Attempting Japan’s Most Famous Motorcycle Dirt Trail

Good morning, people. It’s seven in the morning
and we are in Anan in Tokushima Prefecture. Today will be our first day
of exploring this island. So it’s time to say goodbye to this
Japanese style room we’ve been staying in. Time to get all of these bags. Get them to the bikes and let’s go. Okay. 7:20 in the morning. Time to get going. Good morning. Oh, it was the other way. Okay. Here we go. Such a cute dog. I’m so, so excited about today. I’m really, really excited about
being here in Shikoku. Shikoku is actually the smallest
island of Japan’s four main islands. We’ve been to Hokkaido. We’ve been in Honshu,
which is the biggest island. We haven’t been in Kyushu, but we’re
planning to visit later on this trip. And, well, Okinawa, it’s another island. It’s a very small island. So it’s not considered
one of the main islands of Japan. Even though Shikoku is an island, it’s actually connected to Honshu,
the main island, by three bridges. And, one of them was actually the world’s
longest suspension bridge until 2022. It’s the one connecting Kobe to Awajima, another island, and then, Shikoku. But we didn’t take any of those bridges. Instead,
we decided to take the ferry here. Oh, it’s a beautiful day. We’ve had amazing weather
these past few days. We might have a little bit of rain
in the next couple of days. Well see how we’ll manage. But, anyways, today. Today is going to be a very fun
day of riding. We’re going to be doing what’s called
the ‘Super Rindo’ in Japanese, which actually translates
into the Super Forest Road. And it’s basically 87.7km of public forest roads in the mountains. Most of it is actually off road trails. So it’s going to be so, so much fun. Many people say this is actually
the longest off road trail in Japan. Lots of bikers
come here to Shikoku just for that trail. We’re here
and of course we’re not going to be missing that. But in terms of our destination today, we’re heading towards the city of Kochi. So, Kochi,
is about 200km away from here. We’re not going to get there today. We’ll probably be
stopping somewhere in the rural area outside of Kochi
and find a place to sleep right there. We saw there is a riders’ house there, and I think we’re going to end up staying
there. We’ll see. It’s going to be so much fun. I’m really excited. Beautiful sunny day, but you can definitely tell
summer is over. It’s definitely a bit chilly
early in the morning. There’s no one on the streets
this early in the morning. This is not like
a very rural area of Shikoku. We’re still in a city. But even like that, you know,
there’s a lot of green everywhere. We’re surrounded
by these very big mountains here. And, I mean, we’ve got green
360 degrees around me. I thought this road here was one way, but apparently it isn’t. Look at how they
wrap the grass they cut here. I don’t think we’re going to be finding
any convenience stores once we enter
the Super Forest Road, so we’re doing a mandatory
stop here for coffee. Somebody’s sleepy. No, I’m okay. Cheers. The best moment of the morning. Definitely. Look at that. What do they have here? This is something
I really like about Japan. They have these small stands right by the road. And, sometimes you find fruits,
sometimes you find vegetables. The other day,
we found some sort of fish. Look, here they have – I’m not sure what this is. They’re all ¥100. I think this is Yuzu, a Japanese citrus. Bamboo? Oh, this is sugarcane. This is not bamboo. Shishito peppers. Cucumbers. How much? ¥100 for these cucumbers? Now, one cucumber is ¥100
at a supermarket. You just put the money somewhere
and you take your stuff. So cool. I would love to find one of those selling
some fruits or something that we can buy
for today, because I don’t think
we’re going to find any restaurants
or anything along the way. Okay. Well, let’s keep going. Look at that. There are other small stands
here. It seems closed, though. Kamikatsu Town. ‘Super Rindo’, six kilometers. Well, there it is. Super Forest Road. This trail, the Super Forest Trail, is actually accessible
from different parts. But we’re going to do it from the beginning. From the starting point. Whoa!
Look at the river. It’s beautiful. Yeah, we’re gonna do it
from the beginning, because, I mean, it is one of the most famous roads
in Japan. We are here, so why not, you know? Let’s just do the whole thing. The full 87.7km, to be exact. This road is quite narrow. Wow, look at this place. It’s beautiful. It should be here. And of course,
there’s lots of people already. Look at that. Everybody needs to get a photo here. Hello. Yeah,
we should definitely get a photo here. How can we park the bikes? This way? Alright, let’s do this! We are officially starting the Forest Road in Shikoku. This is going to be epic. Ooh! So, as you can see, this first part is going to be a paved road. And maybe farther ahead it’s going to be
mostly gravel roads. Oh. I can’t believe this is a two way
road. It’s super narrow. According to Google Maps, it takes about five hours
from the staring point all the way to the finish
line of this forest road. But I mean five hours for 87km? That seems a bit too much. I’m not sure if it’s
because the conditions of the road are going to be really bad or what, but
I guess we’ll just have to find out. Look at that. There’s a bus stop here! There’s a bus stop here, you guys! Yeah, there’s a few houses here,
so I guess it makes sense. It means we’re not yet
in the most remote part of the forest road. Look at that. There’s signs everywhere. Super forest road. This way. So I guess we won’t get lost here. Man, look at the size of those rocks there. This is amazing! Little by little, more and more rocks are on the road. And it looks, more like an abandoned road. Little by little. Japan does not have a lot of off
road trails, so you can imagine how excited we are
of being here today on this trail. Whoa, look at that. There’s that abandoned car here. How the hell did that car make it there? No idea. I mean, look at this. There’s this huge wall here. Oh. The trail starts here. Totally caught me off guard. Looks like it’s off-road from here on out. Nice. My tire is… Wait, that’s it? That was it? Look how high up we are. The views are beautiful. We are here in the middle of nowhere. Look at that. This is the national road here. And we are here. It seems this is where the real fun begins. There is another road down there. A paved road. Oh, it’s wet.
The road’s wet. We haven’t had rain in a few days,
