Rudkhan Castle: A journey to a castle in the clouds: Climbing a Thousand Steps

What you will see We are in Gilan province in northern Iran. We are now moving towards Rudkhan Castle near the city of Fuman. It is June now and the weather is mild and partly cloudy. We reached the beginning of the Rudkhan Castle route and the rain had increased. We will see many shops on the way. We have to go through an exhausting route that takes about 1 hour We see the souvenir shop of northern Iran and restaurants for tourists to rest. The old name here was also “The Thousand Steps Castle” or “The Hessami Castle”. Rudkhan Castle dates back to the Sassanid era (5th to 7th centuries AD). Pistachio, honey, dates, walnuts and almonds concoction This forest path is particularly popular in spring and autumn due to its dense vegetation and stunning views. The beginning of the road is full of street vendors and souvenir shops on the left and right. Types of sorrel and edible pickles made from fruit Honey, butter and halva The rain is gradually getting more intense The local bread is a little sweet. Selling all kinds of soups and stews (dough stew) The path is hard and the stairs are increasing Barberry, cherry and pomegranate juice Heavy rain We finally reached the castle after about 1 hour and more than 1500 steps. The weather is foggy and the rain is decreasing. Rudkhan Castle is one of the most magnificent and important historical monuments in Iran. It still stands strong as a symbol of defensive and military architecture from the past. The castle dates back to the Sasanian era (5th to 7th centuries AD). Castle area: about 2.6 hectares Altitude above sea level: between 655 and 715 meters Number of towers: 42 watchtowers Length of the castle walls: about 1500 meters The castle consists of two parts, eastern and western. We go to the western part The castle walls are made of stone and brick. In ancient times, the castle was an important military base to counter Mongol attacks. Black tea and coffee Traditional eateries for tourists to relax A type of sweet called a cookie, a souvenir from Gilan 20 cents each Please be diligent in preserving nature.

Rudkhan Castle is located near the town of Fuman, in the lush, mountainous region of Gilan Province, northern Iran. It is nestled in the Hyrcanian forest, a UNESCO World Heritage ecosystem, known for its dense greenery and high biodiversity.
The original structure of Rudkhan Castle is believed to date back to the Sassanid era (224–651 AD).

Built on two mountain peaks at altitudes between 670 and 715 meters (2,200–2,350 ft).

The total area of the castle is about 2.6 hectares (26,000 m²).

To reach the castle, visitors must hike a steep 1,000-step stone staircase through dense forest.

The hike typically takes 45 to 90 minutes, depending on pace and fitness.

Along the way, visitors enjoy a serene journey with streams, lush trees, and native wildlife.

  2. I have been there. But, wherever I go, foreigners are charged a high entrance fee. That is why Iran is closed and cannot develop further. The government give food to foreigners who have come to such a remote place as a token of gratitude. Admission fees should be charged equally.
