宮崎県日南市にある鵜戸神宮は、太平洋に面した断崖絶壁の洞窟内に本殿が鎮座するという、全国的にも珍しい「下り宮」として知られる神秘的な神社です。その見どころをいくつかご紹介します。
1. 洞窟に鎮座する本殿
鵜戸神宮の最大の魅力は、なんといっても海に突き出した断崖の中腹にある洞窟内に鮮やかな朱塗りの本殿があることです。参拝するには崖に沿って作られた石段を降りていく必要があり、その神秘的な雰囲気は訪れる人々を魅了します。洞窟内には、日本神話の女神「豊玉姫（トヨタマヒメ）」が出産のために産屋を建てた場所と伝えられており、主祭神は豊玉姫の子である彦波瀲武鸕鷀草葺不合尊（ひこなぎさたけうがやふきあえずのみこと）です。
2. 運玉（うんだま）投げ
本殿前の広場から眼下に広がる海を見下ろすと、「霊石亀石」と呼ばれる亀の形をした岩があります。この亀石の背中にはくぼみがあり、ここで購入できる「運玉」と呼ばれる素焼きの小さな玉を投げ入れ、見事くぼみに入ると願いが叶うと言われています。男性は左手、女性は右手で投げるのが習わしです。意外と難しく、多くの人が挑戦して盛り上がる、鵜戸神宮ならではの体験です。
3. お乳岩と「おちちあめ」
洞窟の天井には、豊玉姫が生まれたばかりの御子を残して海神の宮へ帰る際、成長を願って残したとされる「お乳岩」があります。この岩から滴り落ちる水で作られる「おちちあめ」は、安産や育児にご利益があるとされ、お土産としても人気です。
4. 撫でうさぎ
本殿の近くには、**「撫でうさぎ」**と呼ばれるうさぎの像があります。これを撫でると病気平癒や開運招福にご利益があると言われており、多くの参拝者が撫でていくため、つるつるになっています。
5. 太平洋の絶景と奇岩
鵜戸神宮は、日向灘に面した景勝地にあり、参道や境内からは雄大な太平洋の景色を望むことができます。特に、波の浸食によってできた**「鵜戸千畳敷奇岩」**（別名「鬼の洗濯板」）と呼ばれる独特の地形も近くで見られ、自然の造形美に圧倒されます。

Udo Shrine in Nichinan City, Miyazaki Prefecture, is a mysterious shrine known as a rare “kudari-miya” (descending shrine) in Japan, with its main shrine located inside a cave in a cliff facing the Pacific Ocean. Here are some highlights.
1. The main shrine located in a cave
The greatest attraction of Udo Shrine is the bright vermilion-painted main shrine located inside a cave in the middle of a cliff jutting out into the sea. To worship, you need to go down the stone steps built along the cliff, and the mysterious atmosphere fascinates visitors. The cave is said to be the place where the goddess Toyotamahime of Japanese mythology built a birthing hut for childbirth, and the main deity is Toyotamahime’s son, Hikonagisatakeugayafukiaezu no Mikoto.
2. Throwing Undama (lucky balls)
Looking down at the sea below from the square in front of the main shrine, you will see a turtle-shaped rock called the “Spiritual Turtle Rock.” There is a depression on the back of this rock, into which you can throw small unglazed balls called “lucky balls,” which can be purchased here. It is said that if the ball lands in the depression, your wish will come true. It is customary for men to throw with their left hand and women with their right hand. It is surprisingly difficult, and many people try it and have fun, making it an experience unique to Udo Shrine.
3. Ochiiwa Rock and Ochii Rain
On the ceiling of the cave is the “Ochiiwa Rock,” which is said to have been left by Toyotamahime when she left her newborn child behind and returned to the palace of the sea god, in hopes of his growth. The water that drips from this rock makes Ochii Rain, which is said to bring good luck in safe childbirth and child-rearing, and is a popular souvenir.
4. Stroking Rabbit
Near the main shrine is a rabbit statue called the “Stroking Rabbit.” It is said that stroking it will bring good luck and recovery from illness, and it has become smooth because many worshippers stroke it.
5. Spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean and strange rocks
Udo Shrine is located in a scenic spot facing the Hyuga-Nada Sea, and you can see the magnificent Pacific Ocean from the approach to the shrine and the grounds. In particular, you can see the unique topography called **Udo Senjojiki Strange Rocks** (also known as the Demon’s Washboard), which was formed by erosion by the waves, up close, and you will be overwhelmed by the beauty of the natural formations.
6. History and faith
Udo Shrine has been a place of worship since ancient times, and is said to bring good luck in safe childbirth, child-rearing, matchmaking, fishing, and navigation. There was once a custom of newlyweds riding horses to worship, called “Shanshan Uma,” which gives a sense of the depth of its history.
Access
Public transport: Take the Miyako Bus from JR Miyazaki Station for about 1 hour and 20 minutes, get off at the Udo Jingu bus stop, and walk for 10 minutes.
Car: Take the Miyazaki Expressway to Miyazaki IC and take National Route 220 for about 50 minutes. Free parking is available.
Udo Jingu is a power spot that you should visit at least once, with its mystical location and a wealth of sights colored by mythology.