but it’s still wet. Hello. Where are you heading? Where are you heading? I’m just walking up there. Nice exercise. Did you see the tents back there? Right before the turn. That’s actually where we walked from. That’s amazing. We’re actually traveling all over Japan now. That’s amazing! I see you’re into camping. Yes, we’ve got our tent here. With money, you can stay at any hotel, no problem. You seem well packed. It must be heavy. We’ve got a bunch of bags. Watch out for a flat tire. There’s a lot of sharp debris on the road. The tire sidewalls are pretty vulnerable, so be careful. It’s the same with cars. Watch out. Okay. Thank you. Thank you. Ride safe. Watch out for tire punctures. Take care. Bye. Bye. Thank you. Oh, the road is super rocky here. Hello. You don’t want to fall there. Definitely not. Oh, we gotta go check the views from here. Wow! Look at that. Beautiful. When you get older, it’s not always safe to keep riding. Yeah, but you can still ride if you’re careful. You’d definitely get hurt if you fall off, wouldn’t you? If you fall off. These bikes are a bit much for older riders. I heard they close this road sometimes. Yeah, when it snows or if there’s a landslide. Thank you. Riding a bike seems pretty fun. You should give it a try. You can’t ride a bike all year long. It’s hard to ride when the cold weather hits. Only a few months out of the year. Now’s the perfect weather to ride Absolutely. Better make the most of it now. Is it cool if I record your bike? Yeah, go for it. There’s a CRF here. This seems to be a very popular bike. And this one, probably the most popular
bike here in Japan. For off-roading. And another CRF over there. This is quite the popular road. Specially today being a Sunday
and tomorrow being a holiday. A national holiday. Super rocky. Hello. I pictured this road more like
a gravel road, you know. But there are some parts here and there
where they’re actually pretty big rocks. Pretty loose as well. So it’s really slippery. Like here, for instance. Look at that. Oh. Whoa! Super rocky. Oh, look at that. There’s a Torii gate here. There’s must be
some sort of shrine up there. Some sort of shrine. This brings back memories of
when we were riding in Colombia. Oh, it’s getting hot. Temperatures are going up. I can’t believe there’s a car on this
road. Oh, somebody fell here. Oh, yeah. This road is super slippery. He was lucky there’s this barrier here
because otherwise… The fall there is not pretty. That was a big rock. Man, it’s really slippery. A lot of loose rocks. This is so much fun. I wish there were more roads like this around Japan. We would have so much fun. Not that we haven’t had fun,
you know? But, these kind of trails
are really a lot of fun. A few moments later… That really hurt. Oh, I think I hurt my knee with this rock. Oh, shit. I slipped. Thanks for helping. Thank you. Okay. Okay. Thank you. Thank you. Man, I was lucky.
Look at the drop here. Well, damage control. Everything seems okay. Are you okay? Thank you. Oh, I hurt my finger, too. Oh, it’s going to be okay. I think
I’m going to stick to the right side because there’s no barrier whatsoever
here. And the drop is not pretty. Let’s go. Oh, it hurts. My knee hurts. Are you camping here? No, I’m just having a coffee break. No way, we have the same pants! How does that bike handle off-road? I’m always on my feet, never sitting. It’s scary. It’s pretty heavy, isn’t it? We actually tested it out in Hokkaido. Is that so? It was such a fun ride. Really fun. My legs are short, so these trails are a little tricky to ride. He’s having some coffee and lunch
with this view. Look at that. Stunning. What a perfect spot. You found a sweet spot for coffee. Awesome place. – Where are you from?
– I’m from Hiroshima. Really?
We’re basically next door. Yeah. I’ve heard there are tons of trails in Hiroshima. Yes, quite a lot. Not regular trails, but proper off-road ones. Really? I haven’t tried those trails yet. Huge landslide. The guardrail’s down! Check out this view! Stunning! Take a look at this. Well, look at that. Apparently, from here
on, it’s pretty tough. Lots of people fall off their bikes here. Whoa! What was that? Some sort of bird? Whoa. We found a little spot to have lunch right by the road. We brought some sandwiches, and,
what else? Oh! The salad box is open. Oh, my God. Okay, let’s try to pick it up. We managed to save the salad. We brought this salad. A couple of cucumber maki, sandwich, onigiri
and some potato croquette. Wow, man. Wow. Huge landslide. Wow, man! That’s definitely one of the biggest
landslides I’ve seen. Oh, somebody once straight into that ditch. Which way are you headed? You okay? You need help turning it around? I think I’m good. Thank you. This road demands
the best of the best of everyone here. So far, super Forest Road: 1
Ori: 0. Wow. There’s a small cafe here. Look at that. Hello. Nobody has a lot of bags like we do. Oh! We’ve made it to a paved road. This might be the end of the
off-road trail. It’s not the end, though,
of the Super Forest Road. It still keeps going. Well, I think we made it. This is the end of the Super Forest Road. Yes! This was in our Japan bucket
list, and we did it. We can cross it off the list already. Amazing. So much fun. I highly recommend doing this if you’re in Japan. Right here. Riders Inn. Well, this looks very interesting. You won’t believe the place we found here. In the middle of these mountains,
right before arriving to Kochi city. This is called Riders Inn. So, as you can see, there’s a couple of,
I don’t know what you’d call this. Let’s call them rooms. This is ours. You can park
your bikes right in front of your room. And look at this space. There’s nothing in here. So we’re basically,
sleeping on our camping mats, with our sleeping bags and everything. Look at the view here. The river is just there. I love this place, actually. And over here we have a sink, toilet and shower. How cool is this place? Actually, well, they have two options. You can either rent this space as it is. So you have to bring in your mat, sleeping bags, pillow. Whatever you need to sleep. Or they have different rooms
with futons. We went with this space
since we have all of our camping gear with us. The insulation. It’s really simple, but it’s super cool.
I love it. I love this place. Look at this place. It’s so cool. This is a common area
and we’re going to get a beer. Which one do you want? They have – Asahi? I haven’t tried this one. I’ll have this one. I’ll get this one. Cheers. We’ve made ourselves comfortable
in this room. And by that, I mean look at this mess. But we don’t mind. We’re going to bed right now. Thank you guys so much for joining us
on this adventure. I hope you enjoyed the video, and if you did, please give it a big

