【大分】湯布院・二本の葦束|プライベート感100%!貸切温泉×古民家の極上宿が最高だった
Hello! Welcome to Mary Channel! This time, I visited Yufuin in Oita Prefecture I stayed at “Oyado Nihon no Ashitaba”! The staff kindly parked our car for us and helped with our luggage. The path leading to the entrance was so charming and atmospheric. When we checked in at 3 PM, it wasn’t crowded and the process was smooth with no wait. The antique furniture had a rich, classic feel that really suited the old Japanese house vibe. The 13 private villas are spread out over a huge 4,500-tsubo (around 15,000 square meters) property. A friendly staff member showed us to our room, pointing out the various buildings and spots around the property as we walked. They even took a photo of us along the way. We stayed in a detached villa called “Shunrin-an.” A traditional thatched cottage Surrounded by the pleasant scent of incense floor plan he living room with a traditional sunken hearth (irori) is… It has the atmosphere of a traditional Japanese home. The ceiling is stained by smoke from the irori hearth, and smoke-stained bamboo (susudake) is used. There are as many as three delicious-looking baked goods! The living room is equipped with a basic sink. Drinks in the refrigerator are free of charge. The floor heating keeps it warm. (Please note that the irori hearth is not functional.) On the right side of the engawa (veranda), there is a 10-tatami mat Japanese-style room. They had already prepared the futons. In the closet, there were a haori (a traditional Japanese hip- or thigh-length jacket), a yukata (a casual cotton robe), and a samue (comfortable work clothes typically worn by monks or artisans). During winter, you need to wear a yukata with two haori jackets to stay warm. The samue felt very comfortable. The power strip equipped with USB ports was very handy. I really liked this mirror, so I did some research, and… It cost 50,000 yen (about 322 USD), so I decided not to buy it. Toward the back, you’ll find a sink and a toilet. There were amenities prepared for both men and women. The pouch is made of durable material, so I’ll probably be able to use it again. The bathroom space was quite roomy. Since the outdoor bath is in a detached area, you have to go outside once to reach it. The changing area was clean and had plenty of space to get dressed. The open-air bath at Shunrin-an was a stone bath. It uses a natural hot spring with continuously flowing water (gensen kakenagashi). There is a washing area, but it might be cold to wash here during winter. I changed into a yukata and headed to the private bath. There was a traditional Japanese paper umbrella (bangasa), which I found quite rare, so I opened it and walked around a bit. The detached building on this property is… Structures that include relocated traditional Japanese houses and Western-style mansions, Since each room, including the Japanese-style houses, has a different atmosphere, It makes you want to stay in the other rooms as well. It’s an ideal accommodation for anyone who wants to enjoy a private and quiet space. All the onsen here are available for private use, You can use them as long as no one else is using them. First, we headed to Bath No. 7. Bath No. 7 is the only one located a bit farther away. Towels were provided at each of the private baths. They have coffee milk and other drinks, which is a nice treat after a bath. Here’s a quick look at Baths 1 through 6. Bath No. 1 Bath No. 2 Bath No. 3 Bath No. 5 Bath No. 6 You can eat onsen eggs whenever you want. Baths 1 to 6 feature semi-open-air baths. Only Bath No. 7 is an indoor bath. My personal favorite was Bath No. 5. At dusk, the lights come on, creating a lovely atmosphere… Dinner will be served at ‘Chisouan. This building is a relocated traditional house from Niigata that is 150 years old. A private room with a wonderful atmosphere. Purple sweet potato tofu (a soft tofu-like dessert made from purple sweet potatoes) Appetizer assortment Kabosu yellowtail、Red seabream、Seared cutlassfish Tempura of red seabream milt (shirako)、Herb-fried mozzarella cheese Oita Wagyu sirloin steak Seared blowfish with red shiso jelly Local kuruma shrimp and hanabiratake mushroom in savory broth Bungo chicken hot pot (from Oita Prefecture) Steamed crab paste cake (Beni-sho crab) Japanese pickles Blood orange、Oita strawberries、Madeleine with chocolate After the meal, we returned to the main building with the front desk. Upstairs, you’ll find a small shop and a guest lounge. You’ll find pottery and other goods specially selected by the inn. The Arita porcelain drain cover in the room’s washbasin, as well as small Arita plates, are also available for purchase. Right next to the shop is a guest lounge where you can enjoy coffee, tea, and more. You can have your drinks in the lounge, elsewhere on the first floor, or in your room. Our reserved time for the public bath is coming up, so… We head up the long staircase. Unlike the other private baths, only the large open-air bath… It’s reservation-based, and you set your time at check-in. Reservation times fill up in the order of check-in, so… Arriving early at the inn increases your chances of booking your preferred time. The changing room is quite spacious. The other private baths had electric heaters, but… There wasn’t one here, and it was really cold while changing. It’s amazing that this spacious open-air bath is private! (30-minute time slots) When we woke up, a light layer of snow had fallen. We heard it was the first snowfall of the season. We’re heading to the large open-air bath before breakfast. Each group can use the large open-air bath up to two times. The first slot is booked at check-in, and the second can be reserved by calling the front desk after 5:30 PM on the same day. By calling the front desk at 5:30 PM, we were able to reserve the 7:30 AM slot before breakfast. We recommend booking early to avoid overlapping with meal times. It was too dark to see at night, but… You can see the famous Mount Yufu straight ahead. The morning sun creates a magical atmosphere. There’s also another private bath called the Bamboo Grove Bath, but… Since it was a bit far and too cold, we gave up on using it. The breakfast venue is the same as where we had dinner. At check-in, you choose your breakfast time from these three options. Our seating for breakfast was different from dinner. Breakfast featured a menu focused on fish and vegetables, It feels like a gentle, comforting Japanese breakfast. This is a platter for two people. The vegetable ankake was served the way the staff recommended, We poured it over the rice while it was still warm. After breakfast, we stopped by the lounge. We relaxed until it was time to check out. Soaking in the warm bath in the crisp morning air was absolutely amazing! I realized just how nice it is to stay somewhere with a private open-air bath. An electric cart can take you between your room and the front desk. The time we spent in Yufuin at Nihon no Ashitaba was… …a luxurious moment that let us forget the everyday. The total cost for two people was ¥106,960 (approx. $753 USD). When I looked back, they were waving both hands enthusiastically to see us off. Yesterday, we stopped by ‘Takeyabu,’ which the staff recommended for its delicious karaage. The showcase features their famous chicken sashimi, which is raw sliced chicken. Freshly fried, juicy karaage (Japanese fried chicken). Crispy and savory chicken wings, and more. All are hearty portions, perfect for a road trip snack. We gave you a small taste of a beloved local favorite. If you’re curious, be sure to stop by!
