I Tried to Walk 160KM Across MADEIRA 🇵🇹 (Best Experience Ever)

this is Maderia a wild volcanic island in
the middle of the Atlantic carved out by lava covered in clouds and absolutely breathtaking and this this is me i’m the idiot who thought
it was a good idea to try and walk across it over the next seven days I’ll be hiking 160 km
from one side to the other through the misty forests up and over the epic mountains and
through the clouds and the best part is this time I’m not doing it alone this is my friend
Joe he’s a fellow lunatic who said yes to this idea he’s never hiked before so this should be
interesting but hey this is not just because we want to suffer this island is full of surprises
and so if you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to hike across one of the most beautiful islands
on the planet well you’re about to find out let me show you what we’re dealing with we’ll be
starting here on the east Porto Moniz and then going along the coast up into the mountains back
down to the coast back up to the mountains we’ll be snaking our way across the island taking
the scenic route to make the most beautiful   video possible and to highlight the true beauty
of Maderia right let’s get cracking because our alarms are set for 5:00 in the morning because
we don’t want to miss this beautiful sunrise [Music] morning Hello everybody it’s time it’s time we beginning
this epic adventure together so welcome to Porter Benise we arrived here yesterday this is the
beginning point of our hike now usually I would be feeling very anxious and a bit scared about doing
something so drastic but I’m not alone this time which is really helping me feel way more confident
i’m with my friend Joe i’ll introduce you to him properly in a minute now Joe’s never done anything
like this before he’s definitely not a hiker and   he’s never done any type of long hikes he’s done
a couple of walks here and there so he is feeling a lot more nervous than me but I think together
we’ll be strong together we can problem solve joe’s definitely taking charge of the navigation
and I’m taking charge of the motivation joe has a few issues which I might go into later if they
kind of reveal themselves i hope they don’t i hope he just just knocks this out the park but
there could be a few issues with Joe so I’m a bit anxious about him being able to do it but I’m
here for him and he’s here for me and I think we should be able to make it across this beautiful
island together all right here he is ladies and gentlemen good morning how you doing joseph
Perilla joey P joe Pilla yeah one of them how are you feeling in general like are you feeling
motivated are you feeling happy are you feeling   nervous what’s the What’s the situation i’m a
little bit nervous I must admit i’ve done day hikes i’ve done long day hikes but I’ve never
done a multi-day hike and never anything like   this so listen we’ve got quite a challenge
this big granite wall this mountain that is the first obstacle as you can see along the
coast there is a beautiful coastline with little villages dotted along you can see them in
the distance that’s basically where we’re going   tonight we’re going to one of those villages
called Sea yep sea so we got to hike up and down now we could honestly if we just wanted
to go across the island we could just walk   along the coastline there’s a really nice walk
along the coast and it would take about 3 hours but we’re taking you guys on the scenic route
we’re taking you to all the best spots of the   island on our walk across we’re going out
of our way to add extra kilometers and add difficulty to share with you the beautiful parts
of MadiRaa even though that is incredible and it looks amazing we want to sort of take the scenic
route this trip right yeah yeah all right then you ready it’s like me father said when I was a
Ben let’s get cracking with the knacking [Music] day one was always going to be the hardest day but
especially for Joe i did pick up Joe’s backpack when he wasn’t looking to have a feel and it was
heavy it was much heavier than mine bless him and couple that with this grueling climb up and
out of Portmanise ahead of us i knew it was going to be a baptism of fire for the poor lad we’ll
see how Joe does on the first the first tricky stage and struggles with his backpack actually
started straight away joe’s not happy with his backpack situation it does look a bit funny
when it’s on you doesn’t look like it’s it’s   this thing here un try that i feel like this
yeah but if that goes set to Shouldn’t that be up here see now at least it’s a bit more
there’s no weird gap this is a a definition of all the gear and no idea one positive that
came apparent quite quickly was the abundance of water on the trail so at least we didn’t have
to carry 3 or 4 lers with us which of course would have added a lot of weight clean drinkable water
hopefully throughout the entire hike Joe’s still having backpack issues it’s good that he gets this
sorted now the climb up was pretty brutal i’m not going to lie even I struggled massively but the
views leaving the town were amazing so beautiful unbelievable lovely just met our first
hiker lovely chap from Hungary doing the same hike as us but he’s camping so he
has his tent and everything he needs i   just always wonder like what are these
people’s stories are they getting away from something or are they getting into
something for me it’s a bit of both i’m getting away from Bangkok and the traffic and
I’m getting into a bit of a pickle there he is honestly Porto Manise is one of the most
beautiful spots on the island the coastal   pools the coastline in general and just the
overall atmosphere here is totally epic so I was quite sad to leave but yeah the exit up and
out of here had us both blowing and yeah poor Joe started to panic a little bit joe’s struggling
big time he’s got a dodgy ankle he’s got a dodgy backpack as the hike progresses he’ll get stronger
more confident and he’ll start to enjoy himself wow look at this this house right
