道の駅 親不知ピアパーク: 親不知ICからほど近い場所にある道の駅で、ここからも雄大な日本海の景色を眺めることができます。世界一のブロンズ製海亀像「ミリオン」がシンボルで、新鮮な海の幸も楽しめます。
観光のポイント
ドライブ: 北陸自動車道や国道8号線を走ると、その地形の険しさと、海に迫るダイナミックな景観を体感できます。特に高速道路から見る景色は圧巻です。
散策: 親不知コミュニティロードを歩き、かつての旅人が経験したであろう困難に思いを馳せるのもおすすめです。
夕日: 日本海に沈む夕日は格別で、断崖絶壁とのコントラストがさらに美しい景観を作り出します。
ヒスイ探し: 糸魚川市はヒスイの産地としても有名で、海岸でヒスイを探すこともできます。

The cliffs of Oyashirazu in Itoigawa City, Niigata Prefecture, are known for their majestic scenery towering over the Sea of Japan. This is where the Hida Mountains (Northern Alps) drop directly into the Sea of Japan, and the cliffs reach a height of 300 to 400 meters and stretch for about 15 km.
Characteristics of the spectacular scenery of the cliffs of Oyashirazu
Impressive scale and ruggedness: The terrain, which looks as if the mountain range of the Japanese Alps has sunk directly into the sea, is very dynamic and impressive. The landscape created by the steep cliffs and the rough waves of the Sea of Japan spreading out below them is truly worthy of being called “naturally formidable”.
Historical transportation hazard: Since ancient times, Oyashirazu has been known as the most difficult point on the Hokuriku Road, which connects Echigo Province (Niigata Prefecture) and Etchu Province (Toyama Prefecture). Back then, travelers had no choice but to wait for the break in the waves to cross the narrow coastline below the cliffs, and many were swept away by the big waves and lost their lives. Some say that the place name “Oyashirazu” was given to Oyashirazu because of this, meaning “parents cannot look after their children, and children cannot look after their parents.”
Roads spanning four generations: Currently, Oyashirazu is home to multiple “roads” that have evolved over time, including the old Hokuriku Road, which tells of the difficult times of the past, National Route 8, which opened in the Meiji era, and the Hokuriku Expressway, which runs over the Sea of Japan. The Hokuriku Expressway in particular is so close to the sea that it feels as if you are driving on the sea, and the high level of construction technology is also amazing.
Various viewpoints: There are several places where you can enjoy the spectacular views of Oyashirazu.
Oyashirazu Memorial Square/Oyashirazu Community Road: This square is located along National Route 8, and from the observation deck you can see the cliffs and the sea. The Oyashirazu Community Road that continues from here is a promenade that was developed on part of the former National Route 8, and you can walk while feeling the ruggedness of the road in the past. Along the way, you can also walk through the brick tunnel of the old Hokuriku Main Line.
Oyashirazu Pier Park Roadside Station: This roadside station is located close to Oyashirazu IC, and you can enjoy the magnificent view of the Sea of Japan from here. The symbol of the station is the world’s largest bronze sea turtle statue, “Million,” and you can also enjoy fresh seafood.
Sightseeing Points
Drive: Driving on the Hokuriku Expressway and National Route 8, you can experience the ruggedness of the terrain and the dynamic scenery approaching the sea. The view from the highway is particularly impressive.
Walk: It is also recommended to walk along the Oyashirazu Community Road and think about the difficulties that travelers of the past must have experienced.
Sunset: The sunset over the Sea of Japan is exceptional, and the contrast with the cliffs creates an even more beautiful view.
Jade hunting: Itoigawa City is famous as a jade producing area, and you can go jade hunting on the coast.
The Oyashirazu Cliffs are a unique scenic spot where you can simultaneously feel the overwhelming beauty of nature and the history of ancient people battling nature to carve out a path for themselves.
