In the last episode of our trip to New Zealand we drove a camper van to Castle Hill, the filming location of The Chronicles of Narnia and to the stargazing town, Lake Tekapo as well as the blue milk lake, Lake Pukaki The scenery was absolutely stunning Now, we’ve arrived at the second major stop in New Zealand Mount Cook We are going to hike on a beautiful trail and take exhilarating helicopter ride to hike the Tasman Glacier Let’s check out what’s fun to do in New Zealand Let’s go Mount Cook has an altitude of 3,724 meters It is the highest mountain in New Zealand It also has many filming locations for The Chronicles of Narnia and The Lord of the Rings Mount Cook is ranked as the fifth most beautiful mountain in the world The next best place to visit in New Zealand is New Zealand’s largest glacier which is 27 kilometers long 4 kilometers wide and 600 meters thick Tasman Glacier We are going to hike on the glacier and find the legendary blue ice cave Today, we’ve signed up for a Klook day tour we will take a helicopter straight to the top of Tasman Glacier This is actually the activity I’ve been most excited about for my trip to New Zealand Unfortunately, when we came last week it was canceled because of heavy fog But since we really wanted to hike on Tasman glacier so after it was canceled last week, we rescheduled it qucikly to another day The sky is clear today and there are helicopters on standby It seems that God doesn’t want me to save NZD$ 800 We can do it! Let’s go to the second floor to check in This is where we’re going today Tasman Glacier Heli Hike After checking in, we are going to change the snow boots they provide They also provide free wool socks and crampons which are necessary for walking on the snow The guide will bring them up to the glacier for us They also provide free waterproof jacket Before departure, the staff will explain the safety instructions We are about to board the helicopter Wow, we are seating next to the captain Hi~ thank you After boarding, we must fasten seat belt and put on headphones The pilot is super friendly he gave us a great explanation of the scenery and terrain around us during the flight After about a 10-minute flight we arrive at this stunning snowy world Looking down at the glacier from the sky is just breathtaking As the helicopter lands, it kicks up all the snow from the ground The guide is already crouched nearby, ready to pick us up Once we get off the helicopter we have to crouch down quickly because the helicopter blades are dangerous We just finished putting on our crampons and grabbing our trekking poles Now we’re ready to start our glacier hike This is actually the first tour group in two weeks so the snow is super thick right now We haven’t stepped on the glacier yet because the snow is so deep It’s crazy thick thick so the guide told us to follow closely behind and step in the footprints of the person ahead It’s the safest way because we’re not sure if the ground beneath the snow is stable Since the snow reflects UV rays we’re wearing sunglasses to protect our eyes Due to global warming the glacier has dropped about 300 meters compared to before and it’s melting faster as it gets hotter in the lower areas When the glacier melts There’s nothing on this side of the canyon to support the rocks so they start falling and that’s why we see some rocks around here The guide said that there used to be an ice cave here but after days of snow and rain it’s now completely covered The weather in the mountains is always changing so every time you visit, it looks different Every glacier hike feels like a new experience it’s so cool Even the guide doesn’t know what kind of scenery we will encounter this time The guide is really attentive always checking back to make sure everyone’s keeping up and he even helps us take photos at each stop It’s awesome He also said there’s no drinking water here but we can eat snow Wow! the snow is super fluffy Let’s try it … It seems like I am eating shaved ice actually pretty tasty I’ll have another bite so soft and smooth Wow, this snow is amazing Wow It’s my first time eating glacier snow Now, we’re about to enter The legendary ice cave This ice cave feels like real ice Wow The color of the cave changes depending on the light and the thickness of the ice creating all these shades of blue It’s incredible We’re exiting the cave now It’s so spectacular After arriving at the ice cave the guide explained how it was formed and gave us plenty of time to take photos It’s such a rare sight that it feels like a once-in-a-lifetime memory especially since glaciers are disappearing This experience is priceless you must try glacier heli hike and exploring ice caves if you come to New Zealand It’s such a magical adventure so fantastic and the air on the mountain is very fresh During the second half of our hike we moved into an area with more varied terrain and the guide assists us through the tougher sections We crossed a crevasse thank you course welcome Awesome guide Walking on the glacier is incredible with all the different landscapes and terrains we can feel the wonders of nature at everywhere It’s so beautiful here It’s just a shame that the recent rain and