have you ever wondered what it’s like to hike the ancient nakasendo Trail in Japan our adventure begins with a journey from either Kyoto or Tokio to nakatsugawa here we embark on the world-renowned shinkansen or bullet train to ngoya at nakatsugawa we board a local bus for a short ride to mome the starting point of our Trek the day’s hike sees us walking over the Momi pass to tsumago one of the most beautifully preserved post towns on the nakasendo trail as the sun dips below The Horizon we find ourselves in a family run minshuku in Tumo or the nearby Hamlet of otum Mago the evening unfolds with a home-cooked Japanese dinner prepared with love and an authentic touch after dinner the yucata Gown provided by our hosts invites us to take a quiet evening stroll through the Tranquil Village streets as the night falls the magic of the nakasendo trail starts to reveal itself ready for a challenge the journey from sumo to nojiri is the longest but arguably the the most rewarding on this leg of our adventure we’re traversing a variety of terrain from small valleys to Lush forests of bamboo and Japanese Cedar this part of the trail offers some of the least developed scenery on the tour a true Testament to the untouched beauty of Japan’s Countryside but the hike doesn’t end in nojiri from here we hop on a train to kiso Fukushima where a lovely hot spring roken awaits us nestled in a Serene Valley above the town the roken offers a tranquil Retreat after a day of exploration this traditional Japanese Inn has both indoor and outdoor hot spring baths perfect for soothing tired muscles and unwinding in the peaceful surroundings after a long day of hiking a relaxing soak in the hot spring baths is well deserved soak in the Ambiance recharge your spirit and get ready for the next day’s Adventure our adventure continues as we cross the Tory path to reach the evocative Village of narai after a brief ride from kiso Fukushima to yabuhara we we set off on foot the scenic beauty of the Tory pass unfolding before us the trail winds through verdant Landscapes the air filled with the sense of the land as we make our way towards naray naray a village Frozen in Time greets us with its charm the narrow streets lined with traditional wooden houses seem to Echo the stories of travelers from centuries past as we explore this captivating Village every corner seems to whisper a new secret a new tale of the ancient nakasendo Trail our day ends at a family run in nestled in the heart of the village our gracious hosts welcome us with warm Smiles their Hospitality steeped in generations of tradition and as we sit down to a home-cooked Japanese dinner the flavors of the land fill our senses the perfect end to a day of exploration after the long hikes a shorter walk to the town of kiso hirasawa offers a pleasant change this quaint little town is famous for its lacquerware a traditional Japanese art form the streets are lined with small shops each displaying beautifully crafted table wear and furniture that are a testament to the town’s Rich artistic Heritage it’s a sight to behold and an opportunity to take home a piece of Japanese Artistry from kiso hirasawa we board a train for our onward Journey the options are Karu isawa or kamoro both offering lovely ends with a real sense of history and fine Japanese baths there’s also an option to take a detour to Matsumoto home to a famous castle that offers a glimpse into Japan’s feudal past as we conclude our day we look forward to a wonderful dinner at our final overnight stay it’s been a day of short walks beautiful Artistry an anticipation of what the next day’s Adventure will bring our final day on the nakasendo trail takes us from karui zawa to yokokawa as morning breaks we embark on our last hike our Spirits high and our minds filled with the memories of the past 4 days the trail today day is a gentle one allowing us to soak in the serenity of the nature around us one last time the whispering breezes rustling leaves and the distant calls of birds are our companions on this final leg of the journey our hike concludes at yokokawa a peaceful Town nestled amidst mountains but the adventure isn’t over yet from here we board a train that takes us from the Tranquil Landscapes of yokokawa to the vibrant city of Tokyo the contrast is striking yet it serves as a perfect end to our diverse Journey as we leave the trail behind and step into the bustling city of Tokyo we carry with us the memories of an unforgettable Journey Through the ancient nakasendo Trail

🔥 Trip Highlights:

Day 1: Kick off your journey from Tokyo/Kyoto on the Shinkansen, hike from Magome to Tsumago, and experience traditional Japanese hospitality in a cozy Minshuku.
🥾 Walking distance: 8.3km / 5.2 miles.
🌁 Elevation gain: 326m / 1069 feet of ascent and 430m / 1410 feet of descent.
⏳ The time required: About 3 hours.

Day 2: Embrace the scenic beauty from Tsumago to Nojiri (or Nagiso), and unwind in the hot-spring baths of a Ryokan in Kiso-Fukushima.
🥾 Walking distance: 18.4km / 11.5 miles.
🌁 Elevation gain: 723m / 2275 feet of ascent and 644m /112 feet of descent.
⏳ The time required: About 6 hours We offer a shorter alternative of 1 hour (3.7km / 2.3 miles). You can choose which option you prefer on the day – no need to decide in advance!

Day 3: Traverse from Yabuhara to Narai over the Torii pass, with an optional hike to a local waterfall, culminating in another sumptuous Minshuku stay.
🥾 Walking distance: 6.2km / 3.9 miles.
🌁 Elevation gain: 344m / 1128 feet of ascent and 270m / 885 feet of descent.
⏳ The time required: About 3 hours.
🌿 In Kiso-Fukushima, we offer an optional, fairly strenuous, circular walk to a local waterfall. The circular walk is 7km / 4.3 miles with 632m / 2075 feet of ascent, 637m / 2090 feet of descent and takes 2-3 hours. You can take this walk in the morning, before heading onwards to Yabuhara.

Day 4: Stroll to Kiso-Hirasawa, known for exquisite lacquerware, and savor a night in historic inns after exploring Matsumoto’s famous castle.
🥾 Walking distance: 2.5km / 1.6 miles.
🌁 Elevation gain: negligible ascent and descent.
⏳ The time required: About 1 hour.

Day 5: Complete your trek from Karuizawa to Yokokawa, witnessing untouched landscapes, before a comfortable Shinkansen ride back to Tokyo.