is beautiful absolutely stunning   and they’ve put a little sofa up for the
hikers oh I need it i can’t get back up yeah joe and I solded on and once
we had got to the top a few hours   later we actually had the pleasure of
walking through a few colorful villages these little villages would appear throughout
our hike and it was one of the many highlights   of our experience passing through these villages
where no typical tourists would ever go you just got to see the locals living their best life
growing crops growing beautiful flowers and dogs constantly barking at us to keep us from
taking any breaks anyway we soon started to head down and into the next valley this would mark the
end of the Porto Manise section and lead us into the hardest part of the day’s hike where we had
to get much higher go much steeper and onto the next section actually leaving Porto Benise was
basically just the warm up for the rest of the   day and so I kept my eye on Joe because I was
actually getting a little bit worried that he might quit on the first day okay so far so good
we’ve gone up and over a few hills already i’m uh I’ve got my fingers and toes crossed for Joe he
uh is going through some emotions already i think I can just tell I can tell in the look on his face
it’s all becoming real but what I want him to know is every day you get stronger if something niggles
at you now it can it can only get stronger over time and I just hope it doesn’t panic because
look at it [Music] yeah hiking across MadiRaa was turning out to be just as incredible just as
beautiful as I’d hoped and eventually Joe caught   me up and we walked into the next town to have a
little bit of a rest and enjoy some of the coastal views just look at these insane landscapes when I
did turn the drone around to film the direction we needed to go me and Joe gasped it looked steep it
looked hard and we had to go all the way up to the top of that mountain through the valley that you
can see in the distance there and then back down   into another town hopefully in time for dinner
it looks steep and it looked difficult but my god look how beautiful it looks yes it was difficult
but with these views it was made so much easier there was going to be a plateau at the top
of this valley the climb up there was brutal   i didn’t film that much but here’s an interesting
segment about what the paths are like when you are going through these little towns almost every
time you have to walk on a main road they’re   like this tarmac on the left and the right for
the wheels of the cars and steps it’s been like this the whole way anyway once we’d made it to
the plateau we decided to have a quick stop for a lunch break we packed sandwiches and snacks
every day fresh from the local supermarkets or little corner shops in the towns and the villages
throughout our hike across MadiRaa every morning   we would go to a supermarket grab some fruit grab
a baguette grab some chocolate and that was pretty much what we had for lunch every single day on
this hike and then after lunch thankfully we’d   gone as high as we possibly could for the day
now it was about enjoying this beautiful forest and then down into town to find our hotel for the
first night’s accommodation but let me share some   of the magical highlights of this section after
all we came all the way up here just to show it to you [Music] i’m glad you’re having fun now
cuz Yeah I was struggling you were struggling a little bit no I I do struggle on the hills
it’s the ankle and the fitness is okay but the ankle just drives so much pain through my body my
whole body like all the way up my right hand side   so it is a not a bleed but it’s close long gone
is the coastal section we’re now actually what feels like a sweaty jungle it’s humid there’s
been a lot of rain last night this morning [Music] joe’s doing really well now he’s
really turned a corner he’s strong powerful man look at this struggling i’m not going to lie
underestimated and I thought I estimated it and I underestimated it hiking is very good at humbling
you even if you think your fit is a fiddle you soon find out that you’re not yeah where’s my
sharper for the backpack this section is uh unbelievably beautiful it’s a very ancient forest
these trees are hundreds thousands if not millions of years old they’re obviously not but stunning so
stunning the mosses the sun the breeze the birds [Music] we’ve uh we’ve come back to civilization there are
tourists there are cows there are more cows and then there are more tourists this is gorgeous
so this is obviously quite a famous place for people to come and take pictures and there’s a
there’s a road a main road not far from there so I think that’s going to be the theme of this
hike is we’re going to be in the middle of it struggling questioning everything and then
we’re going to peek our head over the next town and then or the next hill and then we’re
in the town we’re in a village or we’re back with the tourists which is good that’s what you
want you don’t want to feel like you’re going   into the wilderness for a week and you won’t
see anyone and have no signal this is quite a quite an easy hike in that in that in in that
sense i have to say this is a proper surprise i didn’t expect it to be this beautiful up here on
the plateau [Music] yeah the plateau up here was just stunning and the tourists that come up here
do so because of this beautiful misty forest and these ancient trees that grow up here and with a
nearby car park and a main road it’s well worth a visit if you’re coming to Madiraa it’s truly
breathtaking up here plus after all that hiking up through the forest all afternoon it was a
real relief to have extensive uninterrupted views of the ocean the vast valleys below and the
misty clouds rolling in from the Atlantic [Music] this place is absolute godsend cold clean
water toilet and a bunch of people who are not covered in mud and from here it would
be all downhill through the misty forest once more except this time we had signal
and since my team were playing live on   the radio it gave me an opportunity to make
