東京・銀座最古の建物:奥野ビル(1932年)|ジャパンウォーキングツアーズ
hey welcome to the video welcome to the channel my name is Corey today we’re going to be doing a tour of this old building behind me this is the Okono building here in Ginsza so the Okono building here uh was built in 1933 actually it’s the one on the left that was built first this is a very typical kind of modernist architecture um at the time of its construction this was probably one of the most modern buildings in the Tokyo area uh or Ginsa area yeah it used to be um you know advertised as like a luxury apartment back then so uh now we look at this and we think it’s you know very outdated very Shawa era very late Taiisho era kind of style but um yeah very cool to see that this is still standing and uh a lot of these units have been turned into art galleries uh a few office spaces and then kind of down in the bottom area here in the first floor and then below are antique stores and a clothing store yeah let’s go yeah so here’s uh an antique store on the first floor we got the Okuno Biru yeah so Okuno is the family name uh the owner last name was Okuno there used to be a like a machine parts factory here and uh that building was destroyed in 1923 after the great KTO earthquake that destroyed much of Tokyo and um you know for a while he there was nothing here and then he decided to capitalize on uh this kind of just empty lot and he decided to build some apartments very cool you can see the kind of like small balcony area it’s an area so small that you can’t actually sit on it but there’s uh I believe some dirt and so people have planted uh different trees and whatnot into there so we’re going to be going into uh the left side here the older part the right side of the building was built I believe one year later in the same exact style and then they merged the two buildings together in the center so we’ll we’ll see two sets of stairs but they’re actually connected so here in the lobby uh very old style we’ve got some old beautiful tile work here but uh they have the old mailboxes uh these are not like super super old like as old as the building is but uh they have the different gallery spaces offices and stuff like that so you can see um you know what the artist is making in those different units and uh some of them have open galleries and you can come check them out they have a directory here up to the seventh floor so you can see all the different gallery names this is the old uh office like this very old place they have a little tiny window there and uh an interesting feature is this manually operated door for the elevator we will be taking that in just a minute but I just wanted to show you kind of the lobby area some of the stairs so this is um you know that we’re we’re in the stairwell of the first building but there’s a window that connects right over to the other building yeah um let’s go up while we can we’ll call the elevator look at that coming down from the seventh floor so we’ll go up to the seventh floor and then we’ll uh walk down each floor and just investigate the hallways and just show you the the old vibes very cool so it’s here and this is a manually controlled so you have to open it with your hand like this open and then use the button here open that small space then you have to close this make sure the latches shut and then slide this let’s go to the side yeah very cool it’s one of the last um I guess manually controlled door elevators in Tokyo area i’ve only seen this once uh in Italy in Italia so very cool to see it here yeah the elevator itself is you know a little bit modern but the door is not so it’s kind of cool that they kept that but yeah we’re up here on the seventh floor we’ve arrived now we open the door you got to be careful with this little latch thing here so you don’t like pinch your finger okay and then shut it and then shut that for the next person and then I guess eventually someone will call it and then it’ll go down but we are here on the seventh floor so they do have some stairs that goes up to the roof oh someone called it bye yeah so um each of these units uh they are being rented by people um mainly for like office space or like artist studio space or gallery space to like display their artwork and stuff yeah so uh you you can’t take these metal stairs but yeah it goes up to the roof very old stairwell the uh it’s hard to tell but the floor is very uneven they covered it with this kind of like laminate kind of material but if you remove this it’ probably be bare cement and uh very uneven like if you if you put some marbles on the ground they’d be rolling all over the place looks like there’s a little community kind of sink area here if we look out the window we’re just kind of between the buildings really nothing to see and then they do have a kind of more modern restroom uh women’s with the orange and men’s with the blue yeah there’s a modern well modernish bed but yeah very old stall here if you guys uh have any questions or comments please leave them down below and don’t forget to like the video and subscribe if you haven’t old spaces in here yeah so this is connecting to