Lauterbrunnen → Jungfraujoch mit der Wengernalpbahn | Juni 2025 – Schweiz
[Music] Europe’s majestic backbone.
[Music] For centuries, humanity gazed up at these peaks in awe, dreaming of climbing them. But at the end of the 19th century, a bold idea was born: not just to ascend these unreachable peaks, but to forge a path to them with iron and steel. This is the story of that path. A tale of humanity’s struggle with nature, and of a determination that shattered the boundaries of engineering. From the floor of a deep valley to the glaciers on the roof of the continent, this railway is not just a transport link – it is a journey through time and geography. It all begins in a lush, green glacial valley, filled with the whisper of waterfalls. The first leg of the journey is on a historic 19th-century cogwheel railway. [Music] This technology was developed to defy the steepest slopes. The train claws onto the rails and begins its relentless ascent. The train winds its way up the steep slopes. Far below, the valley, the starting point, gradually transforms into a miniature landscape. Along the route, a mountain village appears, inaccessible to cars – a place where time seems to flow differently.
[Music] The existence and development of this settlement are directly linked to the construction of this railway line. With increasing altitude, the vegetation changes dramatically: Lush forests give way to Alpine meadows and rugged rockscapes, where only the hardiest plants can survive. The ascent ends at a high-alpine junction. This is more than just a transfer station; it is a stage for the Alps. Massive rock and ice formations present themselves in all their glory. Here, the task of the first leg ends, and the stage is set for the second train, which will undertake the truly audacious part of the adventure. If the first train is a panorama train, the second is an epic of engineering. The idea came from a daring industrialist of the 19th century.
[Music] His vision was not to go around the mountain, but to go through it, to reach the summit.
[Music] Construction took 16 years. Thousands of workers blasted and dug their way through this rock in freezing cold, low-oxygen conditions, with dynamite and pickaxes. Most of the journey takes place inside a tunnel, within the massive mountain ranges.
[Music] This claustrophobic corridor suddenly opens a window in the heart of the mountain: a Sea of Ice. Here, passengers have the opportunity to look out from the very inside of the mountain onto a millennia-old ice stream. This stop, once created for removing rock debris, later became one of the most extraordinary viewpoints in the world. And at the end of 16 years of effort: the final destination, the highest railway station in Europe. Stepping out from the dim light of the tunnel into the dazzling white of ice and snow is like stepping into another world. The view from up here is proof of why this project was so significant. The continent’s largest glacier winds its way through the valleys like a river. This is not merely a landscape, but a window into the geological history of our planet. The visionary of the project did not live to see this moment, but his dream opened the gates to this high-alpine world for millions of people who are not mountaineers.
[Music] This railway is not just a structure of steel and wood – it is an unshakeable monument to the majesty of nature, human imagination, and the art of engineering.
[Music] Every journey on these rails is not just an ascent to a summit, but also an ascent to the peaks of human determination.
[Music] [Music] And here: the highest reachable point in Europe. [Music]