the descent into Seao much more interesting goalkeeper has saved his team on four
or five occasions already come on you   castle we had to descend over a thousand m
down and it was really tough on the knees the mind and the soles of our feet but with
pit stops like these it wasn’t all that bad go now give me one more big smile for the video and after a full day’s hike up and down and
up and down once again we had finally made our way down into town where we would
be staying this is the incredible Sea a quite remarkable place indeed perched on
the side of these cliffs have you ever seen such a stunning location i know I haven’t
this would happen throughout our hike it would be tough it would be long it would be
grueling but every afternoon we would hike   into a beautiful town just like this hiking
across MadiRaa is quite the experience indeed we’ve showered we’ve checked in and we’re feeling
great we’ve got our laundry hanging out we’ve handwashed our dirty underwear we’re going to
have to be hand washing stuff every night because   uh we’re here for seven days and we don’t have
that many pairs especially you you forgot your bloody underwear i had one he’s got one pair of
underwear for a week so I’ve lent him one of my   pairs and we’re just as you can see we’re just
flying the drone from our little terrace our room comes with a terrace i think it shares with
another room beautiful terrace beautiful hotel but nowhere near as beautiful as this town of Sea now
I’ve just been quickly flying the drone this is drone porn the lava that created MadiRaa flowed
through the valley and created this outcrop and they built a little village on it and the houses
here the restaurants the vibes the waves crashing the sea the ocean the green terraces the rock
pool i mean the distant waterfalls flowing in all down the side of the coast mate it’s one of
the most photogenic spots on the island one of my favorite spots on the island because that’s
actually a good point this is not on the route if you hike across Madiraa you do not come up
well you do not come down here you know we we   went up to the plateau and then we came all
the way down to stay here for two reasons one uh couldn’t find a room anywhere else we didn’t
want to camp and we didn’t want to camp and uh   number two it’s this beautiful so coming down
here we get to share that with you we’re going to have a really delicious local style dinner and
then tomorrow we’ll get ourselves back up onto the plateau and continue this was more of a little
side quest down into sea worth it just about [Music]
[Music] right mhm day one had been long and tough but
it was over and so the next day we were feeling a little bit stiff [Music] but after a coffee
and some brekie there was no time to waste so we made our way back up to the trail head and
began a very long day indeed [Music] day two and we’re back at where we kind of left
off yesterday i’m stiff i’m stiff as new boots calves hips legs hamstrings neck back
arms everything so yesterday that is the way that we went up and all the way down to Sea so
this is where the trail actually goes how was Mr joseph Pilla today all right not as sore as
I expected sore don’t get me wrong but not as sore as I expected your backpack’s feeling a bit
lighter i got It must have been nearly 2 kilos that I got rid of what an amateur but that’s
what it’s about right learning along the way and adapting so he’s lucky he’s got mates who
live here going to come and pick that stuff up   for him we had a nice little steak and egg dinner
on the on the beach yesterday good night’s sleep and we’ve had a nice shower i mean everything
is great this is kind of like a really good   blend this hike of adventure and luxury the
adventure of this and the luxury of steak and eggs in a restaurant and you’re thinking that
we might be able to get a buffet tonight if we get there in time five all you can eat we could
do with that yeah that’s a long way away and we got a long way to go but it’s mainly going
to be like this for at least the first 2 or 3 hours anyway yeah top of the island today top
of the island and top of the Morante so let’s go [Music] i would say day two could be split into
three sections really this first section was 3 or 4 hours hiking on top of the
plateau at around 1,500 m above sea level this section was long but
mostly flat and very beautiful [Music] it’s one [Music] be e beautiful and then later in
section two it involved a few road walks that’s the way to do madiraa a few ups and
downs and sadly for Joe some blister management [Music] [Music] up here there was this stunning section high up
that involved a lot of guesswork we just had to walk across field after field in this open
space and thankfully Joe and his navigation skills helped us cross this 3 km section with
us only getting lost or off track once or twice [Music] and then later section three was the very
long 10 to 15 km decline back down off the plateau towards where we would be staying
if I had to describe day 2’s hike in one word it would have to be long long and
tough mentally as well as physically [Music] on day one we had shocked
our bodies and now we were settling in for the long haul our bodies and minds
needed to get used to these long distances so if we were camping on this hike then this
would be one of the campsites there’s a little barbecue area there there’s a couple of picnic
tables it’s very pretty got lots of shelter under these beautiful trees this would be our reality
but it’s not it’s not got a hotel waiting for us cuz we’re posh snobs [Music] but thankfully for us
MadiRaa continued to cheer us on with every step stunning views and tranquil atmospheres
throughout and plot on we went and after 9 hours or so we soon made our way down the
last few kilometers i’ve lost Joe i don’t know where he is we got separated somehow and I’m
walking backwards down the steepest roads ever it’s probably really beautiful
behind me but I have absolutely   no idea because I’m just trying to
