Un sabato a Petworth tra arte, shopping e antiquariato | 4K

Do you like antiques? And art? Then don’t miss this video! Today I’m going to take you to Petworth, a charming market town that is famous for its antique shops and also for Petworth House, a grand National Trust stately home that hosts one of the most important private art collections in the United Kingdom. Stay with me for a day entirely dedicated to art and antiques. [Music] A Saturday in Petworth among Art and Antiques [Music] Hi everyone, I’m Laura, welcome back to my YouTube channel dedicated to the wonderful world of the English countryside. As you can see, I’ve arrived in Petworth, this beautiful market town in the county of West Sussex which is located just south of London, right in the heart of the South Downs National Park. Now… what I’m going to do today is not so much to talk about the history of this lovely place, but to answer a question that many of you have asked me in the past few months, that is: what do you do in the English countryside on weekends? The best way for me to answer is to show you how I spend a typical Saturday. Of course, visiting quaint towns and villages is not the only thing I do on weekends but it is certainly one of those I like the most. So… Petworth in particular is one of my favourite places because it is not far from Chawton … it is about 45 minutes by car… but above all it combines two of the things I like the most: antiques and art. Consider that, despite having only about 5,000 residents, Petworth is one of the most important antiques centres in England. A place where you can easily spend a day wandering around markets and independent shops looking for THAT unique item. Here is where I bought several pieces of furniture for my cottage: my small inlaid oak bookcase that goes perfectly with the other furniture I have in my quirky dining room, my antique French bureau that I put inside one of my two inglenook fireplaces … obviously the one that is no longer in use… and also the Edwardian display cabinet that I have in my living room. There are over 30 independent antique shops in Petworth… a lot for such a small town, and then there’s Petworth Antiques Market. The Market is a large exhibition space where different antique dealers display their pieces and here you can really find a bit of everything: not just antique furniture, but also books, silverware and accessories. It’s quite a large shop which I really like because you can wander around freely without people constantly asking you what you’re looking for and it is definitely more affordable than most of the other antique shops here in Petworth. But do you know what I’m going to do now? I’m indeed going to visit the Market… [Music] Did you like Petworth Antiques Market? When I come here I always pop in because there’s something new every time. Now, instead, as I always do, I’ll go browsing the other independent shops too, even though I usually tend not to buy anything because they surely have beautiful items but prices…are no joke! [Music] Oh… after spending the entire morning wandering around independent shops now I’m really starving! In Petworth there are two very popular pubs and also two Indian restaurants. But there are also other places where you can have a light lunch. Now, as I’ve said many times, I do really like classic pub grub, but today I prefer to eat something lighter …just to eat something… because later I really want to enjoy a Cream Tea! Today I’ll be going to Saddlers Cafe a lovely tea room in Petworth where food is really good and the atmosphere is welcoming and cosy… [Music] There you are…now I feel refreshed and I’m ready for the rest of the day. So, when we visit Petworth my husband and I always pop into Petworth House because it’s a beautiful place where, if you want, you can spend a whole day. And then because, having been members of the National Trust for many years, we don’t pay neither entry nor parking. Oh, by the way… if you’re a FAI member, this also applies to you because FAI members have free access to all National Trust’s properties. So… now I’m going to take you with me on a tour of… Petworth House! [Music] The building you see right behind me is Petworth House… It’s truly spectacular, isn’t it? The house dates back to the second half of the 17th century and was built in French Baroque style by Charles Seymour, the sixth Duke of Somerset. As I mentioned before, this wonderful residence is one of 500+ properties owned by the National Trust which is one of the great institutions of the United Kingdom. The National Trust is Europe’s largest conservation charity and has the mission of protecting and caring for English’s historical, architectural and cultural heritage. By the way, if you want to know what the National Trust does, you can take a look at my blog that I wrote a few months ago on this very subject. You can find the link here and in the comments section below. [Music] Petworth House is above all famous for being a true ‘treasure chest’ for art. Hundreds of extraordinary works of art by some of the most famous European painters and sculptors are on display here: from Titian to Van Dyck to Turner. This is something that never ceases to amazes me every time I come here because as soon as you enter, wherever you turn your eyes, you are literally surrounded by art. It’s a bit like being in an amazing museum but inside a private residence. Among the unique pieces you can see here at Petworth House there is also the first globe made in England. It was made at the end of the 1500s by English mathematician Molineux and it is a truly fascinating object. Now… I don’t know if I will be able to show it to you because it is preserved in a glass case, but it is very interesting, because it represents the world as people thought it was at the time of Queen Elizabeth I, complete with tall ships, sea monsters and other exotic animals in the areas of the planet that were still unknown at the time. As you can imagine, this imposing house has also been used as a set for many films, including some episodes of the famous TV show Bridgerton. But… enough chit-chat… let’s go visit it together! [Music] Now I’m in Petworth Park… Look how large it is… more than 700 acres… Wow! This park was created in the mid-1700s by the most famous English landscape architect, Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown, who is the one who, basically developed the concept of English park as we know it today, with large open spaces, hills, woods and extensive areas laid to lawn. In the park there is a beautiful lake and one of the largest herds of fallow deer in the United Kingdom. It is estimated that up to 900 deer live in this park. They are truly beautiful animals and have been painted in several works by famous English romantic painter J.M.W. Turner. As I said before, you can spend an entire day at Petworth House and in this park you can literally get lost considering how large and relaxing it is… [Music] Uh… now I’m a bit tired… It has been a beautiful day but… …quite full on! Before heading back home though, I can’t miss my beloved Cream Tea in an traditional Tea Room that is called… Tiffins! Actually, I’m unsure whether to have a Cream Tea or one of the homemade cakes that are usually delicious in this place. But let’s go and have a look together… [Music] So… my day in Petworth ends here, but I hope I’ve been able to give you an idea of what you can do on a weekend in the English countryside. Did you like Petworth? I love coming here because Petworth is one of those quaint market towns that are so typical of the wonderful counties of South East England places where, honestly, quality of life is truly amazing. In addition, this fantastic combination of art and antiques makes it a truly unique location. Petworth is about an hour and a half from Central London by car, but unfortunately doesn’t have a railway station, so the best option to get here is to take a direct train from London Victoria and alight at Pulborough station in West Sussex. The train journey is about an hour and 15 minutes, so it’s not that long… From there, you can easily get to Petworth by bus from the bus stop directly opposite to the station or by taxi. If you love antiques, art and the wonderful English countryside that Petworth is literally surrounded by, don’t miss a visit to this beautiful market town: I’m sure you won’t be disappointed! So, before saying goodbye, if you liked the video please don’t forget to like it, to share it on your socials and, if you haven’t done so yet …which is really bad, eh… please subscribe to the channel. Thanks and … byeee! Thanks and see you again soon! Subscribe