that we were now in the second building um here’s their stairwell check out this fire hose box it’s so old yeah these look like uh just people’s offices antique jewelry repair so this floor seems very kind of modernized and there’s a studio space or something over there uh let’s go down we’ll kind of zigzag we’ll go like down this building’s floor one and then the next one over it’s so funny to see it look how old this window is you got to watch your head here um this is very low i’m 6 feet tall um this is like at my mouth level you can see there’s all these dents here it looks like people hit it over the years many many times so I got to like bend my head yeah very old exposed floor some old units here this is the sixth floor hand painted chicken paint long doula yeah that’s a dead end this is interesting this is um a space here these are uh double door inside like sliding glass doors these are all old apartments that were converted into the spaces a lot of the artists will have their kind of information about the space um so this one looks like you can kind of you know set up rent the place and show off your own artwork and I noticed this old is this a is this a radiator what is this old that looks crazy a very old wooden ladder but yeah lots of the wiring across the top more artist bases here random stuff painted on the door which is kind of interesting kazuki wow and there’s a like a wooden door here with wood panels and then a giant padlock yeah look at these hallways very cool yeah so you can see people are coming and going that guy just left got more spaces uh this looks like a architect’s office maybe kind of hard to see there’s a men’s room here i’m going to show you real quick here’s another gallery space cool anybody in here hello oh my god old urinal old piping yeah very very old look at the floor it’s all like chipped away yeah so it’s very cool that they’re preserving this history this old building in Tokyo um artists have been holding these units as you know galleries and studios for decades decades and decades so cool yeah these stairs a little bit more dark they’re uh kind of more this like darker is it granite feels like it’s granite all original and this uh banister here this handrail solid solid wood so yeah this building um you know it was built a long time ago but it’s fully reinforced concrete it was built to withstand earthquakes ooh here’s a beautiful space it looks like a sculpture that uses plants in their sculpture very cool it is uh extremely humid in here as you can imagine there’s really no air flow no windows yeah uh I am feeling some wind coming from this vent here which is for this unit 505 very cool now look at this just completely exposed layers and layers of concrete the corner unit what does this say no nukes how appropriate for for what’s going on right now in the world but look at this hallway that’s a vibe huh wow um luckily I have my trusty fan to keep me h cool cuz it is super humid yeah so that is um the second building this is the first building you can see the dividing line this is where the two buildings were built into each other there’s some interesting gaps reservation required for this gallery mi Amore Gallery amore Ginsza Gallery it’s interesting they painted the door silver it’s kind of a silver color yeah and I’ve noticed uh there’s this kind of weird like brush stroke kind of pattern on all of the walls which is probably not original but I wonder how old like when did they make this like in the 70s the 80s yeah just got the exposed wires and everything um these doors are beautiful this is a What do they do it looks like they do stuffed animals oh antique dolls like teddy bears and some other antiques too interesting wow creepy yeah it is um Monday it’s a little after 11:00 a.m and as I’m walking around here you can see I’m kind of like the only one here yeah look at look at the the walk uh walking path you can see so many people walked here this old railing it’s seen decades decades and decades of wear and tear yeah let’s go down got to watch our step here and of course watch our head over here there’s some space office very cool it’s another gallery yes so if you’re ever in the area this is definitely like you know something cool to see it doesn’t take a long time to get here or um explore it you kind of just walk through here and just see what’s up they’re like offices sloan Ranger men’s vintage wear interesting oh there goes the elevator some people going up so this Yeah we’re on the fourth floor this is so cool um yeah what do you guys think and if you’re watching this video have you been here before whoa this door has like these cool It looks like rivets but it’s not rivets just some nut andbolt action yeah looking up the stairs very ancient yeah so there’s something very interesting on the third floor that I wanted to mention so there was um a woman she was born in 1909 uh Sudasan and she used to live here she moved into this building not too long after it was opened and she uh ran a hair salon out of her apartment apartment 306 and um she lived here until she was 100 years old and passed away uh oh