save my knees cuz it’s been a long day [Music]   look who I found we got a bit lost didn’t we
i’ve gone into the future and that delirious but we’ve made it here we’ve made it which is
a hard day what’s it called again sa Vicente that’s it even I’m even I’ve gone beautiful
little chapel on this rock beautiful little bridge beautiful little river incredible
cliffs there’s the sea was good entrance   wasn’t it it was incredible really just I was
in agony the whole time we are now going to check in have a shower have dinner and go
to bed sounds like a plan to me [Music] see this is why you bring the nice camera Joe
you know what I mean right Joe it’s been 2 days feels like 2 years how are you getting
on how you feeling i was doing okay today until the last stint i’m pleased we’re
doing it yesterday I was going through so many occasions in my head thinking
I wouldn’t make it i’d have to give up   i’m glad I pushed through and today now I’m
seeing this place with a bit of new respect and after an exhausting day it was time to pull
into this converted wine celler and enjoy a tipple we then passed out ready to recharge refuel
and refocus because tomorrow was going to be another long one but this time we had
a pleasant change of scenery planned today was going to be a change of scenery but also   an easier day we just needed to
stretch out these cobwebs first day three easy day along the coast [Music]
madiraa’s northern coastline is truly epic i mean just look at it words can’t really
explain it or do it justice so just enjoy these views as we push along on the morning
of day three joe was experienced by now so I let him take the lead and I just picked a
good playlist and enjoyed the morning sun these older tunnels are sometimes still
in use cars and buses used to use them   to get around the island but this one
just gave us an easier route through the mountain which otherwise
would have added a few hours today would be mostly flat 25 km or so
hugging the coastline and views for days [Music] with great weather and even
greater views we really didn’t feel the need to rush so instead we just
had plenty of breaks to breathe it   all in to stay hydrated and to
admire the surfers out to sea i love filming surfers it’s so relaxing here
he goes go on son that’s it that’s it up you go man surfing is cool around lunchtime and
4 hours in we saw a fun little detour ahead of us and after some debate we thought since
the day was kind of easy we would give it a go [Music]   we decided that today it’s not really
that eventful beautiful but a bit too easy so we’ve taken a little bit of a detour
up again quite a steep little hike up to the old road it hugs the cliffs and they this
used to be where cars and buses and people would walk and drive from town to town
but now they have much more sophisticated equipment to build tunnels deeper into
the rock so these are not used anymore and they’re not in repair but you can walk
along them and what a view here’s a height warning if you’re scared of heights close
your eyes for the next 5 seconds cuz this is the view from the old road what a beautiful
way to get to the next town [Music] with shots like this honestly words fail
me just look at MadiRaa around the corner of this mountain pass came into view the
biggest obstacle for today you see this giant pyramid-shaped mountain that’s where
we would need to get up and over to make it to the next town where our hotel would
be [Music] the path zigzagged up and over it was steep it was hot and exposed but my gosh
what a view we had going up and over it [Music] [Music] [Music] let me go [Music] some detour eh Joe well I’m glad we did it in
the end we’re getting stronger i think you’re getting stronger than me too he’s building up
that tendons around his dodgy ankles yeah that was enjoyable it’s been an enjoyable day
mate you’re absolutely smashing this for a   first time hiker he’s not moaning that much
anymore i mo I moaned more yesterday facts [Music]   with day three coming to an end it had
been such a great day and this little town here would be home for the evening
joe thankfully found a really nice hotel   for us this is our digs for the night and so
all we needed to do now was settle in relax have a hot bath have some dinner and rest
up because tomorrow would be the hardest day of the hike by far and the day Joe
had some brewing anxiety about [Music] Today day four is the big day this is the day
that Joe’s been a little bit worried about because um this is the biggest climb of the entire
hike we’re going from practically sea level as you can see behind me to the highest point
of the island so let me just talk you through the morning and then we’ll pick things
up on the actual difficult part for today   so we’re going to check out we’ve had a lovely
breakfast by the way bacon and egg sandwich and we’ve got our lunch and supplies for the climb
we’re going to leave this little town and go through a long tunnel i think it’s one of the
longest tunnels in the island i think it might   be two it might be three kilometers long that will
take us to the next town we could hike up over and into the next town but that just adds an extra
couple of hours and it’s going to be difficult and we have a long summit climb today once we
get through the tunnel we turn right we go down a little bit and then we get on a famous hiking
trail i think it’s called the PR1.1 or maybe it’s called the 1.2 not sure but anyway it goes all the
way up to a place called Pico Ruvio which I think is the highest point on Madiraa joe has booked
us accommodation up there in a little refugeio i think it’s like a little cabin where you can get
food but they also have a couple of beds and we’ve pre-booked that thanks to Joe calling them up but
um the weather out to sea looks glorious so we’re just hoping that this 8h hour 1,800 m climb will
not destroy us break us and that we get to the top in good spirits and able to watch and share with
you some of the most incredible views in Madiraa just want to pop in to say a big thank you to Heer