snow have changed the terrain a lot so we couldn’t see as many ice caves today for safety reasons Every place is so beautiful Wow a big piece of snow Oh my god Let me take another bite it’s delicious yummy free ice The guide even made some tools to help us climb Wow A lot of people come to New Zealand to visit the lower-altitude glaciers on the West Coast like Franz Josef Glacier and Fox Glacier But because they’re lower in altitude you don’t get the same breathtaking views surrounded by mountains like you do here Plus, the helicopter rides over there are much shorter only about half the time of the one we took today Moreover, If I drove seven hours to the West Coast and then found out the hike was canceled I would have no chance to postponed it for a week I might really have to cancel it So I highly recommend the Tasman Heli Hike One of the people in our group said it’s way more worth it than skydiving and because the slope isn’t too steep it’s actually a pretty easy hike Highly recommended for all ages We were lucky to witness a natural avalanche That’s a good one Very lucky to see that Before leaving, make sure to experience the ice spray from the helicopter Time flies when you’re having fun Seats will be changed on the return flight so everyone gets a chance to sit in the front or by the window It’s thoughtful We and our new friends really enjoyed this experience The return flight was even more exciting because the captain took us through the snowy mountains for a closer view of their magnificence It felt like being in a fairyland I really don’t want to leave this place This glacier is so beautiful Just the flight experience alone was worth it Our Heli hike tour has come to an end It was incredible We had planned so many days of our New Zealand’s trip and then arranged a flexible itinerary of about two days so we could reschedule activities impacted by the weather I highly recommend the Tasman Glacier Heli Hike If you come to New Zealand, you have to try it How to participate in the Tasman Glacier Heli Hike? Cook I highly recommend you to walk the Hooker Valley Trail From the trailhead it takes about 5 minutes to reach the Alpine Memorial The Alpine Memorial commemorates the dozens of climbers who have died on the mountain It has a pointed shape and is located at a higher point where you can see the parking lot It is surrounded by beautiful scenery You will pass through three bridges We’re now at the first one where you can see the river below Each bridge has a limit of 20 people Behind the river are the beautiful snow-covered mountains The views along the way are absolutely stunning It’s gorgeous We’ve been walking and taking photos for about an hour and now we can see the second bridge Crossing the second bridge means we’re halfway through After passing the second bridge the road below us will become the boardwalk I’m walking on now In addition to being elevated The raised boardwalk looks more extended It looks elegant and peaceful It looks great even if you take photos looking back After crossing the third bridge it’s about a 10-15 minute walk to reach the Hooker Lake There are many different sizes icebergs on the surface of the Hooker Lake Hooker Lake is a proglacial lake which was originally formed by the melting of Hooker Glacier On the calm lake you can see floating icebergs and in the distance there are beautiful mountain peaks covered with white snow It’s very beautiful and very peaceful here I really recommend everyone to walk the Hooker Valley Track There are also some alpine animals here I don’t know what kind of birds they are After a hike on the trail Seeing the beautiful scenery It’s all worth it The path along the way isn’t very steep Only after crossing the third bridge There’s a slight incline I even saw someone experiencing this trail by pushing a stroller and carrying a baby To get to the Hooker Valley Track You can navigate to Hooker Valley Track Now we’ve arrived at the hotel we’re staying in today The most famous hotel at Mt. Cook was super cold This time we decided to come back for glacier heli hike And stay in a hotel To see if we can get a good night’s sleep The Hermitage Hotel’s impressive feature is that It has large floor-to-ceiling windows You can see Mt. Aoraki from both the restaurant and the rooms Even though the indoor space of the hotel isn’t very big It’s already the most luxurious hotel On Mt. Cook with four stars And its balcony Gives you a view of Mt. Cook That’s its biggest selling point If you want to have a warm night at Mt. Cook enjoying the view of Mt. Cook on bed The Hermitage Hotel is definitely your top choice But compared to other places we’ve been to I think this mountain hotel Is kind of expensive NZD$ 374 For a small room like this The bathroom Has a dry-wet separation A small shower area A small toilet space Hmm NZD$ 374 Maybe because it’s on the mountain I will be more tolerant But I definitely recommend coming to Mt. Cook It’s absolutely stunning everyone must visit Mt. Cook If you don’t have high expectations for accommodation You can stay at a holiday park like we did or other cheaper hotels Here’s the restaurant for breakfast and dinne with large floor-to-ceiling windows