yeah it’s over there oh there’s gallery space here we’ll we’ll look at that in just a second but yeah she lived in a unit 306 and she ran her hair salon out of here it was just called Suda Hair Salon or something um yeah here’s a picture of the old sign it’s kind of dark in here but um yeah she passed away in 2009 at the year of 100 in this unit and um they wanted to preserve this place like this is the original door like her door for decades decades and decades and decades and so now uh they turned it into this project project 306 and uh they do have an English explanation about the history of this as well but um yeah uh people can come here here’s a QR code yeah and uh people can come here and they’ll have uh you know different um exhibitions displayed in here and sometimes they’ll even use the original um hair salon space with the old mirrors on the wall uh to hold like hair salon events and stuff so it’s very cool that they preserved it because they wanted to keep it the way it was um you know kind of the old Shawwa style wow this is so creepy yeah so um yeah she did pass away in here and uh you know much respect to her we want to pass that positivity positive energy to that unit it’s an interesting gallery space over here it looks like leather working yeah leather leather brand cool no umbrellas no drinks makes sense because of water look at everything’s just kind of worn down you can see how many footsteps have gone into that unit 306 i can hear other people walking around and someone said it is hot that’s Japanese for hot very humid oh this is not a gallery this door frame is interesting looks like a sculptures studio space um okay let’s go down oh yeah there’s one thing I wanted to mention about this space i totally forgot to mention it um they only have this open on every 6th of the month so unfortunately today is not June 6th uh but yeah if you want to come here and see inside of this place uh check their website with that QR code that I showed earlier and uh you can see what’s coming up and um yeah it’ll be on the 6th of each month someone put like a little pine cone and wood thing there super humid it’s Union Jackpack this is 215 wow this place got like old spray painted decorations this is uh antique jewelry and watch antiques Eden jewelry and watch it’s closed looks like they have fairy lights kind of draped all around and then there’s a pos here it’s so small you’re not getting any natural light let’s see what’s more over here yeah most of these places look closed for now i’m not sure what time like the artists will come to these spaces i don’t know if like today is Oh here what is this this one specifically angel Collection opening hours 12 a.m to 700 p.m wait midnight closed Wednesday appointment only Tuesday so it’s not open today on Monday business customers only no just looking very strict but very interesting yeah what do they got here antiques look at that antique lace fan that’s cool and I’m using a fan what what a coincidence old spam can randomly on top of this it is hot sorry I keep saying that but the humidity in here is wild there’s some plants here this is interesting space wow look at this sign kind of old kind of uh like a snack or bar that’s what they call little tiny dive bars in Japan snack kind of reminds me of that art space this is closed closed and just looking at the frame too it’s like all rusty a lot to see it’s so cool to see this thing operating what is this 210 TV what is this a picture of looks like a bunch of rich people looking in the reflection of like a jewelry store window maybe does anyone recognize that photo it almost looked like they were showing off like you know like the Hope Diamond and everyone came to that window to look at it there’s a little nook here uh from 12:00 so yeah I came here at 11 so maybe that’s the thing a lot of the artists are not here yet uh they haven’t opened up their space this is just so cool we got to just like take in these vibes for a second let’s go down here so yeah we are now back on the first floor back on the first floor peeling paint everywhere uh this studio is very cool called Makoto and this artist uh makes uh glass frames custom glass frames out of like wood and I guess like other materials selected glasses and I like this light too by the way they have a very cool space in there lots of plants dark wood i like it oh he’s the artist cool yeah so now we’re back on the first floor um before we go down here let’s go see what wraps around this corner here uh there’s an old safe wow look at this safe that’s so cool it’s got like the lacquer paint but it’s all like chipped away from years and years of just exposure says strong safe and on top of here they’ve got all the different little uh postcards and stuff for people’s uh little gallery shows very cool oh is that like a little little black cat doing laundry that’s awesome what unit is this one this one is unit 202 ah they’re upstairs they’re closed uh that would be cool if we could see some of this stuff one uh one day you know i don’t know if they would allow filming inside but um yeah it would be cool gallery G2 that’s