this summer or beyond and let’s get back to the trail and see if me and Joe can get up this
bloody mountain the man the myth the legend the broken man the broken myth the broken legend the
first time hiker who’s just casually climbing up the highest point in Madiraa it’s hard going
of course it is it’s hard going of course it   is but especially doubling up on the water
jeez but it’s good look at this look at this [Music] this is great [Music] lunch is served how you feeling Joe you doing
it man last 5 minutes been tough before that I was doing all right you’re killing it
what’s for lunch for you anyway crackers   sardines oh you copied me huh oat bars
trail mix whatever I can he is a machine and we still have quite far to go but
we’re going to have a little rest [Music] this is definitely one of the most beautiful
sections after one of the steepest sections   i’m not going to lie i’m drenched in sweat
real big struggle up the stairs quite a few people coming down looking in pain as you can
imagine coming down always worse than going up and that’ll be us tomorrow so yeah just
enjoy a little section with me and the music splendid we we are just going to risk it for a biscuit
going to go up to the top it is in the clouds but then it isn’t in the clouds it keeps
coming in and out so we’ll go up there   we’ll hang tight we can say whilst we’ve hiked
across MadiRaa we’ve come up to the top for you we didn’t need to come up here total detour a
bit of a cop out to not do it wouldn’t it true true but uh we wanted to show you the view
so if we don’t get any views we will come   up here early in the morning but hopefully we
don’t have to do that it’s coming it’s coming i can feel the sun i can feel it i can feel it
coming in the air tonight it’s flirting with us from the seaside to the highest point
for you guys 1860 m we started together we’ll end together oh there’s quite a
few people up here high five ooh la la oh you can see where they had the fires oh
[ __ ] yeah the fire right up here so the fires came right up to the summit well we didn’t
quite get the views we wanted but I won’t complain those burnt out trees are actually the remnants
of a drastic fire that caused a lot of damage up here in central MadiRaa so if you’re watching this
and you do want to come here and hike some of the more famous trails in the center of Madiraa
do your research because sadly many of them are currently closed but thanks to Joe and his
knowledge of the island we were able to navigate around the closures and still find great views
like these to share with you all [Music] hiking across MadiRaa is just one joy after another
and to share it with Joe it was just so special right welcome to the digs for
the night i think Joe’s done a   good job here looks all right looks
all right looks pretty posh to me [Music] yeah this cabin on the summit was amazing hot
showers comfy beds great staff great food and the perfect place to watch Joe’s Manchester United
lose the European Cup final unlucky mate next year too much in the last 11 and 12 minutes the   emphasis is now on Manchester United
to find the way through i should know [Applause] [Applause] [Music] Right let’s get cracking let’s get off
this mountain we cannot recommend this place enough not only did I get a cheeky little
upgrade by the way off camera because there was some guests there they didn’t want to be sharing
a double room anyway great food great staff great location really convenient if you’re doing the
peak um and you want to stay up here anyway Joe day five let’s get off this mountain let’s do
it let’s get back to the coast the valley i’ve   just flown the drone it looks incredible
but when I flip the drone around to look across the island it is just covered in clouds so
there probably isn’t going to be any good views   until we get down still a beautiful beautiful
morning look at those clouds rolling above us it’s magical isn’t it [Music] coming down
the mountain through the rainclouds was pure magic but it was five long hours of downhill on
slippy paths so fast forward to the afternoon i was really flagging this was probably the
most exhausted I felt on the entire hike so much so that I needed to pull over
and ask Joe if we could change plans right I’m going to wait for Joe i need to have a
word with Joe i need to I need to tell him that uh we need to change plan because the current
plan is to go up that valley behind us for seven more hours which would mean it would be pitch
black by the time we get to where we’re going all all because we want to go to a and show you
a nice place it’s like a vada lavvada sorry but we’ve seen loads of them and it’s cold the
thunder is very ominous so I’m just waiting for Joe to come to this bridge and then
I’m going to try and convince him that we   uh we don’t need to do this extra 5 hours we can
just go up that way behind me it’s beautiful but it would just be you know two and a half hours
three hours to get to our place no epic um views but then sometimes you need to just snap out of it