and sunlight shining in You can see Mt. Cook outside Dining here is a great experience How to get to the Hermitage Hotel? Just navigate Google Maps to The Hermitage Hotel It takes about 3.5 hours from Mount Cook to Queenstown It’s recommended to take a break in Wanaka along the way Wanaka is known as one of the most beautiful lakeside towns in New Zealand’s South Island It’s located at the southern end of New Zealand’s fourth-largest lake, Lake Wanaka Today, we’re going to try a very famous bakery here in Wanaka Pembroke Patisserie we’re sitting next to the entrance The vibe is really nice Along with the brick wall and chairs We ordered three things today This is the hot chocolate and a lemon tart Oh almost dropped it and a salted caramel donut Let’s try them out This lemon tart has a lemon base at the bottom paired with lemon curd and there’s a bit of cream in the middle The crust of the lemon tart is super crispy and paired with the sweet and sour lemon curd But if you just eat the cream alone you might find it a bit too sweet because they give quite a lot of cream If you don’t like too sweet you can scoop out some cream and eat more of the lemon at the bottom This salted caramel donut look at all the filling inside it’s overflowing The donut has a dense texture The amount of powdered sugar is just right It’s not overly sweet and with some warm hot chocolate on a cold winter day outdoors, it’s quite nice I just checked the card payment It’s shocking It only cost NZD$20 for two pastries and one drink It’s a good deal We ordered two items and a drink at Astro Cafe in Mount Cook a few days ago for NZD$34 I feel like this might be cheaper than in Taiwan Some cafes in Taiwan with nice decor and delicate items might even be more expensive than this I highly recommend you try Pembroke Patisserie They’re also famous for their croissants but we have eaten too much already You can try it by yourself To get to this tasty bakery You can navigate to Pembroke Patisserie The next must-visit spot in New Zealand is That Wanaka Tree The Lonely Tree stands peacefully on Lake Wanaka It’s also known as the loneliest tree in the world Because it’s the only tree here it looks really peaceful and undisturbed The lonely and carefree tree with the stunning lake scenery it is so beautiful It attracts photographers and tourists from all over the world When you visit Wanaka, you can take a walk by the shore looking at the snow-capped mountains in the distance and That Wanaka Tree with the lake of Wanaka It really brings a sense of calm to your heart Highly recommend coming to see it You can also visit when the weather’s good head to the Wanaka Wharf and walk on the white sand beach Enjoy a leisurely afternoon it’s so relaxing And when the sunlight hits you it feels really warm It’s much warmer here compared to Lake Tekapo and Mount Cook There are some boats you can rent a boat or go SUP on Lake Wanaka Lake Wanaka has a really comfortable and relaxing vibe You’ll even see locals walking by the lake playing fetch with their adorable dogs It’s such a nice and peaceful scene You can get here by navigating to That Wanaka Tree If you want to take photos of the pier and beach navigate to Wanaka Lakefront Tonight, we’re going to have a restaurant with great atmosphere in Wanaka It’s an Italian restaurant Francesca They have outdoor seating in a glass house and indoor space Let’s go in and check it out The dining environment of this Italian restaurant is really nice The restaurant is packed with people Tonight, we ordered Naples-style pasta and a giant Margherita pizza for candlelight dinner Let’s try it Wow, the pizza is huge pizza is a thin-crust handmade pizza topped with basil, tomatoes, and mozzarella cheese The crust is crispy It tastes really good The Neapolitan pasta is also amazing You can taste a bit of crunch But it costs NZD$ 37 for one bowl which I think is a bit expensive Pizza is a more budget-friendly option For dessert, we got Tiramisu Tiramisu is very delicious It’s super soft and fluffy And the cake part is even lighter than the Tiramisu you find in Taiwan so it tastes more melt-in-the-mouth and has no bitter taste at all with a slight wine aroma It’s a fantastic dessert It’s a restaurant with great atmosphere and food If you want to go to this Italian restaurant you can navigate Francesca Wanaka After dinner we’re going to get some dessert Today we’re going to eat Charlie Brown a well-known French crepe food truck in Wanaka You can see the steam rising from it now It’s hot we ordered the white chocolate blueberry flavor It’s great to eat something hot like this on a cold day The crepe is very thin and really soft with white chocolate and blueberry filling inside It tastes refreshing It’s not too sweet and tastes great You should come and try it It is a famous local shop You can navigate to Charlie Brown Crepes The next must-see attraction in New Zealand is The Wanaka Lavender Farm Wanaka Lavender Farm’s entrance fee isn’t expensive It only costs NZD$7 about USD$ 4.5 We also bought some feed for NZD$3 You can choose to feed sheep or alpacas In summer this place is full of purple lavender Unfortunately, it’s winter now so the lavender isn’t in