interesting it looks like uh just melted metal that they just kind of let cool down and then hung it on the outside there oh what is this i see some Oh this is a calendar it’s got cats is this their art it might be looks like it’s just a gallery space but uh very cool um yeah I mentioned before in the beginning when we first entered like this this kind of tile work very kind of shoa era style like they had this kind of bluish green hue very old yeah let’s go see what’s down in the basement whoa these stairs this railing is all just cement with the tiling on it so it feels totally different from uh upstairs whoa it’s so humid down here salon de Antique oh it’s cooler down here but it is so humid wow these double doors it’s the vault uh it looks like this is a clothing store and then in here antique glassware very cool but oh my god this this is definitely the most humid place in the entire building it’s the coolest by temperature cuz we’re underground but the humidity level is 107 million% right now like can you see my arm it’s so I’m like I can’t evaporate my sweat oh my god that is like a sauna but a cold sauna if that makes any sense okay um I thought that was going to connect over to basement one over here but it’s separate so let’s go down this way it’s probably going to be humid i bet I’ve got my fan ready whoa whoa is this the service room for the building kind of looks like it this is all like the the electrical stuff generator and you know all the power stuff for the building uh maybe plumbing as well i don’t know what this is but it feels like it’s a bathroom door this is kind of a huge open space i see some doors there’s padlocks on them yeah it’s pretty humid in here but not as humid as the other one there’s a sink that probably is the bathroom yeah use the bathroom come out wash your hands that makes sense maybe some kind of utility closet over here it’s crooked wow i think that’s it did we see it all i think we did all the textures very cool kind of curious what’s in that office but of course we can’t go in there and uh this is the antique store that we saw from the first floor like outside unfortunately we are out now can we see in there lots of delicate looking things but yeah uh I think that’s it very cool space huh yeah let’s go out oh I pushed but it literally says pull i am dumb so yeah I kind of want to look at the exterior just a little bit more and then we’ll wrap up the video but uh Oh it looks like the owner just arrived there they got the door propped open yeah it’s a sunny day um yeah what is this place shoe repair and sundries union Works looks kind of like antique shop but also kind of like a bespoke type of shoe repair place and if we see all the different windows you can see the the brick framing around there and then I believe on the third floor I think that unit is uh 306 that window and that window is uh project 306 the one with the old lady who had the salon yeah so here it is in all its glory the lovely Ginsa Okuno building a very uh historic landmark here in uh Tokyo very cool well thank you so much for coming along with me on this very amazing tour of this architecturally important building in Tokyo the Ginsa Okono building if you guys want directions to this place I’ll have the Google Map link down below in the description box uh make sure you leave some comments and questions about this place i’m glad to hear what you guys uh have to say or what you One of the oldest modern buildings in Tokyo and the oldest building in Ginza is the Okuno Building. It’s actually two buildings built together, the left side built in 1932 and the right side in 1934. It was built in the Modernist style of the time with reinforced concrete to withstand earthquakes.
It was considered a “luxury” apartment building back in the day and was home to many residents for many decades. Now, it has been repurposed as artist galleries and studios, as well as a few office spaces.
It features one of the only manually controlled elevator doors in Tokyo (that I know of) still in use.
It’s located very close to Tokyo Station and Yurakucho Station, as well as the Ginza area. If you’re looking for something interesting and unique to see in Tokyo, you should drop by and check it out! It’s easy to find and also doesn’t take a lot of time to explore from top to bottom.

Just a heads up, the Project 306 gallery space is only open every 6th of the month.

Have you been here before? What do you think about this building? Let me know below! Thanks for watching!
Artist spaces? This will be good 🙂
pretty cool but i feel like would be like a hideo kojima scary place at night tho
Cool old building I would most definitely live there
It's nice to more distinct buildings like that, I do worry how long it'll remain given the earthquake laws.
That postcard of the cat doing laundry is fantastic 🙂
Fascinating tour Cory, thanks.
very nice tour Cory! You could be a tourist guide in your area :). You do this so good, everytime I watch it. Your voice is polite and calm. Wishing you a nice day overthere, greetings from the Netherlands.
probably the building is very cold in winter!