and look at where you are i mean we’re literally   on a bridge look how epic this is everywhere
you go in MadiRaa is epic get your phone joe was getting some epic drone shots for us
well for his video and uh we’ve we’ve changed our mind right so we’re not going to go up there
we’re going to go down there there’s also been   some bad news my booking cuz we’re supposed to be
together every night and he his booking’s fine i got cancelled on so I they just emailed me saying
it’s been cancelled something to do with hygiene   they just said they’re having a hygiene issue
and they’ve canled everyone so that means I now need to uh book or I booked somewhere else this
morning when we were having breakfast but it’s   in a different town so on the way after we’ve got
to gaff I need to keep going and I don’t want to do that in the dark i think they just heard how
smelly you were that was the hygiene issue they were following our Instagram stories and they
went “Oh god can’t carry him look at his dirty   shoes he’s only taken one pair of underwear and
he hand washes them every night i’ve got four now boys and toys eh you often get sites like that so thankfully we found this lavvada it wasn’t
on the map but it was going in the general direction you needed so we gave it a go see
this is what I love about MadiRaa we decided not to go 5 hours detour to show you a beautiful
lavada and instead walked for two more minutes and found our own one that’s not on the map
this isn’t a famous hiking trail this isn’t on Instagram no one’s coming here on a tour well
there is no footprints the markers are not The path is not kept they’re funneling the water to
the next village which is where we’re going it’s beautiful it’s the real raw side of MadiRaa
but this is if you could probably argue one of the highlights of the trip when we stumbled
across our own Lada that’s not even on the map not bad [Music] jesus [Music] definitely don’t do this one at home guys this is
uh stupid oh no this might be the end of the hike um bag off bag off feet wet
oh there’s spiderw webs and everything in here what are we doing oh
my god this is literally Indiana Jones oh there’s spider webs all over the shop oh oh
God they’re on They’re on the back of my neck oh okay good job take the bag off good
job he lost some weight before the hike in situations like that if you’re on your own you
would never do it you would never do it because you get stuck or you get hurt no one’s coming
to rescue you no one knows you’re down here be   careful do not do that one we are not recommending
this particular part of the hike we kind of came down here cuz it looked like a shortcut well your
hostel is over that ridge over that ridge yours just backed up on the plane you got No chance so
let’s walk to your host i’m definitely having a   cold beer after that one i’m sorry but I need
something to calm my nerves and then I’m going to go find my hotel yeah it sounds like a plan
look at this though i mean just just walking through these little towns and just you know when
when when you’re not you know on the edge of death it it’s such a beautiful hike even when you’re on
the edge of death it was stunning i don’t think I caught it on camera right but when I went through
that tiny little nook I disturbed a massive nest of spiders like loads of baby spiders just all
over my neck getting them down my arms oh my god see oh okay sure let’s have a little sip homemade homemade it’s a my cider
nice oh yours and you speak English oh very little and then that’s me
trying to speak Portuguese with the   worst Portuguese and suddenly he speaks
English i’m chatting away out chi-ching sly day we thought we would start our day
with a walk stretch the legs stretch   the legs warm up a little bit but
instead we’ve just got muddy very wet and cold and now we’re regretting this
decision so is this dog it’s got stubble the bad weather gave us time to enjoy some of
the sites here including this distillery that   makes its own local rum last night when I
was having dinner I did try a little bit of the local rum here in Porto de la Cruz
this is where they have the distilleries   this is where they create some of Madiraa’s
best rum and I can tell you it tasted great it’s nice to share with you something other
than us struggling over these mountains but   we are struggling with the weather my nice big
camera here is not weatherproof so I have to be really careful where I film as you can see
I even had time to try the local coffee here three parts coffee to one part rum this will
definitely put hairs on your chest i can tell you that’s how to start the day thankfully the weather cleared enough after
breakfast and so it was a good opportunity to show off the views once more this town just like
almost every other in the island was just gorgeous rugged mountains aggressive rocky coastlines
Madiraa is just so epic and once the worst of the weather subsided we got our walking shoes
on once more we’ve really passed through some beautiful little towns this one up there
he’s up there it’s gorgeous how’s Joseph today good i’m feeling good i think I’m well
