New York City Walking Tour: West Village, New York’s Best Neighborhood | 4K
It’s a beautiful Spring day in the West Village but it feels like Summer. It’s unusually warm today, almost 80 degrees in mid April. The West Village is located in lower Manhattan just west of Greenwich Village. Many, including myself, think the West Village is the best neighborhood in all of New York City. The area used to be considered part of Greenwich Village until the 1960’s. During that time, residents sought to preserve this part of Greenwich Village from redevelopment. That’s why the area doesn’t have many new buildings or hotels. The West Village name emerged at that time because these streets that make up the area have almost all been designated as historic blocks. This has given the neighborhood a unqiue and cohesive feel unlike any other part of New York. The area feels like time has stood still for the last 60 years. Even the sidewalks here are very narrow. There are many beautiful buildings in the neighborhood. The treelined streets create a park like environment that’s very different than other parts of the city. This is Magnolia Bakery, a very popular bakery known for its banana pudding. It was already popular with local residents but became internationally known after it’s appearance on the hit TV show “Sex in the City” A lot of people buy it and just eat it on the street. Carrie Bradshaw, the main character in the TV show, is played by Sarah Jessica Parker who actually lives in the West Village which is the backdrop for the show. This is Bleecker street which has a lot of unique boutique shops and is one of the busiest streets in the West Village. They are taking pictures at this building because it’s where Carrie Bradshaw lived in Sex in the City. There are many great restaurants in the neighborhood. The West Village boasts five Michelin star restaurants and is considered a foodie’s delight with all the great dining options. Edith’s Sandwich Counter is a local favorite, the original branch is located in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. My favorite is the Sephardi Breakfast Wrap and the Chicken Schnitzel Club. What makes the West Village unique is that almost every street the architecture is cohesive. Every block is beautiful. Due to the limited supply of apartments in the area, the West Village is one of the most expensive neighborhoods in the city. Notice there are no new buildings and most buildings are not very tall. This is because historical blocks have many restrictions on construction. We are now on Christopher Street. It is the oldest street in the West Village. The long line here is for L’Industrie Pizzeria. They make great pizza and it’s one of my favorites in the city. They are of course from Brooklyn where they have their original branch. People just order and eat it on the sidewalk. This is Lucille Lortel Theatre is a landmark Off-Broadway theater. It was built in 1926. The sidewalks here are very charming but also very narrow! The building to the left across the street is the apartment building for the hit TV show “Friends”. That’s why everyone is taking a photo here. The restaurant, Little Owl, located on the 1st floor of the building is quite good! The Cherry Lane Theatre is the oldest off-Broadway theater in New York City. It opened in 1923. Breakfast by Salt’s Cure is a very popular breakfast spot, there’s always a line on the weekends. This is the line for John’s of Bleecker Street, a really good place for pizza. They’ve been around for almost 100 years! They don’t have pizza by the slice so you’ll have to find a few friends to share a pie with. Notice the street signs are brown, that’s the color they use for historic blocks. Normal blocks have green color street signs. This is Cornelia Street. A street Taylor Swift sang about on her 2019 album, “Lover”. This is the 19th-century carriage house, Taylor Swift lived in for a brief time in 2016. This is the IFC Center, a movie theater focused on Indie films. This is Joe’s Pizza, a very popular spot as you can see from the crowds. I think tourists like this place more than locals. 😀 This is Carmine Street, a block with a lot of good casual restaurants and cafes. This is Morton Street. Like many streets in the West Village, it’s only a few blocks long but has a lot of beautiful buildings. We are now on Hudson Street, a street with a lot of restaurants, cafes and bars. There are also small shops, grocery stores and places that serve the local community. Salt & Straw is a Ice Cream that’s a local favorite. They have a lot of unique flavors and you can even try it before buying. This is the Stonewall National Monument. It is the site of the Stonewall riots of June 28, 1969. An important part of LGBTQ rights movement and New York’s history. This is the iconic Stonewall Inn, where the riots started. Jeffrey’s Grocery is a popular restaurant especially for brunch. The food is good and affordable. New Yorkers love their dogs and bring them everywhere! 🐶 Thanks for watching, it’s time for me to go get some brunch! 🥞

In today’s walking tour, we’ll stroll through tree-lined streets, past historic brownstones, cozy cafés, hidden gardens, and some of the city’s most iconic spots. The West Village feels like a small European town tucked inside Manhattan, with its winding, irregular streets and timeless character.
Why is it considered the best neighborhood in NYC? It’s the perfect blend of old-world charm, vibrant culture, and a relaxed, neighborhood feel that’s hard to find elsewhere in the city. Whether you’re here for the quaint shops, incredible restaurants, literary history, or just the peaceful vibe away from the skyscrapers — the West Village offers something magical around every corner.