full bloom Otherwise, it would be really beautiful here But there are still plenty of animals to feed It’s an alpaca It dropped He’s so strong Let me just use my hand to feed it so itchy His legs can’t stay still so itchy I think I might scare him This one is gentle I want to pet him too His fur feels like sheep’s wool These little lambs are so cute They’re all wearing little white vests However, if we buy alpaca feed we can’t give it to the lambs It’s not good for them At the lavender farm you can not only feed alpacas and lambs but also see a lot of other animals such as miniature horses donkeys goats sheep and many other animals at the back of the farm you can see snowy mountains behind Wanaka There aren’t many people since we are in the off-season so we can feed alpacas with a great place without people which is very good to take pictures In a few days, we will go to Akaroa There’s even no any fence where you can take photos beside the alpacas You’ll be even closer to them so you have to be more careful We’re practicing here first There will be a lot of fragrance oils with lavender scents in the ticket center As soon as you walk in you can smell the fragrant lavender scent There is also a section selling Honey They also have famous lavender ice cream that you can buy here There are various jams and water provided You can take a rest here If you come during the blooming season you’ll see beautiful lavender just like on their website To get to the Wanaka Lavender Farm you can navigate to Wanaka Lavender farm We just finished walking around the Wanaka wharf and now it’s time for lunch We’re going to eat Big Fig Big Fig has a really simple ordering process They have large, medium, and small plates No matter the size of the plate you can choose one type of meat For a small plate, you choose three sides four for a medium plate and five for a large plate we picked 5 dishes today The dishes are quite fresh You can get a lot of dietary fiber If you don’t cook by yourself you don’t get as many veggies This meal is probably the one which we’ve had the most veggies in New Zealand The salad is really good But as for the rice this long grain rice taste not good Taiwanese rice is better The roasted potatoes are not bad the beef taste good It’s soft and tender Overall, it was a pretty healthy meal If you want to eat something healthy you can navigate to Big Fig Wanaka We stayed in Wanaka for two days However, Wanaka’s most famous trail Roys Peak takes 7 hours round trip and we have just hiked the Hooker Valley Track at Mount Cook so we come to a nearby hidden attraction Lake Hawea This lake is not very big but the lake view is very beautiful you can see it’s surrounded by mountains on three sides The lake even reflects the mountains There are not as many houses and boats as there are in Wanaka Here’s pure nature There is nothing here but only a bench and a tree It’s really quiet and the scenery is stunning amazing especially when we came here around 5 o’clock about an hour before sunset The light was perfect to take awesome photos If you have time and you’re staying in Wanaka for two nights you can actually visit this unpopular attraction The peacefulness of Lake Hawea is so relaxing Sitting on the bench and just looking at the beautiful mountains and lake is such a treat To capture a stunning view of Lake Hawea you can navigate to Wedding Tree Alright, now we’re running out of gas so we come to the gas station Because New Zealand is sparsely populated you’ll definitely need to do self-service refueling Let me show you how to refuel First of all, find this machine Then press “1” for fuel After pressing 1 it’ll ask you to pick a pump You need to choose which pump you’re going to use I’m going to use pump 7 so I press 7 Okay, seven OK then insert your card You just insert your card After following the steps it’ll ask for your PIN The PIN code is the Personal Identification Number This PIN is super important Before you come to New Zealand you have to go to the bank and enable the PIN then you can enter the PIN code Alright, now we’re done and can take the card And it says we’re ready now So we can start fueling up Last time when we were in the U.S. we couldn’t use the machine because we didn’t enable the PIN So we had to ask someone to help us fuel up After opening the fuel cap our campervan uses diesel So I take the diesel nozzle If you drive a sedan you can choose 91 or 95 You can freely choose what you need Once you plug it in, just like in the U.S. press the fuel button There’s a little clip here lock it in place It’ll keep fueling automatically Once it’s full, it’ll stop by itself Now it’s calculating the cost The most important thing is to remember to bring several credit cards to avoid getting stuck without fuel in remote areas And always remember to call the bank to activate your PIN That way, you can enter the PIN to refuel After finishing the fueling I go back to the machine and press 2 to get the receipt It will ask you to insert the same card you used to pay for the fuel After inserting it it authorizes the transaction then you can take your card out and the receipt will print right here you can take it away That’s it You’re done!
