ボーヌ、ブルゴーニュワインが有名な美食の街へ1泊2日の旅!マスタード作り体験 / フランス / 藤の花 / ブルゴーニュ料理を食べる!/ チーズ / Beaune, Bourgogne France

Hello, everyone! This is Sayaka from quatre saisons. My husband Matthieu and I are going to Strasbourg in northeastern France. Before going to Strasbourg, we will stay in a town called Beaune(near Dijon, Bourgogne). It is quite cool in Provence today. It is cloudy and the temperature is around 9 degrees Celsius. I didn’t bring enough warm clothes. We’re going to walk to the station now. We’ll have breakfast at a bakery at the station. This pain au chocolat is big. It’s delicious. This croissant is also big. It was 2.2 euros. The pain au chocolat was 2.3 euros. This train makes quite a few stops on the way to our destination. It’s about a 3-hour train ride from Aix-en-Provence to Beaune. Before arriving, we will eat the onigiri and apples I brought from home. As we head north, the weather is gradually getting better. The rapeseed flowers are beautiful. We arrived at Beaune. The three-hour train journey flew by. This train goes to Nancy and Strasbourg after Beaune. (some trains split off along the way to go to their respective destinations.) I want to take a video of the sign with the name Beaune on it. Beaune was warmer than I expected, and I honestly thought I could have worn a short-sleeved shirt (but it was still cold in the shade). It took about a 10-minute walk from the station to the hotel. The hotel had a restaurant. The room we stayed in was in a separate building. And the room we stayed in was on the top floor, with no lift. This was where we hung our coats. The bed. The TV. It was nice that there was a kettle and tea. Next is the bathroom. The sink and toilet, and a bathtub in a slightly interesting location. Since it was on the top floor, I was very happy to be able to see the roof and the sky from the window. The room inside the hotel was beautiful, like an old noble’s house! We arrived to the tourist information centre. Let’s go in! The inside of the tourist information centre looked like an art museum (it seemed to be attached to an art school). The tourist information centre also sold goods related to Beaune but I didn’t look around much. In another room of the tourist information centre, there was an exhibition and video called Maison des Climats. Here, they explain how the climate and land affect the taste of Burgundy wine. Burgundy wine is made in the hills. Beaune is famous for its wine, so we wanted to drink wine with dinner. Now I’m going to explore the town of Beaune! This building looks like a church! This is the old hospital where we booked a visit in the evening. It’s such a beautiful building that it’s hard to believe it used to be a hospital! At around 22:23 in the video, I introduce the place I visited! There was a panda artwork by Julien Marinetti (Panda’s name is apparently ‘Bâ’). The design of the bank’s facade is beautiful, but the arrow part looks like garlic. There are many wine shops! This street is beautiful. I wasn’t sure if we could go to church from this way, but I decided to try this route. This building looks old. Is the building across the wall a restaurant? We can only hear English. We arrived at the church! It’s much bigger than I imagined. This Notre-Dame Church was built in the 12th century and completed in the early 13th century in the Romanesque style. The tapestry depicting the life of the Virgin Mary, created in the 16th century, is famous for being located in the choir stalls of the church. Unfortunately, it was covered with a red cloth when we visited, so we couldn’t see it. The church has many beautiful stained-glass windows, mostly created in the 19th century. There are many large houses here. This house is also beautiful. The building in front looks like a church or a monastery may be? Yeah, it’s possible. It’s beautiful. You can go to the church from there. This is the parish of Beaune, which is the administration building of the church. This corridor is also very beautiful. All the buildings were very beautiful, but it was a pity we couldn’t go inside. We arrived at Rue Carnot, a street with many shops. There was a confectionery shop where we bought sweets when we visited Dijon last year! Dijon is close by, so it’s no wonder there’s the same shop here. People in Beaune might prefer wine over coffee. Even at this time of day, there are people drinking wine. The shop with the cute exterior sells alcohol. There may be more alcohol shops than clothing shops. We found a shop selling sweets that Matthieu would like, so we decided to go in. We tried the gâteau d’épices. It uses more butter than Pain d’Épices (gingerbread), making it soft and easy to eat. The madam says they also sell nonnettes, different biscuit and meringue Are you based in Beaune?