  1. Could you please add some of your experience with Himalayans? Generally with the bikes, how they hold up, what are intervals, how convenient they are. Is the clutch and gears running smooth :D…. would be nice, as you have a lot km riding them, so also best to know them. Are they 'top-heavy' ? I saw you almost dropped it when turning narrowly through traffic. Best regards.

  2. Encore une route magnifique de ce si beau pays. Merci pour cette belle vidéo. Heureux que vous ne vous êtes pas blessé dans la chute. Continuez à nous faire découvrir de belles choses. Arigatō

  3. woo hoo. I must watch it soon. 🙂 Wow, you seemed more happy and excited than usual. must be the off road riding awaiting you both. Need some hill climbs. 🙂Oh wow, the affection is so nice to see and you holding on to him. Love it. 😍😍That was an akita dog. 🙂 that trail is almost like the TET (trans Euro Trail) and the TAT (trans America trail). You took a bad spill and you kept going. You are tough. Not a cry baby. Glad you did not break anything. As a retired Senior Forest Ranger Firefighter, I am especially enjoying this episode. 😁 getting adverts about every 3 minutes. I think you messed up the setting. Have to keep fighting them to stop. Military Quonset huts. that is so cool. what a good idea. What a great and interesting episode. thank you both. Hope Ori is ok. 🙂 hearing the word BEER, makes me want to vomit. 🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮and I was never a drinker. Disgusting smell. take care U2. 🙂

  4. You need to get crash protection ; 1) Hand guards that are metal to protect clutch and brake levers; Throttlle assembly. Engine / Transmission bars and protecive engine casing covers. Take care and ride safe.

  5. Very nice, but the road looks super dangerous in some places. If I may ask, what tablet are you using for navs? I have tried to see the brand name several times, but I cannot see.

  6. Watched it from start to finish—didn’t want it to end! 😍 You always find the best places to ride.. ride safe guys
    Waiting for next video 🤗

  7. I'm new to your channel but really enjoying the content. Forgive my lengthy question but I value your opinion. I'm 54yo and getting back into riding, haven't ridden for 35 years. What made you decide on the Himalayan? I've been looking at the CF Moto 450. the Honda CRF 300 L rally, and of course the Himalayan. I appreciate any input you guys may have. Again, LOVE your content! Keep up the great work!

  9. I always enjoy watching your YouTube videos. Actually, my home is in Anan City, Tokushima Prefecture, so I was very happy to see the two of you running on the bank near my house. I was surprised when you fell once on the Tsurugiyama Super Forest Road. I'm glad you were safe and didn't get seriously injured. Please continue to travel safely.