into it now yeah look at you yeah 600 m climb oh my dear even in the weather even in the
miserable weather you’re still beautiful this coastline section was beautiful
and very high up over the ocean it was   so much fun to hike up and along and if
you only have time to do one day hike on your visit to Madiraa then this one is the
one you should do i mean just look at it this coastal section’s turned into
something I’ll never forget you see that   that’s the end point that’s where we’ll
be hopefully fingers crossed by the end of tomorrow we could obviously just keep
following this coastline and get there by   this afternoon but we’re going to go up and
over down into another town of Mashiko stay one more night and then follow the coast
go along all the way to the end of these   needles for the final point we’re not trying to
get there as efficiently as we can we’re just trying to get there the scenic route and tell
you what is this a scenic route or what yeah [Music] heat and after another long day we made
it into Machico a small town where   we found our hotel and we celebrated
one more day towards the end goal right the penultimate day is over we’re almost
there we can smell it feels like we’ve we’ve almost done it we’ve definitely done the hard part
and some years and with Snuggles with a stray cat in bed it was the perfect end to the perfect day
whatever it is you had to do to make the team more competitive and look like they were sort of going
to score a goal um but it never happened [Music] day seven final day how is Joseph
today i’m good sleep so well but last day excited i think I was
just up all night thinking about   it being the last day and what it’s
going to feel like to complete it it’s a funny day today it’s like one
minute it’s pissing down then it’s not   weather forecast says it’s 0% chance of rain and
it’s sunny apparently as you can see it’s not we’re going to head into town get a little
bit of breakfast get a coffee or something can I get one chin one one ham and
cheese quasa one baguette this last day day seven it was a breeze with
all of this walking over the past   7 days we were both stronger than ever
well almost there that’s the end point [Music] this final section was stunning and
the perfect place to soak up this epic finale [Music] woo [Music] it seems like my dear has got one last
obstacle for us and it doesn’t look fun right we had made it to the end and of
course we had to pause for a selfie we met this couple almost every day
on our hike but we never filmed   with them but posing with them at the end
just felt right [Music] [Applause] [Music] so yeah that was it [Music] [Music] [Music]   can I hike60 km across an island
absolutely completely mate [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] right it’s over it’s
over we hiked across MadiRaa successfully in one piece although I did just absolutely stack it
in front of everybody but anyway we did make   it across MadiRaa all the way from Porter Cruz
up and down and up and down along the beautiful coast up into the inland up into the mountains
into the clouds down through the rain back along the coast to the very end one side of MadiRaa to
the other 60 kilometers over 200,000 steps and we achieved what we set out to and it feels really
good how are you feeling i’m feeling good i’m   feeling ready for it to end get in my own bed get
in a bath and just relax but I’m feeling proud of myself proud of us and thank you to you for being
the inspiration watching you ahead in the first   few days thinking I can’t let him down i can’t
stop and then watching you behind me thinking I’m beating him i’m beating him but it wasn’t a
competition it’s inspiration and motivation for each other and it’s been a pleasure it has been
nothing short of a pleasure i’ve got to get on one of these in a minute guys well tomorrow we
continue our journey in MadiRaa and the Azors because that’s where I’m heading next but no
Joe I’m really proud that you did it you know   a couple of weeks ago this boat was in hospital
with a dodgy ticker yeah and he overcame that he overcame anxiety overcame fear overcame the fact
he’s never been hiking before overpacked and got grab that stuff just like problem solved his way
through and I was there and you were there for   me i needed help sometimes as well like I I got
tired i got fed up and there were times I wanted to give up but you know that was the day that you
decided to be on it and we pulled each other up   and we pushed each other on and we made it across
and if you do want to see more of Joe he’s got his own YouTube channel obviously linked in the
description you can go see all of his videos about   MadiRaa his adventures around the world and of
course his version of events on this week hike as well so thanks Joe thank you it’s been a pleasure
it has been a pleasure and you guys do it too if you’re thinking about hiking do it it’s worth
it right exactly all you need is a pair of pair of shoes pair of legs and a sense of adventure
yeah right i’ll see you in the Azors next week