The madam responds that no, they have their head office near Dijon, at Arceau. They also have a shop in Dijon. They opened their shop in Beaune last year. What we just tasted is this Gâteau d’Épices. It’s Pain d’Épices. Gâteau d’Épices was really delicious. The small Gâteau d’Épices can also be found with orange, fig, or gianduja flavor. There is also Nonnette, a speciality of Dijon. We bought orange-flavoured Gâteau d’Épices as souvenirs. There was a retro-style butcher shop. Looks delicious! There were lots of Burgundy escargots! The meat-cutting machine was retro and very cute! There was a cute ice cream shop. We decided to take a short break here. Matthieu ordered a sundae. He chose caramel and pecan ice cream and red fruit ice cream. He chose pecans as a topping. I chose double chocolate ice cream. The interior of this icecream shop was so lovely. What a stylish shop! The ice cream was delicious, and the atmosphere was very nice. I want to go there again! Who is that person? That statue is of Gaspard Monge. That’s why this square is called Monge Square! The bell tower was probably built by monks in the 13th or 14th century on top of an existing foundation. In the late 19th century, it underwent major restoration work and became a natural history collection and wine museum, and since the 1970s, it has been a repository for jewellery and archaeology. The building in front is the city hall of Beaune. What a beautiful building! The building in front is a chapel. It was much larger than I had imagined! I’m sure the stained glass inside is beautiful. The Oratoire Chapel was built between 1708 and 1710 as a place of worship for the adjacent monastery. After the Revolution, the chapel served various religious functions before being closed in 1871. It was then used as a gymnasium, commercial court, and practice hall before becoming an exhibition facility in 1983. The unusual shape of the building was so beautiful that I wanted to go inside, but unfortunately, the chapel was closed. The Saint Nicola Gate at the front was erected in 1770 to replace an earlier gate that had served as a border. In 1844, the old wooden door was replaced with metal railings. This Italian-style theatre opened on 6 December 1862 on the site of a former dance hall. It served as a cinema from 1934 to 1983 and was restored in 1989 to return to its original function as a theatre. We will now head to the entrance of the Burgundy Wine Museum. This building was formerly the old residence of the Dukes of Burgundy, constructed in the 14th century. Let’s take a quick look. What a beautiful building. It’s used to display tools and machinery used in wine production. An admission fee is required to view other exhibits. Unfortunately, we had already booked another museum, so we didn’t have time to visit this one. As of April 2025, the admission fee was 6 euros. Next, we arrived at the Hôtel-Dieu (hospice in Beaune), which we had reserved in advance. We did not need to leave our bags in a locker or anywhere else; we were able to bring them inside the building. Before entering the building, we showed the contents of our bags to the security guard. Then, at the reception desk, we showed the code that had been sent to us when we made the reservation online and entered the building. Let’s go inside! Even this building was closed to the public without paying an entrance fee. (By the way, the admission fee was 12 euros, which included an audio guide.) This Hôtel-Dieu was established in 1443 by Nicolas Rolin, the chancellor of the Duke of Burgundy, and his wife as a hospital for the poor. This room recreates what the hospital rooms looked like at the time. At the back of the room is a chapel. Until 1971, nuns cared for the sick and elderly here. After that the hospital was moved to another location, and now you can tour the museum. The stained glass in the chapel was very beautiful. I was able to see up close the size of the beds and what kinds of things were placed around them. The video showed how they cared for the patients, which was very interesting. This is the kitchen. I was glad to see the pots and dishes they used. This is the medicine room. These containers used for storing medicine were very beautiful ceramic and glass vessels. In a room hidden away, I was able to see various exhibits. In particular, the altar painting of the Last Judgment, created by a Belgian painter between 1443 and 1451, is a must-see. This painting depicts the founder of Hôtel-Dieu and his wife praying before the saints they revered. The wine made from the vineyards, which were acquired through donations, is still used to fund the hospital’s operations, modernization, and heritage preservation. The terrace seats at the bar and bistro are great. The weather was nice, so everyone looked relaxed. We still have some time before our reservation at the restaurant, so we’ll take a short walk. We found wisteria flowers in many places in Beaune. Unfortunately, the cat did not come out from under the car 🐈 This time, we made a reservation at a restaurant about an 8-minute walk from the hotel for dinner. First, we toasted with wine! We ordered white and red wines from the Burgundy region. The white wine was fruity and not too dry, just as we requested, and it was very delicious. The red wine was low in tannins, just as we requested, and it was very easy to drink! These are the wines we drank. The amuse-bouche arrived. This is celery velouté. It was a cold soup made with celery. It was delicious! I could really taste the celery. The other one was a cold quiche Lorraine. It was bite-sized and easy to eat. It was lighter than I expected, which was perfect for an amuse-bouche. I ordered escargot soup as my starter. Matthieu ordered an egg dish called ‘oeufs en meurette.’ The sauce contains red wine. Matthieu loves this dish. Is this pain d’épices? It’s not pain d’épices, but toasted bread. This sauce is delicious. He is looking forward to dipping the bread in the sauce later! The eggs looked delicious, cooked to a perfect soft-boiled consistency. The sauce also contains lardons (bacon). It’s sooooooo good. The sauce was made with red wine, which was very delicious. It’s delicious! I couldn’t really taste the soup on its own, so I tried it with the escargot next. The soup went well with the escargot and was very delicious! The soup contains ravioli and garlic. Matthieu’s main dish was chicken slowly roasted at a low temperature. There were also potatoes on the side. It looks delicious. The sauce contains Époisses, a cheese from Burgundy. Matthieu loves Époisses cheese, so he looked very happy to be able to eat it. The chicken was very tender and delicious. I ordered a classic Burgundy dish, Boeuf Bourguignon. The meat is beef cheek, which is very tender! I enjoyed it with plenty of sauce. It’s so good! Red wine is also used in the sauce for this dish, which is common in Burgundy cuisine! The sauce is made with red wine, and it was so delicious that I wanted to eat it all. There were also carrots and green onions on top and next to the meat. Matthieu also ordered cheese before dessert. The first cheese we tried was a creamy cheese similar to Fromage Frais, with mustard around it. The mustard around it was quite strong for me. The cheese was soft and very delicious! Next, we tried the cheese in the middle. This is a cheese from a Cistercian monastery. Matthieu said that this cheese had a slightly strong flavour and was similar to Morbier cheese. This cheese was so delicious that he said it was delicious twice. It looked hard, but it wasn’t at all and had almost no smell, and it was very delicious! The last cheese was Époisses, a cheese from the Burgundy region. It reminded me of Munster cheese from the Alsace region. It has a strong flavour. Matthieu ordered pain perdu made with pain d’épices (gingerbread) for dessert. It was made with pain d’épices from Mulot & Petitjean, a shop we visited in Dijon. This is vanilla ice cream. Matthieu, who loves both pain d’épices and pain perdu, was very satisfied with his dessert. I had never thought of making pain d’épices into pain perdu,
but it was so delicious that I would like to try making it with some leftover pain d’épices. The dessert I ordered was crème brûlée with anise. It’s good! To be honest, I couldn’t really taste the anise, but it was very delicious. This restaurant also has an excellent selection of wines, and there were people who came mainly to drink wine. All the dishes were truly delicious, and I would love to visit again. Day 2 of our trip to Beaune. We’re heading out for breakfast. We had breakfast on the lowest floor. This is the breakfast we chose. The croissants and baguettes were brought to our table. I had eaten a lot the night before, so I couldn’t eat much for breakfast. The interior of this hotel is very nice, and I thought it would be nice to live here. We went  to Fallot, a mustard shop in Burgundy. Actually, this is not just a shop where you can buy mustard, but also a workshop where you can experience making mustard and learn about it. We had booked the workshop, but we went to the factory by mistake and had to hurry here. First, we listened to an explanation about mustard in this room. (The flowers shown in the video are mustard flowers. They look very similar to rapeseed flowers!) We actually tried making mustard! Apparently, it can be made with just mustard seeds, salt, and vinegar! First, we ground the mustard seeds. Then we mixed them with vinegar. But it seemed like we should have added a little more vinegar. It’s getting closer to the mustard we know. When we tasted it, it was very sour!
We were given containers, so we could take home the mustard we made! The lighting is red and I can’t see anything. At the end, you can try a little snack and taste four different types of mustard. At first We enjoyed the classic Burgundy yellow mustard with pain d’épices. The yellow mustard is indeed spicy.
Next is the pink mustard with cassis from Dijon. It pairs well with duck, goat cheese, and fromage frais. The combination of cassis-infused mustard and parsley-infused ham was truly delicious! The mustard with a maroon-like colour contains Pain d’épice from Mulot et Petit Jean.
(Matthieu had it as dessert the night before.) A salty snack made in small madeleine moulds. This mustard pairs well with pâté, Burgundy cheese Époisses, carrots, and sweet potatoes. The pain d’épices  flavoured mustard didn’t really taste like pain d’épices to me. The green one is tarragon mustard with tarragon vinegar. It goes well with anything, but it’s recommended with chicken. It was quite spicy. It’s interesting. I liked the cassis mustard the most. There were two types of mustard bottles available for trial use at the exit, so I was able to take them home with me. We made mustard and tasted it here. You can also see an exhibition on the upper floor. We received grain mustard and Dijon mustard (regular yellow mustard) as souvenirs. This is a one-hour course by reservation for 12 euros. There is also a course in English, so if you are interested, please give it a try. We really enjoyed it ! There is also a shop on the premises where you can buy mustard and other goods. We went to the épicerie to buy cheese.
We couldn’t forget the cheese we had for dinner the day before from the Cistercian monastery, so we decided to buy some. We were also able to buy two other types of cheese here. I wonder if they source them from this shop. We were able to buy everything we wanted at this shop. I highly recommend there for souvenirs! We went to the bakery recommended by the épicerie earlier. It was around lunchtime, so there were still plenty of sandwiches left, which was great. The other bread and cakes also looked delicious, so I would like to stop by again if I ever have the chance to visit Beaune again. I’m glad I was able to buy a sandwich to eat on the train. We are heading to the hotel to pick up my luggage now. After picking up our luggage at the hotel, we went to the station in Beaune. While waiting for the train, we decided to eat the sandwiches we bought at the bakery. I thought I ordered two cookies, but ended up buying four. Haha. The sandwich I bought had ham and cheese, and the cheese was Gruyère. The sandwich was very delicious, and I’m glad we bought it at that bakery. After that, we took the train to Strasbourg and stayed at Matthieu’s parents’ house for about a week. The train ride from Beaune to Strasbourg took about three hours. We arrived in Strasbourg on time! We’ll be moving on to the house where Matthieu’s family lives next! The video of our visit to Colmar is already available, so please check it out as well. Thank you for watching this video all the way through. See you in the next video!