Over the next 160KM @TheJoeyP and I will hike across Madeira – starting in the dramatic cliffs of Porto Moniz on the northwest coast, we hiked through lush forests, volcanic ridge lines, and tiny mountain villages all the way to the furthest point in the east.

This wasn’t just a hike — it was one of the most beautiful and challenging experiences of my life.

Along the way, we climbed up to the highest peak on the island — Pico Ruivo — and descended through misty laurel forests and winding levada trails. We passed through Seixal, explored Machico, and followed the rugged coastline with jaw-dropping views around every corner. Each night, we rested in small local hotels, tasted traditional Madeiran dishes, and recharged for the next leg of the journey.

If you’re thinking about hiking in Madeira, or just want to see what it’s like to cross one of the most stunning islands in Europe on foot, this video is for you. Expect epic views, raw moments, sore legs, and memories I’ll never forget. Let’s go.

Thanks again to @TheJoeyP for navigating – planning – and supporting me on this trip – make sure to follow his channel to learn more about the hike – the route – and Madeira in general.

  1. Another Amazing Video…the effort you put into these are almost unmatched by any other YouTubers! We visited Madeira on a cruise so only got to enjoy it for a day but watching this makes us feel like it’s worth a second visit!

  2. Absolutely breathtaking and I am in love with Madeira . I would absolutely love doing that same hike and exploring the surrounding countryside and sea. Thanks for sharing your experience with us.

  3. You know mate I am getting so spoiled by your incredible vlogs my level of expectation is probably entering into a fantasy level. Epic is great but does it cut it anymore? You have raised the bar to superhuman levels. Thanks Paddy! I am awestruck with each new release. We need a new term to express "next level". Perhaps a word that has not been created yet but whatever the word eventually becomes you have defined it. Joe I was rooting for you all along the way and it was a pleasure to add a new mate to the Youtube cast of those to be admired. Welcome and thank you!

  4. Absolutely epic and what an experience. It was a pleasure hiking across the island with you. Next time… 200km hike!

  5. Wow this Adventure is Amazing and the Scenery and Views are Very Beautiful Thank You Paddy & Joe 🙂❤👍Awesome Adventure👍

  6. This was a next level elevation.! Gorgeous scenery, clearly a lot of hard work and effort putt into this, your energy tank must have been full. I'm glad you enjoyed your hike, no matter how the weather I've enjoyed watching, got emotional at time and I loved the scene with the cat at the end. Looking forward to the Azores. Well done Joe nice to see Paddy with a friend .

  7. Hey Paddy, on the first day, did you get a taxi down to Seixal from where you left the route and back up again the next morning? And if so, how much? Thanks!

  8. Bravo! Thank you for taking us on your spectacularly beautiful hike with Joe through Madeira. 🍷 🌊 🏔️ 🌧️ ☀️ 🍻

  9. Well done to both of you. Congratulations, Joe, for conquering allyou fears. Absolutely stunning views. So interesting to watch 😊

  10. Truly inspiring, this one was epic well done indeed. And it really has given me the itch to hike again. Been ill the last few years but finally getting back on my feel. Just got a new motorbike and a trailer for the doggo, and next year planning on some hiking/camping trips to climb a few of the UK mountains. Thanks Paddy, keep up the great vids

  11. Joe's backpack should be illegal to sell. Built just wrong in everyway. 35-40 litre is enough for 2 to 30 days.

  12. Well you said this next episode was going to be epic and you didn’t lie in fact I think you undersold it. It was stunning!!!
Great collaboration with your friend Joe I’m happy you pushed each other through it at your difficult moments what are friends for. Well done to both of you, you are both inspiring me to start up hiking and visit Madeira.
I’ve also just watched your Swiss Alps series that place and your videos are incredible 👏👏👏🩷

  13. It was great to watch 2 of my favourite YouTubers doing this hike together. I love to do day hikes but am too old (and unfit) to do something like this.

  14. Thank you for sharing all your hikes with us . I started following you 2 years ago when I saw your Switzerland video. You're very funny :). Can't say much about yr friend Jo, his videos are not so interesting (a lot ' BUT' mentioned in his videos).

  15. A little disappointing Miss P got left behind here! You NEED to bring her along for your next adventure to Europe!!!! Great video, as always Paddy❤
